There are people in my neighborhood in Kyle Tx that say they have not left their house all weekend because of the threat of Coronavirus. Panic has already set in for people that freak out on every news story on the news or social media.

Can you imagine the panic if they confirmed you could get Aids from a mosquito biting an HIV person and then biting another non infected human?

I read the best preventative was to have a glass of whiskey for breakfast. If it were a big bio-weapon more people would have died globally befofe the news had time to react.

Yeah I don't even pay attention to numbers reported by the Chinese govt, but I do pay attention to their actions. And their actions are very alarming.

Any guesses what these travel, and in some cases, work bans, will do to their economy (and by extension, ours)?

Any guesses how long until severe social unrest starts occurring in the quarantine zones due to lack of food, fuel, medication, etc?

Any guesses how long it will be until other nations' citizens trapped in the quarantine zones start to became a diplomatic sore point for the Chinese govt?

If you think China is risking all of those things because of a severe cold or even a severe but typical flu season, brother I've got a bridge to sell you.

I think the Chinese are reacting aggressively because they have 1.4 billion people, many who are poor who live in unsanitary conditions, a lot of single men with no families, and if the reports are correct - their economy is in an economic slowdown. An outbreak of anything is probably a bad thing. Lots of restless and angry people that the government doesn't want to confront with the world watching.

Headed to a giant expo in Atlanta on Monday. Usually has several Chinese companies and nationals there. I'm wondering if they won't show up. Because if they do, people will likely avoid their booths like the plague. I'll walk right in and try to get some business while everyone else ignores them due to an irrational fear that they might contract Coronavirus.

I'm a 31 y/o healthy male. I'll take my chances if I can score some new business.

Good lord there are some cliff jumpers into conspiracy theories on this site. It is basically a new strand of a flu like virus. Many elderly and people with weak immune systems die of the flu each year not to mention people in China who are poor and in not great living conditions. China is over reacting because they under reacted to a similar virus, SARS several years ago.

The dynamic is hysterical. I am not cliff jumping, just compiling and distributing information. Even if this is a bio weapon, historically bio weapon deployments are fairly ineffective.

That said, there are three kinds of people - nut job paranoids, intelligent information gatherers, who make rational personal decisions and reasonable preparations, and idiots who ignore history and data for the sole reason that most of the time everything has worked out fine in their own limited personal experience.


The funniest thing about the dynamic is that the rational information gatherers seem to be in the minority, and the idiots who ignore history and data always have to brag about their intentional ignorance, and go out of their way to put down the rest.

I had lots of neighbors like that. 2 hurricanes and 3 floods later they still came looking for help every time.

I just got news that the Shanghai office of an American corporation will be closed for two weeks due to concerns about the Coronavirus.

Beijing is now the "Forbidden City" once again. No tourists allowed.

Interesting bifurcation of opinions. I learned my lesson underestimating Harvey.

So essentially they're closing for an extra week? China is, for all intents and purposes, shutdown for Chinese New Year this week already.

Btw, anyone thinking China is quarantining whole regions 'because they underreacted last time' doesn't understand China.

Im going on about the day. There is literally no news or real info out today. Nhi.gov is down, so their papers on infectious disease are inaccessible. Dont know why. Either no one is worried about it outside of the quarantined areas or its an information blackout. I hope some new info comes out tonight.

Not excited about my supposed plans tomorrow.

Whether or not it's a huge crisis only they know, but they don't have the medical system or city infrastructure to deal with it in any other manner , you know because communism tends to fall short in those categories.

Eh. JFK is cootyville. I dont necessarily begrudge anyone sporting a mask there in January. I travel to NY a lot, as recently as this past week, and while I never sport a mask, there are times when crammed in that metal tube of recirculating air with people hacking and coughing that I kind of wish I was.

The West is just begging for an outbreak with crap like this. They won't do anything at all because of "racism" now.

Denying the existence of an outbreak or that it is communicable for 1.5 months then suddenly banning all travel a few days before the biggest travel holiday in the world doesn't qualify as "nipping it in the bud"

I am following this story with interest, although I have changed nothing so far in my personal life. I don't feel at risk. Yet.

However my 80 year old parents are going on a trip to India beginning Feb 28th. They are in reasonably good health and are very seasoned travelers.

I'm not sure whether to be concerned about their travel plans at this point.

Do they have travel insurance? A lot will or will not happen in a month. No one can predict the future.

Myself I am a planner. I am normally risk adverse unless I can mitigate the risk. I do that by planning and learning everything I can to avoid all the bad scenarios. I have a crappy immune system and if I was traveling like your older parents were in a month I wouldn't change anything yet in my plans. I would wait and see. I might be an overreaction, it might not be. No one knows anything yet.
