Edit: I guess Portman for Black Swan. But really both of those examples are more thriller than horror.
A movie where Natalie Portman makes out with Mila Kunis is neither horror nor thriller, but unquestionable proof that a benevolent higher power exists in this universe.

Glad to help. As a dad I don't get the chance to see many movies at the theater, of those I listed the only one I've seen at a theather was Dune 2. Thanks to streaming I have been able to see several of the others though.

Nominees I have been able to see thanks to streaming:
Conclave - I enjoyed this one, I know some people didn't care for the twist but I didn't have any issue with it.
Gladiator 2 - I hated it.
Nosferatu - This would have been great to see in a theater but I just couldn't make it happen.
A Real Pain - I thought it was fine, but something about it was just off for me. Culkin was the only nominee in supporting actor whose film I saw so I can't weigh in on whether someone else was more deserving. I can't put my finger on it but something about this movie felt unoriginal and that's what's bothered me about it. Eisenberg and Culkin were both exactly what you'd expect going in as well, there wasn't anything new or significant about either performance that made me think I was watching anything special. It's not bad by any means so I'm not meaning to be overly critical, it just missed the mark for me.
The Wild Robot - As a parent this one really hit the sweet spot for me between humor and heart, I really liked this one.

I'll wait for Anora and A Complete Unknown to hit Hulu. I'll need to rent The Brutalist, when I can pencil in a spare 3 hours anyway. I'll be forced to watch Wicked with my daughter at some point, I've seen the play twice with my wife so I thought I met my quota.

The only thing I've ever seen Eisenberg in is Superman when he played Lex and that taints my opinion of him...probably unfairly. I found him so annoying and miscast in that movie that it's hard for me to voluntarily watch anything else with him in it.

Nevermind. I've seen Zombieland but I have zero recollection of him in that film. Maybe I've just decided to purge him from memory because I don't like him. lol.

I tend to agree. He basically can only play neurotic. However, he's been in some decent to great movies.

I'd say The Social Network, Zombieland, Adventureland, and a little indie called End of the Tour, that I randomly rented from RedBox years ago and actually really enjoyed.

I think the thing that bugs me most about Demi Moore not winning is not necessarily her losing, but the fact that the Academy continues to disregard horror as a legitimate genre. (Snubbing Toni Colette for a nomination for Hereditary is maybe the worst example of this.)

I can't even think of the last major acting win for a horror movie since what, Silence of the Lambs?

Edit: I guess Portman for Black Swan. But really both of those examples are more thriller than horror.

Well, Madison was at least a former Ghostface?

I saw Sean with his family at a tiny BBQ joint in Eagle Rock (north east LA) last Saturday. Two minutes later Chris Ryan walked in and joined them. I've been less star struck seeing certain A-list celebs. I told my buddy I was with, "You don't understand, I've listed to those two people talk, on a weekly basis, over the past ten years, more than any other human beings on the planet." I have a business partner who actually knows Sean fairly well, so I had an in, but ultimately didn't want to bug them during their meal. Felt too fanboyish.
I, too, listen to most, if not all, of the Ringer movie podcasts weekly. When BS was coming to Austin, I jumped at the tickets. Not knowing who the guests were going to be. I was pretty chill but excited. I prefer CR and SF over BS, but I also love BS. Well, I got star-struck and giddy when all those guys and Shea came out on stage at the Paramount. It was a pretty cool event a few weeks ago.

That's awesome! I listened to that one last week. Would have been super cool to be there in person.

Wasn't bad!

I don't know their story, in particular, but there a couple great places out here founded/owned by Texans.
Havent visited in a while but Homestate has very Austin/SA style tacos.

Homestate unfortunately has the worst chips ever, and their queso could use some work, but yeah, damn near everything else is great. I do their breakfast tacos (the Pecos, in particular) all the time. In fact, I haven't eaten yet today, and I think you might have just incepted me....

In this instance, I think it was less about snubbing horror and more about snubbing a ****ty movie.

I didn't want to bring a bunch of negatively to The Substance thread, so I stayed out of it, but I absolutely hated that movie and hardly know anyone else who liked it either. I can handle the gore/body horror, and I totally get what it was going for in terms of satire, I just think it completely missed the mark, re: the latter. Yes, it was certainly memorable, and I can appreciate certain elements, but it could have been so much more effective in getting its message across if it was even slightly better-written. I don't know, it just felt lazy to me, on multiple levels, constantly aiming for shock above any kind of coherency or character work. There was a really good movie in there somewhere, but it needed someone like David Cronenberg to bring it out, not someone clearly trying to be a cheap imitation.

Anyway, I heard a lot of Academy members basically felt the same way. Granted, the Academy does have a bias against horror, I just don't think this was the movie to break through that bias.

I think he was contrasting your dislike of The Substance and love for The Brutalist to his dislike of The Brutalist and enjoyment of The Substance. In other words, it'd be a funny old world if we all thought alike.

What's the story with "Wicked" being shut out of major categories? Too commercial?

I get that, but I was using my opinion to make the larger point that a big swath of the Academy disliked The Substance as well, and not simply because it's horror. While the initial argument seemed to be that Demi lost because the Academy doesn't like horror. And I was merely saying that, in the minds of Academy, they didn't reward Demi because they felt she's in a bad movie, not because she's in a horror movie.

Could be saving the awards for the sequel coming out in Nov like LOTR Return of the King?

You're splitting hairs. We get that you think it's a ****ty movie. Just like I thought The Brutalist was a ****ty movie.

Doesn't change the fact that horror rarely gets recognized in the big categories. All I'm saying is this is just another example of that bias.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?

You're saying the Academy didn't award Demi because she was in a horror movie.

I'm saying if the Academy felt she was in a good movie, they would have given her the award, regardless of whether it was a horror movie or not.

It's not "splitting hairs."

There's an actual, tangible difference there.

I said they are biased against horror, which you already agreed with.

No, I'm not.

That's literally why I phrased my posts multiple times in terms of what certain members of the Academy felt.

Not only has it been widely reported that certain Academy members thought it was a bad movie, but I know a number of other people who thought it was a bad movie as well, in my commiserating with them.

In no way am I saying it's an objectively bad movie, though.

The only fact is that people exist who thought it was bad, and that a number of those people are also Academy voters.

Just my opinion, and certainly not trying to start another argument on this thread, but overall Wicked was just a notch above good. It wasn't spectacular, not enough to beat the eventual winners, other than the two categories it did win. And it did deserve to those categories.

I also think it's very difficult for Part 1 of a multi part series to win. They kind of set the precedent with LotR. You can win minor awards, but they are going to wait until the whole series is done before rewarding the big awards.

Ehhhh, that's how I took it when I first read your post. After rereading it, I can understand if you were trying to make two separate points. But just the way your whole statement reads it seemed like you were tying the two together.

You're speculating about whether they dislike it because it's a horror movie or because it's a bad movie.

Unless you went and asked everyone, you can't state this like a hard fact.

This is one easily of our weirdest arguments, considering you agree with my premise.

It is a 90/75 rating split on RottenTomatoes. So it's maybe not someone's cup of tea, but to me that at least is the marker of an objectively decent movie.

Most of the people I've talked to generally enjoy horror movies, but genuinely disliked this one.

And speaking of Sean Fennessey, he's specifically mentioned in multiple podcasts how he's spoken directly to Academy members who had a seething hatred for movie, and not because it was "horror."

So, yes, I *do* know why at least a chunk of people/voters didn't like the movie, which had nothing to do with its genre.

All was saying initially - in light of the prevailing opinion that because it's a popular movie it must also be a good movie, and thus the only reason it "failed" at the Oscars was because it was horror (an opinion I'm not attributing to you) - was simply that some people, myself included, could also dislike it because we felt it was a poorly-executed movie, not because it was a horror movie.

You're the one getting all bent out of shape over this.
