read the following however you want, but i'll preface with the fact that i'm not trying to beat my chest and try and act like i know more than everyone else...

mhayden - i was going to ask the same question(s) as NoAC...what bands have you booked? what venues? what nights?

I've promoted the HELL out of a bunch of shows and people still don't show up. I'm sorry, I don't care how you think I come off, I did/do have a grasp of the demographic of CS. I've also promoted shows outside CS. Its very hard to debate things on here without you thinking i'm trying to come off as "i'm the ****," which is not what I'm trying to do at all...i'm just providing facts and my own experience. I've worked in and around the music industry for almost 6 years now, so I am pretty knowledgeable. I've also worked with NoAC, Juan, and countless others on shows. It just seems as though no one every takes a budget into consideration when they just start asking how much promo was done, or "why don't you book so and so."

Juan and I pulled in over 500 people for a show at shadow canyon with a pre-show budget of under $20 with a lineup that didn't include a HUGE headliner, so its possible, but if you count in what our profit was and how many hours we put in...we were both probably working for less than $3 and hour. Its just not always possible to devote that much time to a show on a budget that small. If you have the budget for radio and print advertising, it makes a difference, but even that doesn't guarantee a turnout either.

CS is a VERY tough market for live music (texas country not included of course). I was able to get alot of my friends in CS out to shows b/c they always heard me talking about bands or knew the bands i was on the road with or going to see all the time. but for most people in CS they only know what's on the radio, and CS radio sucks.

btw, I will garuntee fair to midland selling out their show. They are huge in Texas.
AggieOO
How long do you want to ignore this user?
huge is a relative word...i've only been out of texas for 5 months, but maybe they've blown up in the past 5 months.

Maybe you should re-read the entire thread before jumping again. I don't know how many times I have to continue to point out, but I neve called BS on anyone saying that Band X was too expensive to bring in or not worth the money.

The only comment I called BS on was saying that OAR would have an "uncertain draw" in College Station. If *marketed correctly*, an OAR concert would sell out any venue in College Station save for Reed Arena very quickly.

As for Widespread Panic -- I originally said that I never saw a single promotion for any Wide Spread Panic concert. Now it turns out the concert in reference was in like '96 or '97. Comparing BCS in '96 to BCS in '06 is apples and oranges.

Bands like OAR and Widespread may not be *affordable* -- I never once doubted that. But to say they wouldn't draw if marketed correctly is a load of crap.

go to the beta, fiji, ka, sae, sigma chi houses and just say the worlds OAR, widespread panic, tell them when and you won't be able to move in the place.
AggieOO

myhayden - the first couple sentences were in direct reference to you, which you still haven't answered. the rest of that post was in general and not just referencing THIS thread, but what i've read in the past.

widespread's draw would be uncertain in CS. If a frat was paying for the show, yes, they frat and sororities would pack it. but if the show was done independently, there's no guarantee that they'd show up, no matter how much promotion is done. that crowd is too unpredictable (except that they will be at the tap and the library).

i doubt you will ever agree, but this is my opinion backed with/formed from fact and my experience of the music scene in CS from 96-05.

you guys should get coldplay! EVERYBODY loves coldplay.
houstontexan
How long do you want to ignore this user?
00, it doesn't have to put on by a frat...

widespread and OAR are to frats as cocaine is to strippers.
AggieOO
How long do you want to ignore this user?
fine, i give up...i know nothing. now everyone is happy.

one i thing i can say (and i'm sure NoAC and Juan agree) is that I'm glad I don't have to deal with the CS music scene anymore.

Then I'd like to reiterate the question you still haven't answered.

What acts have you booked in College Station?

I'm quite proud of you... Not sure I ever asked how many you've booked, as I really didn't care. That was your talking point, not mine.

Blizz and Everett were involved, which is the kiss of death for actually getting any kind of project completed.
