Yes, I know it's a nearly 60-year-old book, but that doesn't make it fair game to spoil, even in winking fashion, without warning, as is currently happening in the other thread. So we're going to treat this thread basically as if the second book doesn't exist (which I, personally, haven't read yet either).

To be clear, Villeneuve's Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two are based on Frank Herbert's original book, Dune, while the third movie will be based on Herbert's second/follow-up book, Dune: Messiah, which doesn't yet have an official movie title, though it's looking more and more like it will, indeed, be titled Dune: Messiah as opposed to Dune: Part Three (though I could see Warner Bros potentially forcing the Part Three monicker for the sake of branding/consistency/confusion).

What *is* official is that Villeneuve & co begin filming this summer, per yesterday's report, for what is increasingly looking like a December 18, 2026 release, though that date isn't set in stone yet either.

As for the story itself, from what I understand, Herbert's Dune: Messiah is a very different animal from his first book, is heavy on political intrigue and philosophizing, is set 12 years later, and features very little action. That said, while it sounds like Villeneuve will honor the book as best he can, same as with the last two movies he's going to lean heavily on action here as well, taking certain liberties and bridging certain gaps in order to make this third movie feel more connected to the first two. In other words, while it will definitely feel different (with a time jump and, if anything, Villeneuve is using a different cinematographer this go around), because this is a big, Hollywood blockbuster trilogy, he probably can't veer as far in tone/plot as the third book does.

Either way, that's as far as we're going to go in this thread when it comes to book talk.

In the meantime, hopefully we start getting casting news and an official title/date announcement relatively soon…

I don't want to poke the bear or whatever, but that does that mean we shouldn't like speculate on who we'd like to see in the roles of new characters or which characters will be left in or out? It seems like basically anything woud be a spoiler if you haven't read the book(s) .

EDIT - Sorry I didn't see the other thread, my apologies

No worries. But yeah, I would do all the speculating in the other thread. I want to treat this one as if there's zero source material. I'm basically just going to post official news in this thread, and those of us who have never read the book can react/discuss based on that news, as if it were, say, the third Star Wars movie in a trilogy or whatever, where we have little clue as to what's coming next.

I first read Dune as a senior in high school when David Lynch's movie came out. It instantly became one of my favorite books, which remains the case all these years later. I read Dune Messiah in 1986. All I recall is that I did not enjoy it like I did Dune. I remember nothing of that book, what happens, characters, etc. I also know that reading that book was such a disappointment that I elected to stop with that series rather than move on to the third book. I am going to re-read it at some point before the movie comes out. Given how Dune Part 2 differed in certain respects from the book, I don't expect the movie to follow the book strictly.

It's so ridiculous that a new thread has to be made because grown ass adults can't help themselves from doing the *wink, wink* bull*****

It's inevitable that a casting announcement or two will slightly "spoil" the movie/book, but seeing as even I was aware of this character's return (based on all the discussion the past few years), which is now being widely reported, I figure it's a newsworthy item worth posting...

Now that this is public news, I was really hoping DV would handle this as an epilogue or end credits scene at the end of Part two. Would have been a cherry on the top of a nearly perfect movie. And would have been easier to hide.

That would have been great
