Only watched the last little bit but several of the live updates said the political commentary was pretty limited and what was there was very "oblique." Lots of compliments for Conan as well.

All of my favorite movies won at least something except nosferatu. Great show all around. Conan was perfect. Positive energy minimal politics and without some obscure foreign film dominating everything. I've been a huge Sean baker fan since discovering him when willem dafoe was nominated for the Florida project and can't believe this happened. Reminds me of Damien chazelle skyrocketing to prominence. Watched the brutalist today in the living room and it was epic. Sad that I missed it in imax but will screen it in the media room for maximum sound effect.

Overall was able to watch 13 of the nominated films. My oldest son in college is all in to prestige cinema now and he had a watch party at his college apartment.

Pretty limited aside from one overt Trump dig by Conan. It was nice to have a mostly non-political presentation.

Overall a pretty good Oscars
The Bond tribute seemed out of place. Especially with no Bond actors or original singers of those songs.
A firefighter tribute with like 12 firefighters on stage was weird.
A song from the Wiz?

All of that could have used a second draft or someone with common sense reading over the idea.

Agree on all of this. Pulling The Wiz out of their ass may be the most culturally irrelevant thing I've seen in some time.

How was there not some kind of tribute to James Earl Jones who played one of the most iconic characters in cinema history? And then on top of that you had Luke Skywalker present an award and he doesn't mention him? Massive, weird miss. I'll give Mark a pass I guess because he's a socially awkward dork but damn.

Maybe Sean Baker will finally discover that there are people besides sex workers on this planet for which to write movies about.

I saw Sean with his family at a tiny BBQ joint in Eagle Rock (north east LA) last Saturday. Two minutes later Chris Ryan walked in and joined them. I've been less star struck seeing certain A-list celebs. I told my buddy I was with, "You don't understand, I've listed to those two people talk, on a weekly basis, over the past ten years, more than any other human beings on the planet." I have a business partner who actually knows Sean fairly well, so I had an in, but ultimately didn't want to bug them during their meal. Felt too fanboyish.

Lol... Anora was a bit of a mess. There were some entertaining parts, but Best Picture? I think it just had the most Academy viewers due to the overabundance of boobs.

I think the thing that bugs me most about Demi Moore not winning is not necessarily her losing, but the fact that the Academy continues to disregard horror as a legitimate genre. (Snubbing Toni Colette for a nomination for Hereditary is maybe the worst example of this.)

I can't even think of the last major acting win for a horror movie since what, Silence of the Lambs?

Edit: I guess Portman for Black Swan. But really both of those examples are more thriller than horror.

Don't forget comedy, Marisa Tomei is the last one I can remember who won for a comedic role.

I, too, listen to most, if not all, of the Ringer movie podcasts weekly. When BS was coming to Austin, I jumped at the tickets. Not knowing who the guests were going to be. I was pretty chill but excited. I prefer CR and SF over BS, but I also love BS. Well, I got star-struck and giddy when all those guys and Shea came out on stage at the Paramount. It was a pretty cool event a few weeks ago.

I was there too and share this sentiment, although I still prefer BS the most (Rewatchables are much better when he is on, IMO). The live show was simultaneously fun to see and also the geekiest I've ever felt in my life. No regrets.
