I totally forgot about the flashback timeline teased at the end of season two. Looks like they're really leaning into that in season three, which is probably wise after last season started to feel like it was treading water a bit. Could be an interesting approach.

Also, just FYI, season four - the finale season - already wrapped filming this month, so it shouldn't be a long wait between seasons. Hopefully first half of 2027. Either way, they shot seasons three and four back-to-back, so I imagine this second half of the series will have some real cohesion/momentum heading into the home stretch

Thus far, this show would have benefitted from shorter seasons. It feels like season 1 and 2 both had lulls midway through their respective seasons. Contrived and sometimes nonsensical drama to advance the plot, bad acting, and so much wasted time putting Juliette in "danger" when we all know she wasn't dying. I don't need to see her wiggle in the water for 30 seconds of screen time while they do the "will she die??" It's one of many occasions where the scene was literally just filler. Tensionless peril. There were multiple offenders last season, with the worst being the bridge she tried to walk across (the scene took over 5 minutes of screen time).

Hoping season 3 - 4 will buck this trend because I otherwise really like the show.

I don't know how episode count or length work, but the first book presented a problem. There was too much for 10 episodes at a 45-60 minute runtime, but not enough for two seasons.

The last two books fit much better into one season each.

"started?" I was bored to tears & quit watching. Really loved the first season & might suffer through season 2 if the third one is any good.

I get the plot armor complaint, but are writers just not allowed to put main characters in danger at all? That feels pretty limiting. I try to get lost in those moments rather than sitting back and analyzing whether she'll actually die. Worth noting too that they did kill off what felt like main characters in the first two episodes, so they've shown they're willing to go there. Though yeah, her dying in an abandoned silo mid-series would have just torched the whole storyline, so that one was never really on the table.

I'm not completely disagreeing with you though. The show has been quite slow, which drives me crazy because you have all these major questions looming and they've mainly just been stacking more on top rather than answering any of them. Hoping S3 is a breath of fresh air on that front.

Ugh, amnesia?! Are you effin kidding me. They just invent ways to roll this mystery out as slowly as possible. I'm still looking forward to it, but it's a bit annoying.

Also, it looks like they are only releasing one episode on the premiere date; seems like most Apple shows start the seasons with two.

I loathe the laziness of amnesia as a plot device

I agree with all the above but it's more so they erased her memory than it is amnesia…right?

Didn't the midwife/fertility lady allude to/say the water supply was poisoned to suppress their memories? Amnesia or whatever it is seems to be on point for maintaining control in the silo.

I agree until they revealed they are drugging her. Looking forward to her secret meeting to learn the truth.

First episode drug at times but oddly enough I'm far more interested in the flashback timeline than I am the present one. Also, Common is starting to grate on me. His delivery is literally always the same.

Loved ep 3, it is moving far away from what I recall from the novels but it is good.

S3:E2 was a pretty interesting episode and while I'm not a huge fan of the pre-silo flashbacks at least now we have a better understanding of why relics are banned/highly regulated.

I read the books, so will probably watch all the way through. I'm waiting until the season is all available before starting, though.

I think this is a rare opportunity to actually improve on the books if they do it right. Some of the outside-the-silo stuff in the books is pretty weak.

I also sort of disagree with the Juliet being in danger bit. It's not really about the audience thinking she might die, it's more about the character enduring what she has to endure. In this case it gave Juliette some perspective on how hard it is to live in the other silo.

That's a central conflict of the show, and one Bernard had to deal with and now Juliette (though she doesn't remember all of it) and Camille have to deal with is that they have some amount of knowledge of what can happen when a Silo has the "safeguard procedure" enacted and having to balance people's personal freedoms against that knowledge.

I have read the first book and started season 1.

Now 6 episodes in...is the whole series a large departure from the books?

I'm not sure, but can we please not reveal any spoilers from the books in the thread? Or at least be sure to use the spoiler tags. Even if something seems vastly different, sometimes those details have a way and coming back into play later and that still act as a bit of a spoiler.
bobinator

There are some extremely major differences between the show and the book to this point, yes.

I finished ep 2. last night.

Brother is a badie, right? The hero engineer that saved NOLA with new underground drill tech. He is clearly not using an iPhone in an Apple show - confirmed bad guy. I also think he's the AI voice.

Other interesting thing is around the fighter jet tech being stripped down. Whatever the cloud goo is, it attacks modern tech. Hence the silos having such archaic computers, phones, etc. despite being built in modern times.
bobinator
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
We don't have to spoiler tag an episode that's out, surely.

I think you're off on the second one because there is advanced tech in the silos, most people just don't know about it.
Mr President Elect
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Yeah, I was kind of thinking the old tech in the silos was to not induce memories, which then got me thinking that maybe the stripped tech out of the jets was b/c they already started erasing their memories. But that would be weird to strip their memories and then have them fly a jet, or perhaps they stripped it mid flight hence why they all crashed
bobinator
How long do you want to ignore this user?

The tech that most people interact with in the silos is old so that it's easier to control and monitor. Who or whatever is in charge doesn't want the people inside the silo to advance technologically past the level they're currently at, and it/they want to limit the ability of mass communication within the silo.

That's why there's no elevators or lifts so people can move up or down it quickly, there's limits on how powerful magnifying glasses/scopes can be, etc.

Pretty good episode. I wonder if we are ever going to get old Juliette back or if she stays in this state with just enough glimpses of memory to save the day. I mean, if she doesn't die next week (kidding).

Also, loved the algorithm telling Camille why it chose her. And I really despise Robert. The way he loathes Juliette for pulling a gun on him in front of his kid, while he pulled a gun on Lukas in front of his mom, not to mention all the other things he has done.
bobinator

I imagine we're going to get her back VERY soon. Pretty good episode.

This show needs some more creative writers though. They needed the main characters to find that the dark web guy had been snatched up and the best they could come up with is that they drove back to town and then decided most of the way there that "actually, we do really need that tape, let's go back."

The acting has improved a little bit this season. Except common who is so bad it ruins every scene he is in.
