Knowing how Nolan is something like this would have been meticulously researched, this wouldn't have been a mistake.

Makes me really curious to see and hear after the fact why he's made some of the choices he's made.

Meticulous research is well appreciated, but when you limit yourself by wanting to use practical effects and sets no matter what, then that's how you get this boat. Or go back to Dunkirk - the Spitfires were accurate for 1940, but the Messerschmitts were not. The Messerschmitts were not German at all, they were Spanish-built after the war. But those tend to be the only available Messerschmitts that still fly, so in adhering to practical over CGI or miniatures, it was the only option. Although he did use a big RC aircraft to depict the Heinkel bomber; I don't believe any of those remain in flying condition, and again, there was a Spanish-built version used in movies like Patton and Battle of Britain that crashed several years ago.

Yeah, but he's not.

As as much as we'll probably hear this week about the "no CGI" there will be hundreds if not thousands of CG shots in this movie.

Did he just HAVE to use a real ship so he went with this one? Maybe, but it seems like a stretch that this was the only possible option available to do that.

I'm sure it's going to be a good movie in the entertainment sense, but that ship inaccuracy alone is just infuriating...and I'm sure just one of many inaccuracies. is it too much to ask to stay true to period (unless you're going to go all-in futuristic adaptation)?

lol 'infuriating?' Some of y'all need to take a step back. It's a movie adaptation of a fictional mythological tale. JFC.

What is CGI and what is not matters. Using CGI to enhance what is in the frame already is what Nolan does.

Will there be tons of CGI shots in the movie, sure. But a CGI boat means building a set for the boat, or building some weird floating thing for the actors to stand on and then putting CGI of the boat in later. It really limits what you can do with your shots. With a real boat, they can do full pans or go wide or film all around it without thinking of how they are going to add in the details later. Thats very different then putting in a CGI whirlpool later to a shot that they have.

Same for the cyclops. Apparently they used a giant puppet when filming and filmed in a real cave. Will there be CGI shots in that? For sure. But the scale and the environment were in camera, not added later.

Bro, it's a ****ing blatant Viking ship. It's not just an ancient ship with some Nordic elements. It's a full on textbook Viking ship.

It's ok that you don't give a ****, but some of us do…and that's ok.

On a somewhat related note one of the best sailing ships used in a movie HMS Surprise sits rotting in San Diego and will likely not survive. Such a shame, the ship was one of the stars of the movie as much as Russel Crowe.

To the casual observer, no one will give a damn about the accuracy of how 'antiquated' this ship is. It's not like it's a 17th century schooner with cannons and some fop ******* wearing petticoat bloomers and a powdered wig with a blunderbuss leading the crew.

lol you do you but keeping score of 'inaccuracies' of a movie based on the FICTITIOUS HISTORY OF THIS PLANET seems like a waste of emotional health. Like, just skip the movie. It's clearly not for you if you're looking for some 'true ancient greek' portrayal of life (that also happens to have monsters and gods).

It actually doesn't matter most of the time, generally speaking an audience can't tell when it's done well.

I don't mean to "well actually" you here, but I studied CG animation for half a decade. I'm well aware of what can and can't be done. And if anything using a real boat actually limits what you can do, you have to work around rigs, equipment, etc. You can do literally anything digitally.

I would bet any amount of money that there will be full digital shots of things like the boat used and maybe even some on boat shots, it'll be necessary for some shots and simply easier in other cases. For all we hear of Nolan's do it all practical mantra, there's tons of digital doubles and vehicle replacements in films like The Dark Knight. It makes for great sound bites, but we can pull up the "we're only using real planes" from Top Gun, "all the cars are real" from Ford vs Ferarri, or dozens of other clips for reference.

In any case I'm simply saying that, even if the desire was to use a real boat, there have to have been more options than this specific viking ship.

I'll do me and not skip it. but, I'll say....the brilliance of greek mythology is that it intertwined real history and mythology so seamlessly. It wasn't pure fairytale. that's why the historic nature of this film is important to a lot of us (as it is to much of the world as evidenced). It's not a project to just take on and throw a bunch of silliness in. It's Homer ffs. It's some of the most globally recognized Greek literature in history.

again, it's fine that you don't care, but the refusal to accept that other people do is a bit closed-minded.

We are arguing the same thing?

Using a real boat limits how you can shoot for sure, because of the actual boat. The audience can feel that. You can tell when there were no limits on the camera. If you are adding CGI to something real, it feels different.

My point is you can go wide and have everyone on the boat, and pan around or move the camera around and it feels real, because it is.

Ya but dude, Homer may not have actually even existed. This whole thing is a Frankenstein of oral tradition that was rooted in ancient religion and then morphed into something else over time. You're actually being close minded by believing this story is confined to 1 theme, style, or context. If he was making historical drama based on events and people that actually existed, then sure but this whole thing is fantasy. It's myth. It's entertainment. Go be entertained or mark your spreadsheet of things you'd do differently that make you mad.

You're arguing just a vehemently as he is about a "fictional mythological tale".

It's hilarious to see all these posters trying to act like they're better than others when they are ****-flinging just as much as anyone else, just from an opposite opinion. You're still taking time out of your life to go to an internet forum to have a back-and-forth argument, with someone you don't know, about a movie being made about a fictional mythological tale. You aren't as high and mighty as you've deluded yourself into being.

Per that Twitter post, "A sailing reconstruction of a Mycenaean warship already exists: the Argo, 50 oars, built in Volos, Greece."

Here is the Argo for reference:

I think the Viking one looks cooler, Nolan chose correctly.

agreed, but the insanity of sailing the open seas back then in a glorified pine box is part of the mystique behind these ancient adventures

I have determined I should be taking this story as seriously as I take One Piece. This is just an anime-like adaptation of the original myth. This has not been the case for any other Nolan film, but I guess he is deviating from this standard practice.

If you have been reading the daily tea leaves since about 2012 or so, it all boils down to this. Don't let people gaslight you into thinking your crazy or "racist" for noticing it. My non-white wife notices it all on her own...especially with her parents coming from a homogeneous country, one that would be considered insanely racist if comprised by white people.

Just look at what's happening in Western Europe...and even here, albeit to a lesser degree since we are so gigantic. They ONLY want predominantly white societies overhauled/replaced. But it's beautiful for India, Korea, Japan, African nations, and many other black and brown countries to be racially or ethnically homogeneous and they should always remain that way.

Why are you so bothered that he cares? I mean, its not like you made one simple retort to his original post. You continue to rebut him. But to try to prove what? If he wants to care about the historical accuracy for the time period of the myth, what is it to you? We get it, you don't care so you're cool, whatever.

Tickets purchased months ago. My youngest travels all over to see IMAX 70MM. Even has spent time in projection room with more than one projectionist. He is a Jet pilot and flew with the pilot that does most of the aerial flying for Nolan's 70MM productions…including this one in the Mediterranean . He will watch it three more times in other 70MM theatres. It's great to spend time with your adult children on their passions.

And comparing the Viking ship used in the film to the rendering of the Pytheas from earlier, they're honestly waaaay closer than I expected and using that ship for filming now makes a whole lot of sense.

96% of the audience is going to have no idea.
