No where in Ephesians 1 is man's own freewill mentioned.
You would definitely have to read that into the text to get that interpretation l.

{Again, the problem you have is that to make the narrow argument, you are saying it's only the Ephesians at that moment who were chosen. Or you have to take a broader stance that everybody who hears the letter is chosen, which always expands it to the point where you would essentially be arguing that everybody who simply heard this letter was chosen.}

No, brother. I'm stating that everyone who is born as sons of God are his saints, which to whom the letter was addressed. They are the saints who believe because they were chosen in love before the foundations of the world as Paul qualified his address to the saints immediately in both the following verse and in the following context.
The text is for both Jews and Gentile saints. And is broader than your oversimplification.

In what sense are both Jew and Gentile predestined?
Further Clarified again in verse 11.

{11) In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,}

All things…Christ didn't just provide a way. He is the way, the truth, and the life.
"…according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will" for those who would not be granted faith? All things. Yes. "…who works all things according to the counsel of his will."

This letter first to Ephesus in Turkey is by no means merely narrowed to address the Jew and Gentile divide. It is much broader than that. Not even mentioned in chapter one's sentence structure. For it is completely false that you would even mention as to suggest that my premise is that only those who read Ephesians 1 are predestined and chosen before the foundations of the world.

St. Paul is most definitely going beyond the Gentile and Jew divide here:

{8) which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight 9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.}

Making what mystery known to us of his will?
To unite all things "in him."Paul is specifically talking to all saints who have been predestined in him before the foundations of the world, in love.

And we see "according to his purpose" which Paul qualifies with "which he set forth in Christ." Who is in Christ? Those who would believe because they have been chosen before the foundations of the world in love.

In what way does he "unite all things in him?"

The following verses describe it vividly.

{11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,}

"In him" is correctly ordered first in verse 13.
"When you heard the word of truth" Have to be in him before the foundations of the world namely by being predestined first.

For you have to be in him in order to hear properly and believe in him. And then notice the comma correctly placed in verse 13 to qualify what "in him" connects towards.
That is to say that "In him" you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit as a guarantee that you were chosen in him before the foundations of the world who works all things according to the counsel of his will. Why?
"…so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory."
That is to say that hope in Paul's usage of the word is not a wish as commonly used. Hope is an anchor to the set boundaries or mark of distinction, also called predestination.

"The first to hope"

That is, the Jewish Christians were the first to hope.
But Paul qualifies this statement, which the reader should pay attention here to that this predestined plan of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will; qualifies by stating:

"so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also,"

And the fullness of our inheritance amongthe predestined is an inheritance which will be completely received one day when we have full possession of it in our glorified bodies.

Again, how does this all fit meticulously together in one sentence in the Greek?

"(5) he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,"

How have we been predestined by being adopted as sons? Qualified by …according to the purpose of his will."

From Agliving:

{Further, we of course know that through Jesus Christ, the gentiles, who were once "excluded" are now included in his chosen people}

Old news and completely disregards the very definition of being predestined. He goes over some of that in Ephesians 2. But not before St. Paul mentions that these Gentiles (you) walked according to flesh and the world were dead in their sins and how it is God alone who made them alive or saved. Dead men can't muster belief. Faith is a gift and we see that in Ephesians 2:8-9.

That and the Gospel being spread to the Gentiles was already a known fact in Ephesus. For the Apostle Paul had spent 3 years there in his third missionary journey mentioned in the book of Acts around 53AD. The Apostle Paul states that he was imprisoned in chapter 3. This dates the letter to be around 60-62AD. That's almost ten years with Gentile Timothy in charge.

{So what we are left with is saying that the chosen people are those who hear the Word of God (everyone) and do not resist (less than everyone).}

No, brother. Not everyone is "in him" before the foundations of the world according to the one who works all things according to the counsel of his will. Now do you see?
Those who are in him because they were chosen in him before they were naturally born are now adopted sons of God. Otherwise, you will have to be an universalist like Dermdoc's current belief.

{But to make the claim that Paul is saying God is actively excluding people in the beginning of this letter doesn't hold}

He excludes them by only addressing the letter to the saints. Otherwise, all are predestined before the foundations of the world in him who works all things according to the counsel of his will.

Brother, please stop being insecure about God.

Your shotgun blasting across any and all R&P threads is getting old since you joined back in July…Show some respect for the thread titles…This was meant as a simple well wishing to everyone for Christmas Day …It instead devolved into your usual "I'm right you're wrong" lectures…This has gotten old quick……
I really appreciate the "I'm right you're wrong" declaration here. Thank you 88Warrior.

It's very difficult to let someone sit in their own theology, especially on a forum such as this built for the purpose of expressing our opinions. I try to remember that not everything is waiting for my opinion. I can happily let someone's experience inform them without having to insist they have an understanding of my own opinion.

With that, I would ask that should I behave in a way that is not building you up, then let me know.

Peace my fellow God-loved people and Merry Christmas.

No doubt this is a place for debates and opinions. I enjoy reading and occasionally putting my two cents in..but just not on EVERY single thread…some threads are started as a respite from the day to day arguments that tend to drag us all down…Merry Christmas Chaplain!
Another amen.

New Year's resolution will be not to always having to be right.

God bless and shalom.

I'm laughing, brother. You will continue being a cage stage anticalvinist no matter what and then claim that you're right and I'm wrong and state that something like, "you're right, we shouldn't always have to be right."

Actually, this is the same heretical dualism of not discussing faith or religion.

I'm patient with you, but I believe in a God with a spine.

1 Corinthians 13:8

"Love does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth"

This is exactly why I share. I believe will-worship is unrighteousness and states so in God's sufficient word for us to understand the full meaning of the text.

I am rejoicing in the truth and no one is going to despise me for my age or experience (Paul told Timothy exactly that).

You stated that you will make a deal with me. That if I be silent about the full counsel of God that you will not respond.
I know the human philosophical underpinnings of why you aren't called out, but I am falsely.

All I can say is this a my favorite Christmas season and I will not be silent. This is why our savior was born into the world.

Words of our Lord in John 6:44 (ESV)

"44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day."

This is love for the saints to understand the office and role of our Lord indiscriminately inviting whosoever.

But it is the office of the Father to draw by the Holy Spirit the ones to be able to see, hear, and be raised from being spiritually dead.

This is how God so loved the world. The human race will not perish completely from extinction in the new heavens and new earth.

And this connects to Ephesians 1 and 2.

Ephesians 3:18-19 (ESV)

{18 may have strength to comprehend with all the SAINTS what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all in the fullness of God.}

The other view that is neither the Reformed nor the universalist view of brother Dermdoc is a love that fails.

For how is God's love unconditional if it is based upon a previous condition of God seeing something better about you by a sheer intellectual foreknowledge of future choices in order to set his love upon you?

"I love you, honey, because you are so beautiful and only speak of how she keeps her physique for you."

The universalist love that Dermdoc currently unrepentantly holds to is a love as if God married his bride (the saints) and then writes love letters and has random affairs with others.

But not affairs that last in a bond of matrimony. Not a love that is unconditionally dedicated beforehand to his bride.
A conditional love which presents God's atoning work via Christ's death, burial, and resurrection as a love not powerful enough to cause the adulterers to be forgiven but must suffer for awhile in the afterlife until they are purified (atoned) for what they have done other than that of the cross.

What love is that? This universal omnipresent love that thinks God being just is unfair. Or that favor is fair. Or that mercy in God's courtroom is to be omnipresent over his justice being omnipresent. This turns God's true love into the distorted reflection of human paternal relationships. And other unreformed views of God's love do this as well in their own ways. We are created in the image of God albeit defaced but not erased. However, God is not created in our image. We don't make God into the image of man and believe that God is married out of need to his creation outside of his eternal love bond as Triune and sufficient.

In Psalm 136 the text repeats "his love endures forever" is both in contrast to and in harmony with "him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt" (verse 10) , also "to him who struck down great kings" (in verse 17).
"his love endures forever."

Then you have the wheat and the tares, the good fish and the bad fish, the sheep and the goats, wise and foolish virgins in contrast representing God's justice and God's mercy.

A decision which cannot be reversed in Matthew 13:40.

2 Thessalonians 1:6-10 (ESV)

{6 since indeed God considers it just to repay with affliction those who afflict you, 7 and to grant relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels 8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from[a] the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might, 10 when he comes on that day to be glorified in his saints, and to be marveled at among all who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed.}

Why does God still find fault? Well…I'm waiting for you in the Gospel is for the elect every nation, tribe, and tongue.

And I've noticed that the unreformed rarely ever if ever use the term elect. Hahah. The term is very Biblical.

"God chooses people who choose him. God only saves those who can save themselves." That's a foundation of works based salvation. No wonder eternal security is the only thing some people talk about .

It's okay to be secure about God.

To completely derail, I read the other day that Harvard's lawyers are arguing that what she did was not actual plagiarism. It appears that it clearly was, as plagiarism is currently loosely defined in the Academy. However, one minor benefit of this whole fiasco is that plagiarism may be more closely examined and tightly defined.

It is my impression that today's loose definition of plagiarism is using anything more than 4-5 words in a row without putting them in quotes, even if you credit and cite your source. IMHO, that is a ridiculous standard. The point of plagiarism is to prevent people from taking other's ideas and passing them off as their own. It is a form of intellectual property protection. So long as one is not copying and pasting wholesale, and always citing sources, where is the harm?

And that's where I am at. Plus, I like to show forth a more equipped community than merely me.
I'll try to start rewording sources more and add the links as I always do. If that's the game, then I'll play.

Im not so certain that scientific research is the same as research in the humanities.
And you can't plagiarize the Bible. It cannot be done. Fair game.

Merry Christmas.
What's funny is all of the secularist started using the return of Xmas over Christmas around ten years ago, then they stopped because we reminded them that the early church used the X, which is the Greek letter for C or K, to say that they where of Christ. I've noticed that the secularists have stopped using Xmas because we own that word as well.

Merry Xmas.

Here is part of a Christmas sermon by St. Augustine.

"Man's Maker was made man,
that He, Ruler of the stars,
might nurse at His mother's breasts;
that the Bread might be hungry,
the Fountain thirst,
the Light sleep,
the Way be tired from the journey;
that the Truth might be accused by false witnesses,
the Judge of the living and the dead be judged by a mortal judge,
Justice be sentenced by the unjust,
the Teacher be beaten with whips,
the Vine be crowned with thorns,
the Foundation be suspended on wood;
that Strength might be made weak,
that He who makes well might be wounded,
that Life might die.

He was made man to suffer these and similar undeserved things for us, that He might free us who were undeserving; and He who on account of us endured such great evils, merited no evil, while we who through Him were so bountifully blessed, had no merits to show for such blessings. Therefore, because of all this, He who before all ages and without a beginning determined by days was the Son of God, saw fit in these latter days to be the Son of man; and He, who was born of the Father but not made by the Father, was made in the mother whom He had made, that He might sometime be born here on earth of her who could never have been anywhere except through Him. (Sermon 191). "
