Praying for the new Pope like everyone. I do think his mission experience will factor into his papacy and frame our outlook moving forward as a church.

I really like the name choice: Leo XIV. Off the top of my head, it reminds me of our last pope with that name and his encyclicals Rerum Nevarum (Rights and Duties of Capital and Labor), Quod Apostolici Muneris (On Socialism), and the dozen or so on the Holy Rosary. All of which are pertinent for today. It's my hope that this is much of his inspiration.

That is generally the case with almost every pope. They appoint a majority of the voting cardinals during their tenure.

There are so many rumors running now about is he going to be Francis 2.0. I am taking a wait and see approach. His Augustinian background gives me optimism.

I agree with Matt Walsh. Thanks for posting that take. Most people are looking at his election purely through secular lens. I'll wait and see.

One important thing to point out, the pope is not infallible in his teachings on faith and morals unless he is writing "Ex Cathedra". This has only been done twice in the past 250 years. Pope Francis teachings on climate change were not "infallible statements".

Indeed you're right, friend. It always bothered me when non-Catholics(or even some Catholics, unfortunately) complained about Pope Francis' comments about immigration or economics and failed to understand that he was simply expressing his own personal opinions, not Catholic teachings.

It's not even just about them being bad people. It's about who they are, what family they were from, why they wanted to be pope and who wanted them to be pope. The history of the church was pretty terrible for awhile. For a period some weren't even actually priests

I believe it was Pope Benedict who said, in speaking about papal elections, that the holy spirit is there to guide us but we have free will not to listen. There are certainly times when the church has not been led by men who were listening to the spirit. It does not mean that God could not and would not work through them in ways we cannot understand.

In the Book of Numbers, God spoke through a talking donkey. If he can do that, he can speak through a bad Pope or a series of bad Popes. The Church has survived.

It is not a requirement that one be a priest to become pope. Any baptized Catholic male can be elected.

The lesson from the corrupt, debaucherous popes is that the Church survived through it all.

Saint Pope John Paul II is the STANDARD in my opinion. He fought against fascism and communism in his life. He made me proud to be RC like Reagan made me proud to be an American. There were no longer gas lines and the direction and revitalization of the Church was underway. I was spoiled with their greatness and humility.

I grew up catholic going to church two or three times a week, having prayer groups at home and all that. Parents took me to Rome and the Vatican twice as a kid/ teen. I went back twice as an adult as I was figuring out life for myself. I will admit that my posts here were a little trollish but I did mean what I said. I have a lot of issues with the Catholic Church and don't consider myself catholic anymore but I also don't have a problem with individuals being catholic themselves. Have a good day
