I thought this thing died off in the heat and humidity. You are on a flipping ship for pete's sake. Point it south, drive to equator, turn off the HVAC for a few days and boom you are all good.

But let's park it in a northern climate off the coast of one of the most populous cities in the world and hope for the best.

This here tells you this virus is just a bad flu. Else those cruise chips would be parked at the Marshall Islands indefinitely.

Bill Gates is a more the type of person to want to depopulate the earth. He has said as much.
Has he? What exactly has he said about that?

Has he said: "I want to forcibly depopulate the planet. People will need to be liquidate but that's okay with me"?

Or has he, just like any nerd from the Golden Age of SciFi, read hundreds of books with all manner of predictions about the future of humankind under different technological scenarios, and has come to the same conclusion which is obvious to anyone who looks at technology -- specifically, that we only needed 7 billion people when human labor was superior to automation, but now the amount of system input required to create and maintain another human body on the off chance that 20 years later they'll turn out to be intelligent Producers worth the investment.... has been circling marginal utility for decades and is now zeroing out as we enter the infancy of software-automation. In much the same way families in the pre-1940s USA needed to have 6-10 children in order to be able to divide up all the labor necessary to run the farm/ranch/smithy/lumberyard, and now only already-comfortable parents could afford to spend 23 years feeding and clothing 8 children whom our modern society actively prohibits from working/earning or otherwise sharing a family burden?

And did Gates merely point out - as a nerd looking at the overall trends of economic systems - the indisputable fact that a society with a tighter ratio of active workers to dependent non-participants, will have an economic and creative advantage over societies where parents must spend most of their time and labor choices merely feeding/sheltering a large set of kids?
I was refuting a comment about Bezos, and I dont care about Gates. I never said he said he wanted to forcibly depoulate the earth, but carry on.

If the virus can move through the plumbing does this mean that everyone will get it on board before it's all said and done?
I'm curious how this is possible? Are they saying it moves through sewage plumbing, through the p-traps and finds a new home on the toilet?

Or is it able to travel through the plumbing gas venting plumbing, somehow working its way into other bathrooms before venting to atmosphere?
B.

The ship's problem is it has a closed HVAC system. So as more people get it, exhale it, it goes to the returns and gets passed to the next room over.

That ship is one big old petrie dish. Everyone is going to end up with it if they continue to hold them this way. They need to find a solution to get them off the ship and into isolation / quarantine.

And then scuttle the ship.
Sink the ship in the middle of the ocean with all the passengers, its what the leftists in China would do.

Another 39 people have tested positive for the coronavirus on the Diamond Princess cruise ship quarantined in Japan, with one quarantine officer also infected, bringing the total to 175, the health ministry said on Wednesday.

How bad would it suck being quarantined in your room for weeks? Good god, I'm surprised people haven't started jumping ship and making a swim for the shore. How is the crew dealing cleaning towels and linens? How are people getting fed? What are the passengers doing to pass the time?

There's something like 370 rooms that are 12 X 14!!!

The crew delivers meals 3x a day at their cabin door.

Everybody gets 90 minutes outside a day while wearing protecting clothing and instructed to stay at least 3 feet apart.

They will probably take the ship out of rotation for awhile, slap a new coat of paint on it, and rename it.

On Wednesday morning, Nokia, Vodafone, BT, Deutsche Telekom, HMD, AT&T, Sprint, Cisco, Facebook, Intel, Royole, Sony, Amazon, LG, Vivo, Ericsson, and Nvidia all withdrew from participating at the world's largest wireless industry conference in Barcelona on COVID-19 fears.

By late afternoon, GSMA, an industry group with 750 operators and over 350 companies focused on the wireless industry, canceled the Mobile World Congress (MWC) event slated for Feb. 24 to Feb. 27 in Barcelona on virus concerns.

This is the first time GSMA has canceled the MWC in its 33-year history, which usually sees upwards of 100,000 participants from across the world.
Quote:

"With due regard to the safe and healthy environment in Barcelona and the host country today, the GSMA has canceled MWC Barcelona 2020 because the global concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak, travel concern and other circumstances, make it impossible for the GSMA to hold the event," GSMA said in a statement.

Ballpark figure on cancelling this and Chinese Grand Prix?

$100 Million each? or is it more for MWC due to deal making and product sales that don't get done?

Chinese plumbing does not use p-traps. Hence odors and virus can readily escape the plumbing.

Quote:

Some of the coronavirus testing kits sent to states and to at least 30 other countries have flaws and do not work properly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Wednesday.

The kits were meant to enable states to conduct their own testing and get results faster than they would by shipping samples to the C.D.C. in Atlanta. But the failure of the kits means that states still have to depend on the C.D.C., which will mean several days' delay in getting results.

This thing isn't going to be contained if the test kits are that flawed.

Hold on to your butts...its going to be a bumpy ride.

No one even knows if the tests even work since there are so many false positives and negatives.

I bet those kits are very profitable for the manufacturer. Soon, guidance will be to 'use three tests and report as positive only if 2 of 3 are positive.'

Chinese officials have asked for the virus to stop being refereed to as the Wuhan coronavirus for sensitivity to the community. They have asked for it to be referred to as the Novel Pneumonia Coronavirus, or NPC.

I'm still skeptical of the College Station case because that was the what, 2nd or 3rd case to be tested in the US?

I bet that person was told to self quarantine for a duration anyway.

41 cases confirmed were all severe respiratory illness. Would argue that due to extremely heightened surveillance in both HK and Singapore, they are earlier in the curve and by early January there were hundreds of mild cases for each of these severe cases in China

What's really odd is the stock market is shrugging this off like its no big deal. China's actions suggest otherwise and the economy is definitely going to feel the effects of an extended Chinese shutdown. What gives?
