I had issues with the audio with Dunkirk in the theater. It was much better at home.

Honestly, I guess I'm getting old because several times in the last few years in the movies I've been like "damn, I want to be immersed but I don't want hearing damage. Turn it the **** down!"

I've started taking concert earbuds to movie theaters just in case. My hearing is already not great. I don't need it to get worse

To be clear, I'm not doubting that it's a real issue/critique people have, I'm just more fascinated that it seems to vary so much for different people.

You wouldn't have heard it until now because almost all of the "reviews" have just been marketing. We have a little honesty trickling in.

Dunkirk had an absolutely horrible audio mix. I literaly had no idea in the theater what anybody was saying. I had to watch it again at home with closed captions on.

Editor: OK this fighter pilot scene is looking great.
Nolan: *Turns up the bass and engine noises*
Editor: But...sir...does the audience need to know what Hardy is saying over radio?
Nolan: No.
Editor: But in the script is says that he go--

Dude, you are just wrong about this, but I don't think there is any convincing you. As someone who follows movies and critics closely, there is a wide swath of critics who usually have very different takes from the consensus who are enjoying the movie. Does this mean general audiences will? Only time will tell, but it is something to note. You don't have to believe me about that, it doesn't hurt my feelings, its just funny that you are making these assertions when anyone who has been paying attention to movies and critics can see you don't know what you are talking about. You don't have to agree with these critics or like their take on movies, but to say they are Hollywood shills or bandwagoning, or whatever is just false.

My friend actually texted me the Ehrlich tweet saying "this dude doesn't like anything, so now im really excited".

Also, if you think people aren't incentivized to post negative reviews for the movie, given how controversial the movies has been already site unseen, then I don't know if you know how the internet works. A negative review, right now, is definitely going to increase someones profile/interaction/etc. and get them more attention/followers/etc.

Ehrlich hates everything so much there is 1 negative review by him in the last 11 he did....and that one he gave a C+

For me, the top 9 are all good to great and are just ranked by my level of enjoyment. The Dark Knight Rises is just very mid, for me. Tenet was Nolan disappearing up his own ass. Maybe one day I'll try it again and end up liking it, but I remember being extremely disappointed in the entire movie despite actually liking Robert Pattinson's performance. This performance and his performance in The Lighthouse are what made me excited to see him as Batman.

Yes...because the reviews he wrote in the last month definitely encapsulate his entire career as a critic....

Some of us have known who he is and have been reading his reviews for years, and use that context in our summary of him and our interpretation of his reviews. But again, doesn't hurt my feelings if you don't believe me, it just shows that you don't know what you are talking about when it comes to some of these critics. This is my point.

Also, it doesn't matter. I almost never agree with him, so I'm not trying to stand up for him as some cinematic opinion I hold in high regard. You guys are just mischaracterizing him and others and its baffling.

I'm excited to see if personally, but I'll decide if it's good after I see it.

Kinda seems like both to me. Lot of people really hoping this will flop, and a lot of other people spending a lot of energy trying to show how objectively and universally awesome this movie will be.

I remember when Armond White gave the only negative review to Toy Story 3 which would have given the movie the record for most reviews on RT without a negative review.

I for one am hoping it's a great film. I've just had plenty of personal reasons to be skeptical. But, I've wanted this project to take shape with some top tier director for well before it was announced. I just hope Nolan and co do it justice.

I've been gone from thread for 6 days but I'm glad it's still going. Very entertaining; maybe even more than the actual movie of which I have IMAX tickets for this weekend. I would say about 35% of my showing was purchased when I bought tickets a couple of days ago.

I am as well but frankly this always a concern of mine now. Sound mixing has generally gotten worse across the board over the years and it's very frustrating.

As a Greek, we'll claim Charlize Theron and Anne Hathaway as legit. The rest of them are all products of Anti-Greek racism.

Yep. I'm 50 now and I realize my hearing ain't what it used to be, but the fact is I have to watch most modern movies/shows with CC turned on meanwhile I can turn on a movie made prior to ~2010 and understand the dialogue perfectly.

I apologize for using race too broadly. It clearly confused you and made it impossible to understand what my argument was, which I can only assume is why you found it so disingenuous that you felt the need to bring it up 5 days later.

Adding my repeated disclaimer that I hope this movie is awesome. That being said, if there was anything someone like Christopher Nolan might ever fail at...it would likely be at something that is a bit out of his wheelhouse. He clearly excels at modern psychological thrillers and intelligent action movies.

I get that he has wanted to do this project for a long time, but, it's pretty far removed from the types of movies he has always churned out. In the grand scheme of things, that concerns me more than a couple of casting decisions. Although nothing can convince me Elliot Page and Helen of Troy weren't DEI hires of sorts (unless he's going for modern edgy Romeo and Juliet vibes...which doesn't appear to be the case from the trailer).

If you want to take on a risky project and go balls to the wall in a direction you've never taken before, and be basically immune from criticism from 95% of mainstream critics...there is a way.

Why can't it be he just took a big swing and made the movie HE wanted to make? Just because you don't like the choices he made, that doesn't mean he is trying to force an agenda down your throat. Everything you don't like isn't out to get you. Sometimes its just something you don't like.

And I'm not sure if you know, but Nolan is basically critic proof at this point. I don't think he is concerning himself with how critics receive his movies. He's always been more concerned with how the audience receives it. Which is why people go see his movies. Only with this film, because he has made choices you don't like, do people like you start painting him as a critics/awards chaser. Thats not his brand, has never been his brand. But go ahead and keep banging the drum I guess.

Ditto. There was actually a thread on here a few years ago on this topic. I'm sure someone can find it. It's an interesting read.

Sound mixing has legitimately degraded over the years, and I recall one of the primary reasons being the advent of streaming and sound people having to account for more mediums which then dilutes the quality of sound in film.

Makes blu-rays all that more valuable, IMO, if you have a quality sound system at home.
