How am I bent out of shape? I'm responding to your [much longer] posts.

I said there is a bias against horror in the Oscars. You agreed.

You said they didn't like it because it's a bad movie. I disagree with this speculation.

The end.

You just seem VERY agitated that I challenged the quality of the movie, that's all.

I've never had a problem with what people like or dislike.

My issue was you suggesting you somehow knew how the entire Academy thought because of your feelings on the movie or the couple of folks you spoke to.

Bottom line is it doesn't matter whether they dislike it because of its genre or not, the point remains that the Academy is much more likely to dislike horror movies than your standard drama or even comedy.

This simply didn't happen. I made sure and chose my language specifically to not give that impression. You're the one who jumped to conclusions, hence my getting bent out of shape comment.

Saw all the updates and thought they decided to just go ahead and give Denis Villeneuve an Oscar…but alas…

Quote:

And I was merely saying that, in the minds of Academy, they didn't reward Demi because they felt she's in a bad movie, not because she's in a horror movie.

Right there. How could you possibly know that people's internal bias against horror is not the main factor in their dislike of the movie?

You say there's no correlation between the two. I'm saying, there very likely is.

We only saw The Substance and Dune in this list. We thought The Substance was shock and awe entertainment and kind of felt like this was more of a lifetime achievement nod for Demi although we thought she was good in the film.

The other thing we learned watching this is how utterly wrong we've been pronouncing Denis Villeneuve's name. Missed that by a mile.

Conveniently, you of course left out the sentence just before that where I said "swath of the Academy," clearly indicating that they're not a monolithic hive mind, and that I'm not ascribing that opinion to all Academy members, which is why I didn't feel the need to repeat the same clarification in the sentence you quoted above.

Again, for the umpteenth time, I'm talking about CERTAIN Academy members, not all Academy members, and I've already provided sourcing (Sean Fennessey's The Big Picture podcast, for instance), along with my own anecdotal experience, as to how I know that the horror element didn't factor into those certain opinions.

Good lord, dude, let it go.

Likewise, bruh.

My supporting evidence is basically the entire history of the Oscars and how little respect horror has gotten throughout its history.

I'm not saying they didn't dismiss it because it's horror!!!

I'm saying SOME of those people dismissed because they felt that it was simply a bad movie.

And that if they felt it was a good horror movie, that would have voted for it.

I'm not discounting you!

I'm adding an extra wrinkle!

That's all!

Holy ****, man.

That's a lot of laugh cry emojis, my man.

Again, this was weird debate. Not sure what anyone learned here.

In the end we both agree that there is a clear bias against horror and that it hurt Demi's chances.

My 2 cents probably isn't even worth that much due to inflation, but as much as I dearly loved Wicked, it seems unlikely it would win any acting awards since it's a musical. The nominations feel like tokens, letting them acknowledge that it was remarkably well done, a blast for most people to watch, and a throwback to how movies "used to be" with lots of singing and dancing. But because of its format, I suspect most of the voters didn't even bother trying to compare one acting performance to another, which is a shame. They should be able to view art as art, regardless of what form it takes - piggybacking off Mr. Spilner's point a bit.

I remember back in the 80s when Kevin Klline broke through and won as Otto in a Fish Called Wanda. You think that would have happened a few more times over the years, heck at least a nomination for someone who is pure genius in a comedy. Maybe there have been some and I just don't remember. RDJ in Tropic Thunder?

Gallifinakis (sp) in The Hangover comes to mind. Had we ever seen anything like that in a movie? Not me at least. Did he steal every scene he was in? Yes. Did he have a certain vulnerability beyond the jokes that made him a fascinating character? Certainly.

I don't have the faintest idea who votes for the Oscars, but you'd think after all this time they'd be willing to consider movies and roles that the majority of people clearly enjoyed rather than having to dig into all these bizarre films that no one saw except them and turn them into the anointed.

I'll be surprised if Wicked 2 gets even half as many noms as the first part did.

Another great performance last year was Naomi Scott for Smile 2, I thought nomination worthy but I pretty much wrote that one off due to it being a horror movie.
