I'll second or third Ender's Game, but I want it to be an animated miniseries.

My choice is a little different because it's a non-fiction book, and there has already been a very bad made-for-TV movie made about it, but I would love to see a movie based on Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air. I think the visuals could be stunning, and the story is very compelling.

I agree with The Lovely Bones and The House of Leaves. Great books! Although I think The House of Leaves would make a better movie than The Lovely Bones.

I'd love to see both the Belgariad and the Mallorean made into a miniseries.

House of Leaves would be an incredible movie if they did it right.

Pillars of the Earth would also be a good choice.

Definately more Master and Commander.

The Historian, a new story regarding the hunt for Dracula.

Any Western, I miss them.

I may have to pick up House of Leaves and The Historian tonight in addition to Harry Potter

Comanche Moon by McMurtry

I would like to see the last in the Lonesome Doeve epic made only if they don't screw it up by letting an Arquette in it

Second the nomination for Larry McMurtry's Moving On. It is the best coming of age in urban Texas novel ever written and has a slew of good characters. It is also one of the best novels about college students ever published.

Another McMurtry novel that ought to be filmed is All My Friends Are Going to be Strangers.

I agree and I also thought the one that was made was horrible.

Latest news on the Ender's Game movie:

The Belgariad would be a lot of fun -- I'd agree with that. Also good, but darker, would be the Camber of Culdi series. I'd love to see someone (maybe Peter Jackson? Ridley Scott?) try to film POTE.

I'm also still waiting, albeit rather impatiently, for Balling The Jack and/or London Fields to be filmed. (There just aren't enough movies about darts, and either of these would make great movies, especially London Fields.)

Ugh. No thanks. I know this series has a very loyal following, but it's horribly overrated IMO.

Stephen King's DESPERATION

It's actually pretty decently cast. As far as King miniseries go, they are generally pretty faithful but obviously constricted by budgets. The Shining followed the book closely (though all 3 major roles were miscast IMO). The Stand was done very well (though Flagg was miscast). The recently released Salem's Lot was quite good IMO.

Thanks for reminding me though -- I need to re-read Desperation. Good book.

Far too complex and "symbolic" to be made into a movie... That, and to actually flesh it out would make it around a 40 hour movie

Some of Jack Higgins books, you could do a Sean Dillon series.

My nomination: Trevanian's Shibumi.

What should NEVER be made into a movie: Umberto Eco's Focult's Pendulum. I've been plowing through this read for 4 months and am only half-way through. I may shoot myself before I'm finished.

The Dark Tower would be wonderful if done right, but that would be super long and super expensive. Hollywood wouldn't do it right. If they did it, they'd have to put in other side movies for things like Salem's Lot and parts of Hearts in Atlantis too, to have the same actors play trans-movies.

Desperation would be great as long as they got the whole picture and maybe did part of it about the story in The Regulators. Maybe a two part series?

Also, The Long Walk would be kind of weird, but pretty cool. That might be better left as a book though.

I know these are SK books, but I'm still moderately young and I've been trying to catch up with him for a few years around classes and such. He wrote a lot. What my brothers and I would have called a buttload 10 years ago.

The White Plague by Frank Hebert of Dune fame... only this movie wouldn't suck b/c it is based in modern-day. Also, would be topical as the lead character is fighting terrorism.

Thomas Covenant would be cool but only through the first 3 or so books, beyond that things started getting a little too fanciful...

The Lovely Bones?!?

It was a good book, but I don't think I could stand watching a movie of that, it would be really hard to do because of her writing style also.

The Star Wars New Jedi Order series. Some of them almost read like a screenplay, but you'd have to have 6 or 7 films to do it justice.

Salvatore's Drizzt saga. I'd especially enjoy the Dark Elf trilogy.

NoAC, I stopped reading SW books about the time the New Jedi Order series started. Are they any good? Did Timothy Zahn write any? I always thought his Star Wars books were the best.

I read the very first one..... "The Crystal Shard?" is that the name of it? I thought it was amazing. How are the rest of them? That was about ten years ago at least. I was on a big Dragonlance kick.

Which by the Way either The Dragon Lance Legends or Chronicles series should be made into a movie. That would be awesome.

I have always thought Red Storm Rising would be his best made to movie book, though.

As a fan of the late Cold War era and this being my favorite book of all time, I whole-heartedly agree. However, a single movie could never do RSR justice. Clearly a multi-part miniseries on HBO is in order.

"House of Leaves would be an incredible movie if they did it right."

Unfortunately, they wouldn't do it right. The book was at least four dimensional. It had a "Neverending Story" quality to it. You had the story of the author, the story of the people in the house, and then the story that you tell people recounting your own adventures while reading the book.

The only way this book could be done justice on the big screen is if they just showed the life of someone actually reading the book and diving into the individual stories. You would have a very complicated film about a guy reading a book about a guy writing a book about a house that gets bigger from the inside-out.

As far as I am concerned, the only movie that was better than the book was Fried Green Tomatoes. The rest of the world should become more literate and read more books instead of going to the moives.

Since its such a long series there are definitely a few that fall flat. You'll see a few plotlines that get abandoned by authors further in the series, but for the most part, I'd say those are plotlines that were stupid to begin with.

Zahn's trillogy was great, but the scope of the NJO is just so much more epic. The idea of a galactic invasion is just meant for Star Wars.

Crystal Shard was the first book, but it was part of a trilogy where you really need to read all 3. The Dark elf trilogy is a prequel trilogy that I enjoyed more than his first. After that, there's a few more series in order and many branching novels that I haven't gotten into. It's definitely worth picking up again.

and just FYI, Drizzt takes place in the Forgotten Realms universe so you won't find much Drangonlance crossover.
