Galactic stoner country funk. The grooves are great and the instrumentation may be the best I've heard from the band, but I thought the lyrics don't really reach the heights of Passage du Desir, S&F, or Metamodern. Hasn't stopped from listening to it two or three times already.
I love it. I felt the lyrics were a bit out there as well. Almost as if he was writing stuff he felt / thought about that maybe wasn't right for his more mainstream music. Made me wonder if this will ever be a full release or something he keeps in this type of format.
I agree that the lyrics are pretty out there on some songs, but the band is definitely grooving. I've listened to it at least four times, and it gets better each time.
If you don't know what you're doing, do it quickly.
My favorite lyrical sequence is when he says "I'll be the banana and you'll be the split" then the background singers go "ohhhhh shiiiittttt" Hilarious!
Finally got my red vinyl in the mail this weekend and just completed my second listen.
Lyrics was the first thing I was going to say but you all beat me to it.
Also, I feel like this treads some of the same territory as "Sound & Fury" but not to nearly the same heights. S&F is a 10/10 album for me. I think Side B > Side A for me right now. This one is tracking in the 6-7 range but hopefully grows on me more and more.
I definitely favor his more country/grass sound. But his rock is really good. I appreciate his swings, shaking things up and doing whatever he wants. The good news for us as an audience is he is very talented and his swings, at least for me, are landing. I'll still go down and say that his Dood and Juanita is dramatically underrated. Incredible album, concept and execution.
The first two listens I was thinking "why is he singing about guitar chords... and then I actually listened and realized... "Stay on that D baby til you hit that G"
