I will have to give it another watch. I haven't seen it in years. I remember being excited to watch it, but just felt something was missing.

As for Coen Bros give Raising Arizona or Fargo any day.

Little fun fact I just learned an hour ago:

The soundtrack to this film was the last bluegrass album to hit number 1 on the charts until Billy's newest release "Highway Prayers" did so this month.

That is one of my favorite movies and 1 of my father's as well. He died in 2002 about a month before my wife and I were married.

It was a difficult time, obviously, and after the funeral I was spending time in his shop sitting in his chair and I turned on the radio on the local country music station, and "A man of constant sorrow" came on.

It felt like a message from my dad and I just sat and bawled. It's still a very emotional connection for me.

Because Dapper Dan went out of business. Wouldn't be a film without it.

If anyone is curious to know how that went last night, it was nothing short of incredible in my very unbiased opinion. Great recap and lots of video here. Even got a guest appearance from T Bone Burnett performing Johnny Cash "When the Man Comes Around".

Now I can't wait to watch this movie again with a totally different perspective. And only Billy could throw Black Sabbath and Zeppelin into an O Brother, Where Art Thou themed show flawlessly.

so is this concert being live streamed?
Yes starting at 7 pm central on nugs.net. Free for monthly subscribers but you can also do a free 7 day trial and cancel. Will be well worth tuning into, especially if you like this movie. Here's a description of tonight as it will be featuring a full ensemble of others:

Quote:

Billy's weekend of festivities gets started with tonight's "O Billy, Where Art Thou?" theatrical stage adaptation, featuring actor Tim Blake Nelson, plus Jerry Douglas, Sierra Hull, Duane Trucks, Cris Jacobs, Lindsay Lou, and more.

And now I prepare to get totally flamed. I hate to say it but I didn't care for this film at all. I think much of it has to do with the fact that I went into it with the totally wrong mind frame.

For whatever reason I always assumed it was a serious drama. So I was completely thrown off that I was suddenly watching some sort of avant garde type comedy, although the fact that it's a Coen brothers movie should have tipped me off. So I found myself just totally perplexed and getting annoyed by many of the characters not really understanding what the hell I was watching.

But that's on me and I'm sure I'll give it another shot one day with a different attitude going in after tonight's performance.

On the other hand, the music in it is absolutely fantastic as everyone pointed out and I have listened to the soundtrack twice now and love every bit of it and can't wait to hear them play the tunes off of it tonight. It sounds tailor made for them and I can see why they chose it.

Also, I believe someone mentioned earlier that it won an Academy Award for sound and I can see why. I don't recall ever hearing my soundbar coming through so clear and loud that I thought it was going to shatter the windows. Absolute A+ on that front and award well deserved.

All that said, still looking forward to a killer show tonight as Billy and company do everything at an extremely high level, especially on Halloween.

I think it is very much a grows on you kind of movie. I can't say that I disliked it on the first watch. I definitely enjoyed it, but likewise, I definitely thought it was odd and bizarre and certainly felt unsure about what I was even watching half of the time.

I would say it was probably a few re-watches after that before it really started to gravitate with me and become a part of my quotable lexicon. Of course that was back in the days when you were just on cable, and I would stop down and watch some of it again If I saw that it was on.

The music was a definite hook for me as well though. And over time, I started to see the actors in other roles, and that reminded me of this movie too. I literally cannot see Tim Blake Nelson in any other movie without thinking about his character in this. And he kills me comedically.

The story also grew on me, though, with the realization of the tie in to the odyssey and Homer and all of that. Certainly on first view a lot of that wasn't blatant.

Anyway, maybe it will grow on you overtime too since you know what it is now.

PS - I have found that almost universally men love this movie and women loath it.

My wife despises it and groans every time she sees I have it on. It's one of those movies for me that if it is on I will definitely tune it in for a while. And I could probably quote 90% of the dialogue easily. Must have seen it 200 times by now at least in parts.

If it's on, I'm watching it. Absolutely love it and like everyone else has shown, full of hilarious quotes. It's one that you can pick new things up every time you watch it.

Watched it the first time and didn't get it. Had no idea what to expect, and I'm not sure I even knew it was a Coen film.

Somehow I decided to give it another shot, and it is now in my all-time top 10.

And it's in my wife's and my (together) top 3. She doesn't quote movies much, but she quotes this one.

Well, ain't it a small world, spiritually speaking?

Pete, the personal rancor reflected in that remark I don't intend to dignify with comment.
