Can we all just regroup here after we've seen the film. If it sucks Tenet bad so be it. Otherwise who the hell cares if it's a great movie.

We have temporarily locked this thread. Since it is Memorial Day weekend, the lock will be brief, users should be able to discuss the movies being released this summer. However, recent activity in this thread has gone well beyond discussing the film itself.

Please rein in the trolling, ad hominem attacks, thread derailing, and disrespectful behavior. We understand there is a gray area regarding this film's casting and the overlap between culture and politics. The topics are being covered by news and industry publications, so it makes sense for it to be discussed.

We also recognize that users will have strong feelings about a film adaptation of a 2,700-year-old literary work that is a cornerstone of the Western canon. While we are not preventing that conversation, if you are unable to discuss the subject without personally attacking other users, trolling, thread derailing, or disrespectful comments, please refrain from posting.

If your commentary is limited strictly to casting choices and industry politics, this is not the appropriate forum. There is another forum on the platform dedicated to those types of discussions exclusively. This forum is for discussing the movie itself, and the "politics of casting" should not be the dominant subject here, regardless of the source material.

You can expect an unlock later on today.

Thank you.

I really hope posters abide by those very reasonable guidelines. The story, the lessons, of the work are universal and global, and we need to keep that in mind IMO.

At the risk of talking about the actual film, I watched the trailer on Imax last night, and I think what's actually bugging me is that Matt Damon seems little boring for the main role. I really like him and have seen loads of his movies, but it feels like Odysseus should be an extremely emotional role. Damon seems to excel at charm, earnestness, and humor. I think Odysseus should be more haggard and sinewy looking given the nature of the journey.

I'm not sure who I would have cast instead. Christian Bale could do the acting, but he's such a Nolan guy it would be hard to detach him from his Batman character. A performance in line with Ethan Hawke in the Northman is maybe what I'm thinking about.

Tom Holland's casting also feels like a distraction, although that might just be that I've never seen him in anything but Spiderman. He's a great Peter Parker, but I have no idea if he can do anything else.

I think the roles I'm most excited to see at Pattison as Antinous and Charlize Theron as Calypso.

Also if you guys want to fly into a rage again, the casting list says there's a Korean guy named Wil Yun Lee in the cast as another of Odysseus's crew members, paying homage to the long-standing ancient alliance between Greece and Korea that existed in those days.

Jon Hamm as Odysseus?

I thought Damon did a good job going against type in The Last Duel.

I think I would have preferred an unknown, or someone less known like Bale was when he became Batman in 2005. he was 31 then. I know he had been in American Psycho, but I'm not sure I had seen him in anything but Newsies when he was a kid and Reign of Fire a that point.

31 is too young for Odysseus since he has a grown son, and I just don't know enough about today's actors to suggest some lesser known guy in his mid 40s to mid 50s. But definitely a less recognizable face might have been a better choice.

I do love Jon Hamm immensely in "Your Friends and Neighbors" on Apple +. i discovered it about a month ago; it is fantastic, I was surprised TexAgs didn't have a thread about it. Very good look at divorce and loss and starting over; albeit in the context of being really rich.

I loved the unknown actor quality of Band of Brothers.

If you saw Empire of the Sun in 1987, then you had seen Christian Bale. Albeit as a child actor.

Just saw a clip from an appearance Quentin Tarantino made on a podcast where called Black Hawk Down the best movie of the 21st century so far. His 1 complaint was there are too many Brits in it playing Americans. Found that funny in the context this thread has gone down.

They would have had to go beyond Homer for him to die.

I now just assume almost any actor I see is Brit or Australian. I'm continually surprised when I hear an actor speak IRL only to find this out.

I'll try to get this back on the initial off track…

So not only have they miscast this movie, the most miscast actress hasn't even heard of the Odyssey. The most well known Greek epic of all time. How does a theatre kid not even know the name of the classics?

I feel like there's a version of Jim Caviezel from 20 years ago that could been incredible as Odysseus.
