What's crazy to me about this (on top of everything) is that they're wasting so much political capital over Kavenaugh of all people. Don't get me wrong, he's a conservative judge, but he was a Kennedy clerk. All told, the apple isn't going to fall that far from the tree.

Maybe that is the whole point. Maybe it isn't really about Kavanaugh at all. Rather this is all battle space preparation for when the time does come to replace RBG. Sort of like suppressing fire. They have shown what they'll do to even a guy like Kavanaugh.

Maybe the message is "You've seen what we were willing to do to Kavanaugh. What do you think we'll do to you?"

The move to ask the FBI to investigate is, to me, proof the Dems and Ford are working hand-in-hand on this.

They know full well that Kavanaugh will be confirmed when this goes to a vote on the Senate floor. They are trying to delay this past the mid-terms to protect vulnerable Senators from having to vote on his confirmation. They can't attack his qualifications or decisions on the DC Circuit, so they concoct this story and draw it out as long as possible by insisting the FBI investigate the matter, which will likely push the vote until after the mid-terms, thus saving their people from having to vote.

I'm kind of torn. The left would try to spin his answers and make him look insensitive to Ford (and women in general).

On the other hand it would give them a chance to say, "hey we heard his side and we're happy with his answers so we're going to move on."

I think Kavanaugh is way too smart (and not guilty) and would come across just fine. I tend to think they should have the hearing to hear Kavanaugh's side with or without Ford.

The Republican answer to that "message" ought to be the opposite -- "Now that we've seen what you're willing to do to even a guy like Kavanaugh, there's no point to giving you any quarter whatsoever. Let's nominate someone in the Ted Cruz / Rand Paul sector and cram it down your throats."

It is what the really energized higher-class leftists - especially the academics and public policymakers who are shaping the next generation of young folks - are listening to every morning and afternoon on their commute.
