One hell of a songwriter. I think it says a lot about the depth of someone's songwriting prowess when you hear someone say, "Wow, I did not know he wrote that." I think that happens frequently with Kristofferson's work. He leaves an indelible mark on American music.
I loved him in the Blade movies.
Just based on when I was born, my first experience with him was in the Blade films. The music and older movies came with time. Dude lived one helluva life. Military brat, Rhodes scholar, Oxford, golden gloves boxer, Army Ranger, helicopter pilot, janitor, singer-songwriter, actor. Just a legend who got so much out of life.

Any fan of Kris Kristofferson knew this day was coming sooner than later, but this is still a gut punch.
Wrote some great songs and lived a hell of a life. I never thought he was much of an actual singer and prefer most any song by an artist that covered him over his original version. But he had some gems that he wrote and sang that no one could improve on.
"To Beat the Devil" and "Casey's Last Ride" are my two favorite that he wrote and sang. We played "Why Me Lord" at my dad's funeral because that was one of his favorite songs.

Great to read some of this stuff and I always respected him highly.
I actually met him once in about 1978 or 1979 - in a very random and yet fitting way.
I had a friend in junior high with the last name of Kirschenbauer and we had hung out many times. I was living in Kansas at the time on the Ft. Leavenworth military base. One day as I recall over the winter holiday break I was over at his house and we had been playing outside building a snow fort or having a snowball fight or something. We went inside and were warming up and getting a snack when this disheveled scraggly guy in sweat pants and a t-shirt walked in the room where we were watching TV and said hello. I immediately recognized him as I had seen the movie Convoy and probably seen him in other things as well.
I looked at my friend doing a double take and he said "Oh hey this is my uncle Kris." I was just frozen and dumbfounded really. But I managed to say hello and that was pretty much it. He was just hanging around with them and visiting for the holidays. My friend had never mentioned having any famous relative and he was on this podunk military base and staying in regular quarters with them. Different era but traveled alone I guess and certainly no fanfare or security. Turns out his mom Karen was Kris's sister. Apparently they were all military families. Well anyway he was cool and chatted with us a while and showed genuine interest in my friends activities and life. Pretty cool uncle i guess.
Anyway that was it. Just saw him that one day and we never talked about him again. Just seemed like a normal dude around them.
