College Student Gets Death Threats for Smuggling ‘Body of Christ’
Tuesday, July 08, 2008

A student at the University of Central Florida claims his life — and afterlife — were threatened by enraged Catholics after he pocketed "the body of Christ" during a church ceremony, according to a report on myfoxorlando.com.

Webster Cook says he received death threats and eternal damnation after he removed a wafer of bread from his mouth during communion and smuggled it from the church in a Ziploc bag.

Though Cook returned the wafer one week after the theft, outraged Catholics were unforgiving, according to WFTV.com.

“We don’t know 100 percent what Mr. Cook's motivation was,” Susan Fani, a spokeswoman with the local Catholic diocese, told myfoxorlando.com. “However, if anything were to qualify as a hate crime, to us this seems like this might be it.”

The UCF student leader said he stole the communion bread, known by Catholics as the Eucharist and believed to be the body of Christ, to show to his non-Catholic friend.

A hate crime?...YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME...

He took it out of his mouth and sneaked it out of the church building, but luckily he returned it, so it can be reused.

'cuse sometimes a picture on the internet just won't do? This story seems pretty ridiculous from EVERY angle.

Just out of curiosity, what does a church do with an unused Eucharist wafer? I mean... the guy had it in his mouth, and took it out and gave it back to them.

What do they do with it then? Do they throw it in the wastebasket? Do they throw it down the sink? How do you dispose of unused "Christ?"

Please.

Death threats? I don't think so.

What he did was sacrilige but I really don't that somebody threatened his life. Please.

NO. It would be placed in the tabernacle.

For how long? Would you or anyone else want to receive a Eucharist wafer that's been in someone else's mouth?

Forever? Or does it turn back into a cookie then?

No. It would not be put in somebody else's mouth.

This has happened before (people stealing the host).

Here is one such example.

Ordinarily and usually a host will eventually deteriorate naturally. Once this happens the hosts are disposed of through a sacristy which is a special drain that leads back to a consecrated place in the earth.

Does the decomposition follow that of decomposing flesh, or decomposing baked goods?

Typically all hosts are consumed at some point. Either in subsequent masses (after being placed back into the tabernacle) or by the celebrant after mass.

Shouldn't the wafer remain fresh forever, like the Incorruptibles? How can Christ's actual body rot? Do the bacteria which "deteriorate" the Host become sanctified? Do the molecules given off as waste products have any salvific effect, being as how they are the atoms of Christ's actual body?

I can't fathom how that's supposed to be an answer to my question.
Seamaster

Christ's flesh does not rot.

If the accidents deteriorates it is presumed that the substance (body, soul, flesh and divinity of Christ) has vacated the host. At that time the host is disposed of in a solemn way.

This isn't a common occurance, however, as consecrated hosts are measured and appropriated so that all are consumed.

What am I not answering?

The Sacristy is the room where chalices, ciboria (plural for ciborium), and the priests' vestments are kept. Typically, this is where the priest, deacon, and altar servers put on their vestments before Mass. In the Sacristy, there is also the Sacrarium (sink that drains directly to the ground, rather than the sewer) in which chalices and ciboria are cleansed after Mass. The nature of the drain is such that any remaining drops/particles of the Eucharistic species will be returned to the earth (to a place where it will not be trampled under foot) and not the municipal sewage system.

Put simply, it is an act of reverence towards Christ.

Re: the death threats. This sounds a bit overblown and possibly sensationalized. In the video, the guy who took the host said he feared for his safety. The OP mentions death threats. Now, I don't doubt some overly-zealous college students may have reacted strongly, but these kids tend to be a dog that is all bark and no bite.

That being said, I hereby beseech the Holy Father to call another Crusade to stamp out this sort of sacrilege! That kid had better watch out for the Swiss Guard.

It really is very rare that you have to dispose of any hosts. Typically when there are extra consecrated hosts, they are stored inside a tabernacle in the church. They can then be used in future masses or communion services.

Thanks...I meant Sacrarium not sacristy.

It is not a hard concept.... if you take communion, you consume it right there (I won't even get into why you participated).

If you would have consumed it right there, nobody would have known or cared.

Why can't you just respect the beliefs of the church you are visiting, and if you don't feel you are able to do so, don't go?

Doesn't seem like such a hard concept to follow. This thread has already pretty much gone like every other thread on this board. It's an opportunity to belittle Catholic beliefs.

you were the one making the scene by not simply participating in the communion.

Oh no "I am such and such religion and what you said before communion wasn't good enough. I have to say my own prayer because your religion sucks"

Silly religious traditions, rules, whatever you want to call them are just that. But if you enter their church, you ought to follow their rules or stay at your own

i've never heard of anyone taking communion back to their seats, regardless of denomination.

is this what everyone does in the church you regularly attend? did you not have time to say your prayer before going up?

The guy took a cracker. As if it werent mind-boggling enough that catholics actually believe they are consuming the blood and body of christ, they now think itis a sin to walk out of church with a effing cracker.

I thought even Protestants treated the Lord's Supper with some respect and reverence. But apparently its just an "effing cracker" to you.
