I read the incubation period of this can be up to 14 days. If that's true, we probably already missed the window to contain this. It's already in Beijing and Hong Kong and outside China. The next 7 days could be eye opening.
yeah, if true, this is a big problem.

They have to be getting close to closing the borders completely. Nothing moves in or out of China for a minimum of 10 days. No planes, ships, trains, hot air balloons, walkers or yak riders. Given how its already in the wild elsewhere I don't know that will stop the spread but it will contain the continued spread from the largest infected population.
If you see a lot of video of people in the streets motionless or of say a crazy pile of bodies in a morgue... I think something along those lines might cause the borders to get closed. A lot of these surrounding countries would sacrifice a huge amount of money missing on the tourism. Nothing short of a really massive leak or China shutting down say Guangzhou (Canton), Shanghai and Tainjin or equivalents would do it.
Well another factor is to consider the difference between something that makes many sick, and kills a few. If it is more flu like in that it doesn't just kill most, then things are not going to be shut down or commerce stop just to arrest its progress. But if it is something that does kill more often than not, then there will be escalating quarantines.
While I agree, I have serious concern based on the rapidity with which China is isolating communities and shutting down LNY activities. Due to the nature of the society we won't know either the morbidity or mortality rates any time soon (hopefully) but these seem like drastic measures which, while not fully out of character for the CCP, also seem to be very extreme and happening very quickly. Those two factors are what give me the most pause and that's why I think seeing overloaded morgues and/or a mass grave, which are what you would expect in a serious deadly pandemic level event or precursor that would lead to borders being closed. I would not be shocked if all of china or at least the states/provinces/whatever sourounding Hubei get upgraded to a 2 or 3 from the State Department tomorrow.

There's footage on social media of people dropping dead in the streets.

The CDC needs to shut down travel to/from all of China now.
What do you mean dropping dead? Be very precise.

Dead bodies in streets is bad, but people walking and then pitching over and collapsing is a million times worse.

Which is it?

Agreed. The odds of those infected and mobile are low. At least i would think so. They didn't appear disheveled, poorly dressed, ill. More like some guy had a heart attack and no one dared touch him for fear of the illness. Granted , China doesn't have a recent history of Good Samaritan behavior, but no action by the public isn't surprising.

If this gets worse it's going to be brutal for countries like Thailand, Cambodia, etc.

This time of year they receive tons of visitors from mainland China. It's going to hit their economies hard if those numbers dramatically fall off. Not to mention the threat will start causing Europeans and Americans to cancel their plans to travel in the region.
Yes, that would be horrible. It could set them back tremendously. Have friends that live in Viet Nam and the commerce and tourism is important. And that bad result on the Asian market will show quickly.

If the city is closed for more than a week, how are people going to eat?

Whenever discussions of the 2nd Amendment come up, remind yourself of this fact:

The 240 million Americans living in the major cities are only 9 meals away from invading your home and killing you for what's in your pantry.

This was posted there this morning.

Quote:

A leading Chinese respiratory expert who was infected by the Wuhan coronavirus while visiting the city last week said inadequate eye protection might have been the cause.
Wang Guangfa, a respiratory specialist from Peking University First Hospital in Beijing, confirmed his infection and subsequent recovery on his personal Weibo account on Wednesday.
He caught the public's attention two weeks ago when he told media that the Wuhan outbreak was "preventable and controllable".
Wang, who returned to the capital before falling ill, said on the Twitter-like platform that he was getting better and his fever had gone after a day.

"I have the energy to browse WeChat [China's most popular messaging app], text messages and the internet. I am touched to see so many people's blessings and encouragement for me."

First death outside of quarantine...near Beijing

https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3047453/china-coronavirus-first-fatality-reported-outside-epicentre

Quote:

The deadly virus spreading in China has claimed its first victim outside Hubei province, with a fatality in Hebei province, near Beijing, authorities there announced on Thursday.
The latest death brings the confirmed toll to 18, with Hubei province being the epicentre of the contagion.
The health commission in Hebei province said in a statement that the victim, aged 80, died on Wednesday and that the cause was not confirmed until Thursday.
Before the diagnosis, the man, a resident of Hebei, had been visiting relatives in Wuhan for more than two months, according to Hebei Daily, the Communist Party mouthpiece in the province.

WHO Not Declaring Virus' Spread a Global Emergency....say what?...18 dead so far!

https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3047455/china-coronavirus-world-health-organisation-not-declaring-virus

Quote:

The World Health Organisation said on Thursday that the deadly Wuhan coronavirus did not constitute an international public health emergency, despite the climbing death toll, which now stands at 18.
"This is an emergency in China," WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said during a press conference in Geneva. "But it has not yet become a global health emergency. It may yet become one."
Ghebreyesus said there was "no evidence" of human-to-human transmission outside China, "but that doesn't mean it won't happen".
The United Nations agency's ruling came on the same day that the Chinese government placed eight cities in central China's Hubei province, including its capital Wuhan, under effective lockdown to stop the virus from spreading, blocking off all outward public transport. Some 650 cases worldwide have been reported so far.

A caution. It might not be entirely unreliable. What has been retroactively learned from the fall of the Soviet Union is things were not quite some stereotype of CNN 24/7 everything is a lie and they were told the sun was shining when it was night. What was lied about was anything with political baggage or pertaining to the party. Something like Chernobyl would be "handled" but a flood taking out a bridge or danger of a dam collapsing would be described or warned accurately. As long as it didn't implicate the party or process, a detail could get out.

So what may happen here is we will get the basic truth of what is happening about all things except HOW it started, if it has an artificial cause. But we will see.

How, unless came from a tourist just back from China? Isn't it more likely to be the "normal" flu, which seems like a pretty severe one going around just now?

Mostly dead bodies in street. One was a video of a person falling to the ground outside what looked to be an office building with the paramedics arriving shortly thereafter (can no longer find that vid).

I agree that 24 hour rule applies, but at the same time, if it were me, I'd shut down travel for at least 24 hours and then reassess. Better to be safe than infected.

Except this part

Local health officials say that the patient traveled from Wuhan, China, where the coronavirus originated.

The health district says the patient is currently in isolation at his home, while the precautionary testing is being done.

If this were real stuff the Chicoms would shut the internet down anywhere near the affected areas. That may be coming, but it hasn't yet.

Lest we forget, the Communist Chinese government remains the greatest mass murderer/killer of its own (or other) people ever. 40-50 million is a good guess just during Mao's time, let alone any inclusion those of us who might include forced abortions/gender-based infanticide during (and since) single child policies, Korean/Vietnamese war contributions etc. later.

Quote:

According to the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF), the demographic shortfall of female babies who have died for gender related issues is in the same range as the 191 million estimated dead accounting for all conflicts in the twentieth century

Oh, 24 hour , or even 48 hour rule, is for political reporting. Not something like a dam is weakening (but a report it was due to terrorism would fit). I agree entirely -- if you even think there is an epidemic risk, you suspend travel or at least take the alert to highest level so everyone is on their toes. Then re-assess. If you are an individual and have the flexibility and not locked in, just cool jets from any going over there for at least a week. We should know by then.
