Agree that this is the most reasonable takeaway.

Modern medical interventions, vaccines for lethal childhood diseases, agricultural practices ensuring a reliable & healthy food supply, etc, etc, etc. It's all too easy to discount or forget where we were with average lifespans just a very short time ago.

We've really got it quite good IMHO...

Average life expectancy in 1900 was 47 years (32 years for blacks).

Not sure you can correlate a problem between grocery products and overall health and longevity. Perhaps for certain diseases like Type II diabetes, but not for our overall health status.


The low numbers are primarily from infant mortality.
The average age once someone passed 25 was closer to 60.

Maybe not chronic disease, but obesity is definitely worse.

In Europe a lot of people still don't have a full sized fridge in their home. They get ingredients at a corner store for a day or two instead of stocking up groceries that will last a week.

If you look at the McDonalds ingredients in America vs. Europe it is night and day.

Improvement in lifespan is almost entirely a function of reduction in childhood mortality.

The idea that 40 was an old man back then is incorrect. There has been some improvement in lifespan of those that make adulthood, but not that drastic.
