Well for one...urban growth in places like Houston has been significant and with all the additional concrete there are fewer places for the water to naturally drain. In my neighborhood alone (Oak Forest)...i notice a difference in water collection since 2013 and it has nothing to do with climate change. It has to do with all of the post WWII 900-1,500 SF homes being replaced by 4,000-5,000 McMansions.

The x number of year flood numbers are also based on our understanding or frequency based on relativity. Nate Silver had a really good explanation of this in one of his books, but the gist of it is that there is a relationship between how impactful an event is and how often it occurs. It's how we gauge how often an earthquake of x magnitude will happen in a location even if we have a limited record of seismic activity. We can basically establish probabilities of large events based on frequency of small events.

The problem is these relationships aren't always assumed correctly. They may actually naturally happen more often than we assume because we assumed or modeled the relationship incorrectly. For instance, if we assume that the relationship between frequency and power is best modeled by a logarithmic curve, but we incorrectly estimate the logarithm, the true probability of an event of a specific magnitude happening could be far higher than what we assume and tell people.

That's the thing with the flood models. We don't have 500 years of flood data to go off of. We have a couple hundred are best, and a lot of that lacks detail and consistency. All of those frequencies are based on assumptions that themselves are really just best guesses based on relationships in data collected. People don't understand that because too many are scientifically, mathematically, and statistically illiterate, and far too many of those are journalists and politicians.

Actually I learned a long time ago economics majors can lack shall we say any business sense.

The legit economists understand data and analysis and either follow theories or create new ones.

Being an economics major does not mean someone understands finance or accounting or any sort of tax law. They tend to be high level big picture people and lack any concept of how the real world actually works.

To understand the numbers of the business world you need several finance and basic accounting classes to understand financial reports and the effect actual decisions have on running a business.

Which is why economics at a large number of universities isn't in the business school but school of liberal arts.

You do realize the reason unemployment rate is so low, is because everyone is working 2 jobs.

Can the liberals on this forum find any equivalent Republican that's this BSC and uninformed. Granted there are tons of Rino's and other spineless morons on the right but I can't think of anyone that's in her league, hell, even playing the same damn sport.

Reminds me of how Eddie Bernice Johnson (my congressman at the time) reacted to the closing of the Superconducting Super Collider Laboratory during the first Clinton administration. Many of those with the high paying jobs lived in her district and she had openly campaigned against it. Might be the only time I ever wrote my congressman and she responded with a press release about how she had secured a training facility for DART bus drivers that was going to create "as many as 100 jobs for our community".

2000 $$ - $$$ jobs vs 100 $ jobs and she heralded it as an accomplishment. She's still in Congress, so I don't necessarily think that AOC gets ousted because of any voter backlash. She may get primaried or forced out with a scandal, but to think that the voters in her district will be angry about her efforts to sabotage their economic development may be giving them way too much credit.
