I'm a little surprised the Academy still uses the terms Actor and Actress. You guys should still be on board with them for that reason.
Didn't that go away for a while? I swear there was a period it was Male and Female Actor.

The wikipedia entry for Emilia Perez is just incredible.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emilia_P%C3%A9rez

Quote:

The film was positively received in the United States and Europe, earning praise from both territories for its direction, music, performances, and themes. Internationally, it polarized critics, especially in Mexico, who criticized its cultural representation, songwriting, use of stereotypes and Spanish dialogue. The film has also been criticized by LGBTQ critics, who called out its transphobic tropes, reductive storyline and cisgender perspective about transness, with media monitoring organization GLAAD calling it "a step backward for trans representation."

So basically liberal white Americans and Europeans (aka Academy voters) praise the film while the people it portrays all pan it...you can't make this stuff up.

The insane far left in a nutshell.

It's basically "Latinx" in movie form. A term most hispanics hate but white extreme liberals still insist on using because of how good it makes them feel and what it virtue signals to other white extreme liberals.

I've said it before, but you can absolutely tell Latinx was invented by a white English speaking person. If a native speaker had invented it, it would be pronounced lateen-equis, not Latin-ex.

Well this year men have a good chance of sweeping both awards. Let's hear it for men!

I blame Greta Gerwig and everyone else on the Canne jury for giving Emilia Perez legs. It only won the Jury award.

Uh, in this case its clear that the people who gave Emilia Perez so many nominations are the ones who made it political.

I think movies can get lost in the awards campaigns that get built around them when they weren't made for that to begin with. This is a movie made by a French director that premiered at Cannes. Not your typical Hollywood Oscar bait. It won awards and acclaim there (which often does not translate to US success or acclaim). Netflix saw it was successful there, bought it, and has been campaigning for it HARD ever since.

Look I'm not saying Emilia Prez is GOOD, but….but…it is compelling in a watching a train wreck kind of way. It's one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen and mashes up genres in a creative, if scattered, way.

The performances of Saldana and Gomez are actually really impressive. I think Saldana would be the front runner in the lead category if she had opted to go that route too, tbh.

I don't think it deserves ALL the awards chatter (as many noms as Titanic?), and it is baffling to me why it has this political element of support considering it's not really pro-trans in any way. It's just a story about a trans drug cartel leader and all the fall out from his choices, mostly bad.

BUT…if you watch the movie and try and drown out all that chatter and just take it at face value, it's entertaining in its own way. Like that clip from above…that moment is supposed to be absurd and weird in the movie. It's not like the tone of the movie is straight serious. It's very bizarre and that's kind of the point.

+1. I watched this movie last night without knowing anything about it other than it got a lot of Oscar nominations. I want to preface this by saying I'm typically not a fan of artsy Oscar type movies, musicals, and Im definitely anti woke and pro Trump. And I still really enjoyed this movie and my girlfriend did too. We both talked a lot about it afterward.

It is definitely a very weird and over the top movie and yet it all works. The acting was great (Saldana, Gomez, and trans dude all did a great job) the directing, the songs are all pretty catchy and enjoyable. Im actually planning to rewatch it because I enjoyed it so much. My only gripe was the abrupt ending but even then its a very minor gripe. I didn't get the sense that the director set out to make a woke trans movie.

Funny enough, it seems as if the main backlash from Hollywood and the left is that the movie is not woke enough: inaccurate depiction of a trans person, no mexican actors so its not authentic enough, french director making a mexican movie, Selena Gomez spanish accent, glorifying the cartels etc. It feels like Latino dominant movies face different criticism than most movies, I remember Lin Manuel Miranda getting a lot of backlash for In the Heights and not having enough Afro Latinos in the movie. Same for Jennifer Lopez in Selena, people were outraged that a Puerto Rican was playing a Mexican in the movie.

I call out the far left when it's warranted. The problem is, we're next door to one of the most far right echo chambers on the internet, the spillover from which has me defending Hollywood more than I'd like, from all kinds inaccurate insanity, making me sound to some people way less "normal" than I actually am.
F16 is more normal than Hollywood will ever be.

To be fair, it's no worse than the overall list of nominees and films to be celebrated this year. 2024 was mostly a stinker. Let's hope for a better 25 in the world of cinema.

Dune 2 should win every single category. It's that good. Chalamet for best actor, Ferguson for best actress,, DV for best director and screenplay, best special effects, best soundtrack, best cinematography, best costume, Christopher Walken for best Christopher Walken I could keep going.

And in the interest of outraging everyone, I think it's better than Return of The King, by a lot.

Yeah, no actor or director can openly criticize a film that has anything to do with an LGBTQwhatever topic. And calling something a "singular experience" is laughably obvious code for "I have no genuine praise for this but don't dare criticize it".

This thread alone proves how wrong you are. Hollywood incorrectly pretends this movie is good while F16 correctly acknowledges that leftism is bad.

Scene: Last night. Our living room.

Me: Would you ever want to watch Nosferatu? I've seen two of this guys other movies and they were really fascinating films.

Wife: I really don't want to watch a bloody and gory movie.

Me: Ok. How about The Substance?

Wife: I do want to see that because I've heard Demi Moore is great in it and got the Oscar nom.

Me: Cool. We will watch that. I've heard it's kind of wild so should be interesting.

[2.5 hours later]

Wife: OMFG. What in the literal F did we just watch???!!!!

Me: ***laughing my ass off***

So you have 6 socks I take it. I never said the movie was good. The reviews I've read and the plot synopsis sound like something I wouldn't enjoy even if it was a great movie in that genre. But your response is so clearly driven by your politics while you sit here and whine about the politics of Hollywood personalities. If you'd like to discuss the difference between sex and gender, I'm happy to discuss somewhere else.

I've got zero socks and this is the only account I have ever used.

The fact that you think there is a difference between sex and gender proves my point. Gender is not a social construct. The supposed "difference" is. And it's a construct only followed by insane leftist fools.

You cannot call anybody insane.

Buddy, gender is very much a construct. How people portray and understand sex is by definition constructed. It is not locked in time or biology. It's a function of human society. Look up the history of high heels.

So this pretty much kills Emilia Perez's chances of winning. I'm sure Zoe Saldana still has a chance to take Best Supporting Actress, but otherwise the left-leaning types are up in arms over all these tweets and it looks like more are still being found. No one's going to vote for this movie now, thank God…

Trump is re-elected…

… in response, a contingent of far-left Hollywood loons defiantly give a wildly undeserving trans/hispanic movie 13 Oscar nominations…

… all while audiences, critics, and even hispanics all say they detest the movie…

… and in the end, in the most fitting/ironic fashion, the trans/hispanic lead of the movie somehow turns out to be a raging racist.

In other words, this feels like the official end of virtue signaling, self-serving, back-patting identity politics Hollywood.

The way this all backfired is just incredible.
