Well, since that's the ONLY nursing home in the US it's probably silly to worry about any others getting impacted by this.

Full of elderly clumps of cells anyhow, so no big loss...

If less than perfect info is satisfactory to take preemptive measures militarily, I think the same can be said when it comes to taking preemptive measures medically. The medical folks are essentially our intelligence officers for this stuff. If they are pretty unanimously saying we need to take cover, then cover I will take. I understand I'm obviously in the minority, but that's fine by me. But I do find it rather odd that there's not nearly as much pushback over preemptive military measures as there is this.

My opinion

  • 1/10th to 1/3rd of the world's population will contract this over the next year to 18 months.
  • Most of us (>99.9%) will survive and recover although some may have some cell damage
  • The best strategy is to slow the infection rate as much as possible and protect the vulnerable
  • If we can slow the infection rate, it gives us more time to come up with the best strategies, protections and cures
  • If we can't slow it down we will overwhelm the medical community and cause several problems
  • It is urgent that we have sensible plans to slow the spread and deal with the severe cases
  • Yes, panic will be a problem that needs to be avoided
  • Difficult discussions need to happen on travel, mass gatherings, who goes to the hospital, where do the medical supplies go, and building or outfitting more capacity.
  • Also need to discuss how to keep the economy and infrastructure working with sensible mitigation against spreading the virus.
  • Fast tracking medicines and vaccines should be obvious
  • Those who want to politicize this need to be on the frontline and have the most contact with the sick. (/sarcasm for those who don't know me)

This will be painful for those who suffer the worst consequences, but we can pull together and keep this from being an outright disaster. Panic, laziness, obfuscation and in-fighting are bad. Planning, creativity and cooperating are good.

For those familiar with the Laffer curve: This is neither as bad as one group of extremists talk about nor is it as inconsequential as a different group of extremists has it. Reality is in between and we need to deal with that.

I want to make sure I get this right, things seem to be coming under control at ground zero for the outbreak and the adjacent areas. The doomsday scenario never played out, BUT we now have to worry about secondary infections and people getting Covid-19 a second time to know for sure just how bad this will be. Is that correct??

I just went to grocery store.

Plenty of everyone on hand. No panic. Even shook a few friends' hands. And I kissed the pharmacist working there.

Are chances now high I'll get the virus?
Keep repeating that same behavior and yes, chances are high you'll get it. And pass it on to someone else.

But way to be proud of your poor hygiene during a pandemic.

So am I not supposed to go to the store? Or shake friends hands? Or kiss my wife while she's at work?

What about any if my actions leads you to understand the personal hygiene of a stranger?

Yes. Follow the recommendation of the CDC. Don't shake hands, don't kiss. Is it really that hard to stop doing that for 2 months?

So I'm in my 30's but a lot of our office is 60+ and not all, but the majority, have some sort of unhealthyness. Should I let the olds and underlying conditions people stay home?

So don't kiss my wife? Ok.

And I'll go ahead and shake friends' hands. I'll also wash my hands throughout the day. I'll live on the edge.

I think you should make it optional to them. Let them choose for themselves if you have the authority to do so and you believe they can still contribute and get their work done via telecommuting for a bit. It'll buy you a lot of goodwill from your team too

The HIV medication is more of what I was referring to, which does not cost anywhere close to that. Some of it is even generic.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/coronavirus-timothy-cole-rector-dc-christ-church-georgetown-tests-positive/

Quote:

Washington The first person to test positive for coronavirus in Washington, D.C., is the prominent leader of a historic Episcopal church in Georgetown, the church said Sunday.

The Reverend Timothy Cole, rector of Christ Church Georgetown, was diagnosed at the hospital Saturday night and is in stable condition, according to the Reverend Crystal Hardin, the assistant to the rector, who spoke at a press conference outside the church Sunday.

In an email to parishioners obtained by CBS News, Cole confirmed he has tested positive, and said services were suspended "out of an abundance of caution for the most vulnerable among us." All services were canceled Sunday, the first time the church has closed since a fire in the 1800s, Hardin said.

Here's a link to the threaded Twitter article from a couple of days ago

https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1236095180459003909.html

One quote:

Quote:

By this estimate, by about May 8th, all open hospital beds in the US will be filled. (This says nothing, of course, about whether these beds are suitable for isolation of patients with a highly infectious virus.)

If we're wrong by a factor of two regarding the fraction of severe cases, that only changes the timeline of bed saturation by 6 days in either direction. If 20% of cases require hospitalization, we run out of beds by ~May 2nd.

If only 5% of cases require it, we can make it until ~May 14th. 2.5% gets us to May 20th. This, of course, assumes that there is no uptick in demand for beds from *other* (non-COVID19) causes, which seems like a dubious assumption.

Just making an observation.

I was criticized for shaking friends' hands at store earlier today. And my personal hygiene was called into question.

So no idea what that poster now must think about our student athletes.

Come visit me in Silicon Valley. All is not normal here. Things are shutting down. Hospitals are putting up tents.

My church hasn't shut down but has added extra hand sanitizer, is cleaning more, and is discouraging handshakes. That's with 24 cases in the area.

If you are older than 50, we've been told to avoid mass gatherings. I'm older than 50 and have asthma. My husband is older than 50:and has asthma and hypertension.

I never thought of 57 and 58 being considered elderly.

We are trying to put our home on the market next month, and I'm worried about the impact this has on that. I think we will move out just before we put it on the market. I don't want to be in it after lots of people have been looking at it

Oh and we are also told not to fly, and we were going to fly out to where we were moving to find a rental. Not anymore.
