Yeah that's not really how a textual tradition works. The interpretation of it can't be separated from the text itself. But that's fine, I wasn't really trying to engage but add perspective as to what the bow actually represents.

It's kinda funny that you say you never understood the story, I'm telling you what it means, and now you've got it all in hand.

So since this is supposed to he "Shame Month," I'm curious what all should be done to insure the LGBT community knows it and feels the appropriate level of shaming.

Pride parades must include 20% more leather and whippings.

You should know that God loves you and desires you to be happy not just in a fleeting moment on Earth but all eternity. He loves you so much he sent his only son to die upon a cross for you, and all souls of men who are all fallen. We are to respond to this love in kind, with love, and the scriptures teach to love God is to follow his commandments. That will set you free and bring you true happiness. There is no shame ,only the knowledge God's love is yours to freely accept or reject.

I guess thanks for the sentiment, but no thanks. Replace this with a similar pitch from any other religion and you'd rightfully roll your eyes at it. Glad you're not down with the shaming though.

This is a different argument though. We wouldn't "rightfully" roll our eyes on it. We'd just disagree because we believe in our pitch. The existence of a "wrong" pitch doesn't mean any other one is wrong though. Its always been a given than atheists disbelieve in 1 more god than we do.

I meant "rightfully" in that I would agree he would be right right to roll his eyes at it. I fully admit I have no idea what gods do or don't exist or what they want from any of us, so I have no idea which one of us would be objectively "right."

This old fart just wafted into town on the proud gay breeze of hundreds of pay-raids.
By Gawd, pride is everthang, and don't ya'll forget it!
We need to create a Proud Texan Gay Brag!
...Or maybe not.
How about a Proud Texan Christian Brag!
...Well, possibly not.
Oh, I know, a Proud Texan Waltz!
That's more like it. How about...
"Open borders, open borders,
So like virginity -
Once its gone, it's gone forever,
Sweet, sweet, sweet virginity."

waltz across Texas with you

Sorry, I spent yesterday on the happy pride month thread. Last time I checked the happy shame month thread was just some good ole fashion dunking on white jesus. Which, I'm happy to oblige in and is inexcusable. Especially when that painting looks like Jesus just threw four touchdowns.

There's no problem with White Jesus, or Black Jesus, or Asian Jesus, or Hispanic Jesus. Throughout the history of our church our Lord and our Lady have often been depicted with characteristics similar to those of the culture making the art.

I can agree to an extent, but non historically accurate depictions have turned into political football where Jesus was 'one of us.'

Jesus was apparently a slightly taller, slightly more pale middle eastern Jew. But that doesn't sell nativity scenes quiet as well as the build-a-jesus model does.

I think that that is the point. Jesus is "one of us" as much as he is God. He is human and I truly enjoy statues and art from around the world where they have accepted Christ to the point where he is depicted as one of the indigenous peoples instead of a foreigner. It's a beautiful expression of the incarnation. I am including a few photos from a Vietnamese retreat center I had the opportunity to stay at earlier this year.

Id argue this (not having pictures Muhammad) is something Muslims have right.

The problem with portraying Jesus as "one of us" is that it also portrays him as " not one of them"

So they're not human? That is the point of the incarnation is that God reconciled himself to us to the point of becoming one of us, humans.

This is something that the mohammedans reject, so they are placing themselves outside of this reality.

My point is that It is easier to believe god is in your side in a political or military combat when you portray Jesus as looking like you vs having Jesus look like your adversary.

Kind of hard to be a member of the klan if your Jesus is distinctly Jewish in appearance

Ah...........

I get it now White Jesus in art has caused so many wars, crusades and what not. If only they used a little more color.

This might surprise you, but most Christians do not give a crap at all what he looks/looked like. So why the childish mocking of a "white Jesus". It's so silly to a believer.

You know what, he probably smelled like someone without deodorant 2000 years ago too. There's another reason you can dunk on Christians.

I think the fact that Muhammad is not a savior figure in Sunni versions of Islam is also part of it, so there's less of an urge to have devotional imagery. On the other hand Shi'i Islam which does have explicit messiah figures in the form of the Imams - specifically Ali, Hussain, and the Mahdi, does have a history of devotional imagery.

This imagery is also cultural. From Turkic times, the imagery of Ali depicts him with slightly Asian features - eyes, hair, dress. From Persian times, he's depicted as a fair skinned Middle Easterner.

I don't know how you can look at the last couple decades and think that people won't completely flip their lids if you rolled out more accurate depictions of Christ.

They will absolutely give a crap.

*Yawn* I don't think everyone is racist nor do I think that Christians have any disadvantage to the overall population in this regard. The point of my post was that I don't think Christians have any advantage there either.

I wonder if I had started a thread for the purpose of insulting June as a month of devotion to the sacred heart. . . . How many Christians here would have called it out as classless, hateful, or otherwise uncalled for? I would be interested in comparing that number to the number of Christians that called out this thread.

Poor gay dudes, only have every commercial, educational, and institutional organization kowtowing to them for a month. Apparently they need the R&P board on Texags as well.
