If I'm being totally honest, I was pretty bored for at least half of this movie. And it felt at least an hour longer than it needed to be.

But the highs were pretty high, enough to make it worth watching in the theater.

I would say probably in the bottom 5 or so of Nolan's filmography for me.

I know complaining, mocking, being cynical and anti-woke is all the rage, but below is exactly how I feel.

Two of the greatest blockbuster directors of all time are currently at the peak of their powers, at the exact same time, and this weekend we get a pop culture event experience showcasing both of their efforts, both movies coming out within six months of each other.

Throw in Joe Kosinski, Christopher McQuarrie, Matt Reeves, James Mangold, Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, etc, and we're in the golden age of the auteur event movie / blockbuster.

As the MCU / DCU / Star Wars franchises all continue to struggle, I'll take this era - and what's to come - over just about anything else over the past 15 years or so.

Time is relative. Bad movies feel longer than they are.

So I lucked into a ticket tonight after work (I live across the pond), and this movie is pretty awesome. Is it my favorite Nolan film? I don't think so, but I really enjoyed it.

I feel like, and this might be with anything, if you go into this movie with a frown thinking it'll be bad, you might not like it. I had a few nitpicks on one character (none of the ones discussed here), and it felt it dragged a bit in the second act. But the set pieces are undeniably badass, and the last act/ending is simply stunning. Nolan is a freaking wizard. It was worth the hype IMO.

I already had tickets to go see it with a group on Sunday afternoon and can't wait for a repeat showing. See it on the biggest screen you can.

was the modern language an annoyance, or not too bad?

Brits aren't the right people to ask. They have zero command of the English language and mispronounce virtually everything.

This, for people that invented the language, they aren't good at speaking/writing it.

Thought it was great. 8/10 on the Nolan scale. I have pretty low expectations of Matt Damon in general so he actually was better than I thought he'd be.

First 20 minutes are slooow but then you get dropped into the fun pretty quickly.

For any review, or fake review that says it was disorganized or all over... This was one of Nolans simpler films to follow so I just don't get that.

Final act was great.

Just got out. Surprising no one, I did really like it. I need to think about it more and probably see it again to figure out how I'd compare it to the rest of his filmography.

I totally understand the pacing complaints, but that is the story of the Odyssey, broken up like that. I think Nolan does a good job of weaving it together and picking up the pace towards the end.

I had no trouble with the audio. I think the colors are beautiful, it's just most of the costumes/landscapes are earth tones. But there are some colors that really pop a few times.

Elliot Page is distracting but not in the movie enough to really bother me. The role Page plays is interesting, and I'm not sure if Nolan intended what was posted earlier about it or not. Lupita was effective with very little screen time. I'm sure another actress could have pulled off the role, but she did have a very heavy lift with little runway and nailed it (specifically one moment, IYKYK).

Everyone else was awesome.

I think it's worth seeing in the theater for sure, but if you've been bored by Nolan in the past, then you may skip it and wait till streaming.

Yeah I have a personal distraction with Page too, but the moment I was about to get a little tired, they were done with their part in the movie.

I'll also say, which is with any Nolan film, there were a few cheesy scenes and some robotic acting here and there but it comes with the territory of his movies.

I just got back. Here are my answers to a lot of the questions/concerns that have been brought up on this thread.

1. Is it too long? Yeah, probably. I think they could have cut at least half an hour.
2. Is the story disjointed? I felt like the beginning was. My wife, who knows nothing about Greek mythology, had trouble following it and kept asking, "Who's that? What are they doing now? How are they related?" If you don't know anything of Greek mythology, I think the movie will be more enjoyable if you watch a 10-15 synopsis of the Iliad/Trojan War first.
3. Is Lupita Nyong'o a decent Helen of Troy? Honestly, I think she fit very well for this version of Helen. Importantly, she also plays Helen's twin sister. She probably has less than 5 minutes of total screen time in both roles combined. For those wanting Sydney Sweeney, she would have absolutely sucked in this role.
4. Is Elliot Page distracting as a Greek soldier? Yeah, I think Page was. I think Page was the only person in the movie who I would say was miscast. Not only is Page a foot shorter and a hundred pounds less than everyone else on the screen, Page also did a terrible job acting. Page probably only has three minutes of total screen time, but those are the worst scenes.
5. Was Page really mean to be Achilles and then changed to Sinon after bad press? Zero chance this happened. It would have meant rewriting the entire ending.
6. Do you need to see it on IMAX? I saw it on a regular screen. I'm sure IMAX is more impressive, but I don't think it's necessary.
7. Is the modern/American dialogue distracting? No, not all. I thought it worked well.
8. Do the Viking boats ruin the whole movie? I didn't even notice.
9. Are there audio issues? I had no problem understanding anyone speaking, but there were a couple of times where the "Inception boom" was too loud and uncomfortable. Doesn't ruin the movie, though.

The biggest question. Is it any good? Yeah, it's ****ing awesome.

So has anyone seen this? That Elliott Page is officially playing Sinon. The warrior that lied to the Trojans and manipulated them to get them to take the horse inside. He was condemned to the 8th circle of hell in Dantes inferno. Makes sense since she is lying about other things.

So am I right and Nolan cast Page because of the deceitfulness of the character and being a replacement "man" like what Pageau said?

Lots of folks online are gonna be absolutely LIVID when they see the RT audience reviews that were released tonight.

Seeing it tomorrow night, hopefully it's as good as nearly every normal human that has seen it is saying it is.

I hope it's good too. I hate the politics of it but I just want good/great movies in the theater. We get so few these days. I love going to the theater rather than home. Home is great for 2nd watches.
I hope I did not offend anybody with this post. If I did, please come see me at my address in my profile so we can talk.

The scene during the invasion of Troy towards the end of the film was the only impressive moment to me. It was in that absolute chaos where the sound and cinema paid off. I felt like I was right there in it. But that is 1 thing Nolan has always done well, capture moments of absolute chaos. What sucked is that it only lasted a couple of minutes.

This movie was pretty much 90 different things getting a couple of minutes each. 80 of which seemed like filler or as another poster mentioned, actors reading The Odyssey to you.

This was a movie I felt like could have been split into two. It seemed like they zoomed through the second half of the voyage.

all those are important no doubt...but the biggest obstacle for this thing will be the international BO (meant international in my post above not worldwide)....

nolan films historically have roughly a 2/3 split favoring the international BO....if this thing keeps to that then i dont see how it misses a billion...and man that's a hard one to guess on this thing....

last i checked current worldwide BO projections could swing anywhere at or around 200 million....if it does that then a billion is a problem....

if the domestic is around 100 million or better and the international can do 125 - 150 million for a combined rough estimate of 250 million worldwide BO....then i think theres a strong chance this one makes it....

very curious to see the numbers come monday / tuesday of next week.
last projections post prior to true numbers…domestics have fallen but only slightly…,showing 90 - 105 million domestically and 110
Million internationally.

If those hold then it's likely a billion is out…or at the very least gonna have way more of an uphill battle…

I'm sorry, but I was ASSURED many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many times over the past few weeks that, once "real people," "normies," and "Average Joes" saw the movie, the audience score would crater, the house of cards would fall, etc.

Yet, after opening night…

While, by my count here on the board, so far reactions are broken down accordingly…

6 POSITIVE

2 MIXED

1 NEGATIVE

I was also assured many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many times over the past few weeks that this movie would not be successful financially, no one is buying tickets for non-IMAX theaters, etc.

Yet, after opening night, a $100M dollar weekend is not just in play, but expected at this point (depending on how the World Cup Final might affect it), marking the third highest opening weekend of Nolan's career…

This was all, of course, after numerous people here were CONVINCED Elliot Page was playing Achilles, and *****ed endlessly about it for weeks, which turned out to be yet another a rage-baiting lie, this one especially ridiculous considering Page isn't even in the movie for more than a few minutes.

In other words, unfortunately more chud slop is likely on the way, seeing as that's all the haters have left at this point.

It seems highly likely the next 2 weeks of this thread in terms of "I told you so posts" from both extremes might be worse than the last month or two.

9 reviews isn't a statistical sample. 6 positives out of 9 isn't close to 96%. I don't have a dog in this fight, but claiming RT %s as proof that audiences will walk out of a theater with a positive view on the movie is misguided

I don't have a dog in the fight, but we all know that if the audience RT score was 50% people would be using that as proof it sucked as well.

Something I'll add just to throw in some extra .02....some folks that I listen to that are usually critical of stuff like this, still had their complaints. However, they also said they could easily see how folks that aren't purists to the original story and can take revisions up to a certain point...they are going to LOVE this film.

Also...this reviewer while critical of the first 2 hours (said it could have definitely been shortened for what they showed)...the said the 3rd act, which is also basically the last hour....is pure revenge and it is dang glorious....and if you can get through the first few hours it sounds like you are definitely in for a treat with how this film sticks the landing in the last hour.

To add on a bit more....they were also very positive regarding matt damon, anne hathaway, and tom holland...said all 3 of them give amazing performances and he specifically singled out a scene between 2 of these 3 (won't say which ones) that is an amazing scene and insanely well acted...

and again....this is coming from a person that's been critical of the casting choices from the start and has been reporting on this from a pessmestic approach from the start...

So take that for what it's worth
