This is designed to put huge amounts on pressure on Susan Collins, period. She's still "on the fence" and as a woman will be under huge pressure to believe a female accuser on face value.

Both parties testifying on Monday will do nothing to clarify anything.

Her: "He did it."

Him: "I did no such thing."

If she can be more sympathetic than him in her testimony there may well be enough public pressure to get a couple of flips, which is all that is necessary.

I did a lot of stupid s*** when I was in HS and college. (Law school was whole other level.) Didn't kill anyone, didn't physically hurt anyone ( okay, okay, I slapped a boyfriend once, but all of the bruises were on my body during that exchange.)

Not making any excuses for anyone but if what you did in HS removes your suitability for a federal judgeship, even SCOTUS, is stupid.............unless.......Dems are rigorously held to the same standard.

Congress and the federal judiciary would be rid of them in one fell swoop.

I have a suspicion that one of the first (if not the first) phone call the Trump administration made when Kennedy announced his retirement was to Susan Collins. At this point, she's protecting her own image -- particularly with the statement about the way that Feinstein/the Democrats timed releasing this information. She's also giving Trump cover to let people do the dirty work on Ford behind the scenes so that additional hearings, if any, will be a non-event or DOA.

Flake is sounding, well, like a flake. Said today he would have voted no this Thursday without the hearing that is now scheduled.

Collins actually stated she had concerns as to why Feinstein held the information for so long. I see that as a positive for Kavanaugh.

I watched the Anita Hill crap. She actually had the advantage of being in the same freakin' building with Thomas during that time.

Weird prof gal cannot even have that setting. She can't even identify the date, nor the location, hell maybe even the year?

I'm with hawg on this. It will still be he said she said with partisans on both sides preselecting who they believe.

What will be interesting in the circus will be which side sinks lower and alienates various voting groups more.

I don't disagree with either of you, nor do I believe Ford will prove to be a credible witness. She's obviously a fragile person, whom I suspect will NOT be prepared for the intense pressure she will be under! Ted Cruz might be the one to cross examine her, given his experience as Solicitor General, but it needs to be one or two only, and not be limited to ten or so minutes.

They are going to paint her as a victim of the big bully GOP. This is such a lose lose and the fact that these hearings are public makes it worse.

There should be no hearings because the timing of this is bull**** and anyone with an ounce of integrity knows that. If there are hearings, they should be behind closed doors because this is going to be a circus.

In this environment, you simply cannot be mean to a woman who is accusing someone of rape. This is going to backfire big time. I do not like this.

Bringing her for questioning is wrong. Her allegations do not merit cross examination because it was 30 years ago and there is NO evidence. Her word is not sufficient. A total waste of time and very wrong. This whole thing is a complete Basterdization of the confirmation process. If her allegations are true, it's a day late and dollar short. No police force in the country would launch an investigation based on unsupported 30 year old memories. But the senators bring this issue to cause chaos and the spineless republicans allow it. It's like a 3 year old temper tantrum and adults caving to the child.

30 year old, uncorroborated, drunken memories are not credible.

She shouldn't be given a platform to play victim to Kavanaugh. The man is a role model citizen.

The sad thing is that this is all about abortion. Nothing more, nothing less. You can do anything if it is for the sacrament of abortion.

And the even sadder thing is nobody is going to overturn Roe v Wade. But a lot of innocent folks like Kavanaugh and his family will be destroyed because of this. Sad.

I can't find it now -- what source said either the letter, or what she said to a reporter, mentioned the 2 guys being "stumbling" drunk? Was it that one that said she waited in the bathroom for a few minutes then heard them go downstairs?

Do stumbling drunks make it both upstairs and downstairs?

Perhaps, but the reason this has been kept under wraps as long as it has is because those behind this didn't want anyone actually investigating.

I remember when I was worried when people said kavanaugh was more center than they wanted. After this character assassination attempt, I'm not so worried anymore. He may not have started out an enemy but they sure made themselves into one now.

You need a sympathetic assassin for her. Gowdy isn't it. If you put her in corners and bully her around, you'll lose the jury (the public). A female with a gentle but assertive examination style or younger man with a mild demeanor (but effective at asking the right questions) would be a better pick. If this was me making the call, I'd have the guy in slacks, jacket, and Hermes-pattern style bowtie.
