My hope is that MJ doesn't recover her memories for S5 and we get black cat for a movie. Then you go back to MJ in S6

Thought it was good not great.

The beginning montage where he's just being Spider-Man fighting crime was great and my favorite part. That could have been the whole movie for me.

This was Tom Holland's best performance in any of the Spider-Man films.

Overall there were some really cool action sequences. Loved the Hulk fight. Punisher with a touch of levity actually makes him a better character. The Jean story arc felt sloppy. Personally I'd put this behind No Way Home and Homecoming.

I wanted Black Cat too, but this would have been the film to do it in. After all, IIRC she's into Spidey but not Peter.

You don't bring back Zendaya so prominently, have her reunite with Peter, then have him get with some other chick in the next film because she's not as into him. Not without a clear breakup ( la Star-Lord and Gamora). Otherwise Peter is just a dog.

Also Holland and Zendaya are married so… yeah. Not happening.

Thought it was really good. Would have liked a tad more resolution with the Ned/MJ storyline where they're hanging out again.

Bernthal had always been good as Frank and I loved the Hulk fight with him.

I'm very curious with the Xmen plot line going forward. The last iteration were younger actors. Sadie Sink was really good and I think that's a great casting.

Was maybe a shade too long. What is Peter doing for money to afford that size loft in Greater NYC

I enjoyed it, and I liked some of the Easter eggs I caught and a lot of his villains gallery were shown for a few seconds without being used to slow down the plot. With that being said, I never thought I'd see Ramrod in a marvel movie. Yes, there is a villain named Ramrod.

Great friggin movie!!!

One question, as I haven't kept up with all the TV shows. Is there one where Spider-Man and The Punisher meet, and I missed it? Or did they just meet somewhere off camera (assuming Staten Island). Normally, I'd just assume the later, but with all the Marvel stuff I'm not sure if I missed something.

Off camera. Peter has been operating for four years. It is just assumed they met over that time

I'm in the camp that rates this only behind Spiderman 2,

Destin Daniel Cretton just has a knack for shooting action sequences and it brought a really fresh take on Spider-Man's abilities. I'm all for seeing him tackle more Marvel properties.

The cast really brought their A game with their performances. Tramell Tillman was great as Metzger and he'll be a great foil for the mutant saga.

The Aunt Mae scene also unexpectedly got me in the feels. Great foreshadowing through the first act to lead up to that moment.

That being said, there was A LOT going on in this movie. I feel like Tombstone got the shaft with his tiny role. He's a really great character and they should give him more to do in the future. The hand were there for...reasons? It made for some great visuals and I love seeing wire work over a CGI slopfest, but that was just kinda handwaved. I also get why Bruce Banner needed to be part of the story, but the Hulk was also just kinda there for a cool fight scene, as well. The setup for the mutant saga was pretty heavy handed, I'm just not sure how it'll all connect after Secret Wars.

Also, is Frank Castle just out and about now? Shouldn't he be a fugitive?

Portraying Jean Grey in this way, not just breaking a few laws to find her sister but literally killing people, is a mistake.

I'm trying to remember, but I don't think Jean Grey killed anyone. In the opening scene, it looked like they cleared out of the prison before the tank blew. She shot two Damage Control guards, but it showed them getting up later, and at the end she just froze everyone. I don't believe she killed anyone.

There was the guy she led into traffic to get hit by a car. I guess he could have survived but that felt a little too fast

The guy hit by a car definitely died, no way he survived that. And while technically, yes, we don't have 100% proof that anybody else died consider there was the tank barreling through half of NYC, the building exploding, and on and on. Even if all of that happened with miraculously no one else dying, my point is her intent when doing all of this...she gave no f***s about anyone else and whether they got hurt while she was bouncing around from one innocent person's body to the next. This Jean Grey was a bad guy plain and simple, and her "redemption arc" at the end was too quick. On top of that she really ended up facing zero consequences for all the chaos, desttuction, and harm she caused.

That could have all been avoided if instead of Jean Gray, they had simply decided to introduce Emma Frost as the bad guy for this movie. They could have still introduced Jean Gray as well, but rather have Jean operating in the background, using the chaos created by Frost to track down her lost sister. Perhaps even have Jean occasionally interfere with Frost's plans by using her own powers to save some innocent bystanders (instead of being the person putting them in danger). Ta-da, you've introduced the mutants and X-men into this universe via TWO of the main characters you planned on being in the upcoming X-men movies anyway, plus you've preserved Jean's status as a truly good person.

But Jean Gray is unhinged. There is a whole movie where it is revealed that Xavier has put locks on her mind to "tame" her.

I'm no X-man expert by any means, but no, Jean Grey is not introduced as or originate as a bad guy in the comics. Eventually they have her go through the Dark Phoenix storyline. But Jean Grey is not inherently a bad guy.

Dang good. Pretty dang good. Not as good as No Way Home but given the massive nostalgia trip that movie was that's ok.

It did take a while to get going. Probably could've been shorter.

That being said I liked how manipulative Jean Grey was. I know this version of her is not like the OG comics or cartoon…but that's ok. They took the super powerful part of her using powers for bad and correcting that in a different angle and that's ok. They've changed things here and there with other characters as well.

Was fun getting to see the Hulk finally Hulk out again. Loved that sequence.

I am trying to figure out the handshake at the end with Ned…are we to suggest that somehow Jean doing that big power thing at the end got his memories back? I'll read through this thread after posting but really curious to hear ideas on that one.

I feel like that might have been a bit of a plot hole. They made it clear that MJ has zero memory of Peter. I can see the handshake by itself being more of a muscle memory/instinct thing; however, Ned then seems to realize who Peter is. That's the part that seemed like a bit of a plot hole, not the handshake itself. I think it would have been better to just have them do the handshake and have Ned say something along the lines of, "That was weird. How did I know to do that?"

Only thing missing is a great pop punk sound track with Yellowcard and Dashboard Confessional bangers.

That was so awesome! Honestly I might put it above NWH because of the action and character development.

I also want a Punisher Deadpool buddy cop type movie now. Hope this isn't the last time we see the Punisher.

Did the post credit scene tease Battleworld or am I thinking too much into it?

Ned is really smart and I think he simply puts things together. He's always had this thing for Spider-man thanks to being saved a lot during high school. Then they're hanging out having a blast. MJ calls him Peter in front of her. Then he has this muscle memory reaction to the handshake and hearing the name. I think he is realizing in the moment that mainly 1) That this Peter is also Spider-man and 2) That they have some sort of strange connection (erased past)

Came up with an idea on the way home with the kids.

At the end of NWH, when Peter, MJ, and Ned are saying their goodbyes, Ned and Peter do the handshake.

Now…the spell makes everyone forget Peter Parker, not Spider-Man. They even mention a few times in the movie MJ and Ned having multiple memories of being rescued by Spider-Man and not knowing who he is. But they know Spider-Man.

So Ned would still remember doing the handshake with Spider-Man at the end of NWH. Then, he learns Spider-Man's name in BND is Peter. Then you have them interacting being friendly and quoting things they both knew about in BND.

Combine all that and you get:

1. Ned hanging out with Spider-Man getting unknown nostalgic memories.
2. Ned learning Spider-Man's name is Peter.
3. Ned doing a band shake he remembers doing with Spider-Man and at the same time realizing that Spider-Man is Peter.

Don't know if that's the angle they're going with but that's the best I got.

I think they made it clear that kissing won't bring her memories back. Jean even made a comment that MJ would probably puke if she found it true love's kiss saved them.

I haven't watched NWH since it was in theaters, so I don't remember everything. If Ned did the handshake with Spider-Man (not as Peter) then I think your theory is definitely correct. He would still remember doing the handshake with Spidey, and then he could put the pieces together from there. Good call. Your theory is better than mine.

I was pretty convinced that Jean would restore MJ/Ned's memories of Peter at the end, or somehow allow them into Peter's memories.

Seemed like an obvious way to let them reunite with Peter but I wonder why they didn't take that route.

I left with the distinct impression that Jean *did* restore MJ/Ned's memories. Or, rather, Jean unlocked whatever needed to be unlocked for them to each eventually start remembering on their own. Then I came across these tweets and am more convinced than ever...

Quote:

I think Jean grey unlocked both their old memories. We saw MJ crying while frozen. Later she was on the roof holding the black dahlia necklace which was a gift from Peter and smiling. When Jean possessed Bruce what did we get? Savage hulk, not Professor Hulk and he remembered Peter too. So I think Jean grey must have helped mj get her memory back.

Quote:

The Real Reason Ned Remembered Peter in 'SPIDER-MAN BRAND NEW DAY'

The handshake didn't magically make Ned remember Peter.

Jean Grey had already started breaking through everyone's blocked memories with her psychic bubble. We literally see her unlock Savage Hulk, and MJ is crying while frozen, even though she can't move. That doesn't feel accidental.

The handshake was just the final thing that connected the dots for Ned.

MJ still doesn't fully remember Peter, but she clearly remembers loving Spider-Man. That's why the Black Dahlia necklace suddenly means something to her again.

Even Peter buying flowers at the end makes me think he sensed Jean's powers changed something and wanted to see if MJ would finally remember him.

I don't think the ending is about muscle memory at all. I think it's Jean Grey slowly undoing Strange's spell.

(I disagree that Peter was buying flowers for MJ, though. I just think he was about to visit Aunt May's grave again.)

No word yet on if he's in Doomsday or not (I'm assuming at least cameo), but he's definitely in Secret Wars.

After those two?

Holland isn't currently signed for another stand-alone Spider-Man movie, but in the wake of how massive this one was, I bet that changes soon. So, yeah, I would guess two more stand-alone entires, post Secret Wars, for two total trilogies, then he finally hangs up the suit for good.

I wonder how annoyed Spidey was getting with the small potato thing. People don't remember Peter Parker, but people should remember he battled Thanos multiple times. Now Yelena wasn't there for that but surely would have known about it
