He had ammonium nitrate in his vehicle at the hotel and tannerite at the Mesquite house. This guy had been planning this for a very long time...a year or more.

This could have been worse. Hard to imagine but it truly could have. Guy may have been BSC but he was strategic and logistically minded.
The fact that he had other weapons stockpiled elsewhere tells me that his original plan may NOT have included suicide (by cop) at Mandalay Bay. It is very possible that the smoke detector saved hundreds of lives over the next few weeks. The potential hole in this theory is clearly that the name on the hotel registration would lead to him fairly quickly, but he may well have had plans for hiding incognito.

Sheriff if I recall mentioned the smoke alarm was not a give away. They SWAT started on 28th floor and went up to 32nd, security approached first and was shot in leg.

Sheriff just refuted the smoke alarm theory

Or getting to his plane and doing a low flying run across the border. How he planned to exit the Mandalay once he started shooting remains a mystery to me. (Unless he had a first responder uniform of some sort and thought he could escape during the ensuing melee. Connected to the smoke alarm, maybe??)

The last hotel I stayed at had a hangtag which indicated that you wanted to participate in a program to save water by having housekeeping not change anything out for three days.

Maybe Mandalay Bay has a similar program.
I'm sure it does, it's a Harrah's property. When we were there two weeks ago they gave us $30 hotel credit if didn't have the maid make the room up. And they offer to bring up clean towels 24/7.

I used to travel a lot. Most of my trips were 3-4 days, sometimes 5. I almost always kept the do not disturb sign on the door. In the off chance I ever needed a towel or two, they were not hard to get. Not sure why people act like it's some crazy red flag to stay 3 days somewhere and forego housekeeping. They're just going to make your bed and change towels. But most hotels come with more than enough towels to last 1-2 weeks for an individual.

Yes! To go since the 28th pf Sep. and not have any red flags pop up says a lot abouy his preparation.

The flip side is what type of housekeepers does Mandalay bay hire?

The kind that honors a 'do not disturb' sign
Even with housekeeping, there's no reason for him to unpack any weapons until last night, at most a couple of hours before he started shooting. What housekeeper is going to know or care what's in his bags? He probably had locks on them too just in case.

I mentioned earlier, the same thing.

As a matter of fact... I don't sleep in a made bed when I am at home... why would I want one when I travel.

I really do not believe that... the world is sick. Maybe 100:1 or 50:1...
The mistake is assuming there is no intersection between those two circles in the Venn diagram.
Make food, water, or shelter scarce and watch how quickly "decent and kind" people will shiv you. We are so decadent we don't realize we're only separated from the Katrina Superdome by the thinnest of margins. And from there it's an even smaller step back to one Australopithecene using a stick to bash another's skull.

Decency and kindness are not natural Platonic ideals known to the universe. They are a collective fantasy dreamt up by some clever mammals on one particular rock. We could very easily at any moment wake from our pleasant dream back into the reality of Nature, red of tooth and claw and utterly disinterested in our individual fate.

Mandalay is an MGM property. All Harrah's properties are owned by Caesars Entertainment.

Do you use a new towel every day at home?

lol...most people use towels more than once (at home anyway).

that why they have towel rods otherwise what's the point of hanging them up? i don't think it's a decor thing - who wants to decorate with cotton towels. if people used towels once they would just throw them in the laundry instead of hanging them up. No? I mean if you are clean when you exit the shower and dry off....then the towel is still relatively clean when it dries.

2x per day. 4 towels don't last you a week? At home I use the same towel for at least 3-4 days. I hang it dry and have never had problems.

Pretty wasteful to use a different towel with every shower. Although, I am now wondering if you take bubble baths? Do you use cucumber cream on your face too?
