My own:
50s - oldies
60s-early 80s - classic
80s-early 90s - hair band but some of this can be lumped with classic

However you lump those, grunge was definitely the end.
What do you call the post grunge bands like 311?

Are the Sex Pistols considered classic rock? What about the Black Crowes? I think classic rock can also be a sound and not a time period.

Sex Pistols were punk.

There were some post grunge bands that I liked, at least a few albums
Black Keys
The Killers
Kings of Leon
Oasis
Etc

To be clear, I don't think rock ended. Some have classic sound, but when I consider true classic rock, to me the time period is part of it.

Anything from 1965 to up to the hair bands is classic rock to me.

Pretty much how I define it.
Same. Classic rock had that certain sound/vibe. Which definitely went poof with hair bands.

What's interesting is categorizing bands that crossed the "timeline", like Aerosmith. Certainly Dream On, etc. are considered classic rock, but Love in an Elevator not so much.
Aerosmith was classic rock then they went on a hiatus. Then the came back with the album Dude looks like a lady and they became a hair band.

what about Van Halen? Would 1984 be considered classic rock? All albums before that I think are.
Eddie playing the synthesizer screams "not classic rock"

Not all the songs on that album are synthesizer. Nor are all the later songs by Van Halen.

I think of the Black Crowes as classic rock. They basically sound like a 70s rock band. The Sex Pistols are punk, along with The Clash and The Ramones.

"Dream On" Aerosmith = classic rock
"Walk this Way" = not classic rock (but still awesome)

Early classic rock is the Stones's first albums, Cream, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Hendrix.
Middle classic rock is Boston, Doobie Bros., Steve Miller, etc.
Late classic rock is young Van Halen, ACDC.

Hair bands, Metallica, grunge, GnR are not classic rock.
Why would you say "Walk this Way" is not classic rock? Or are you only referring to the Run DMC collab?
Sorry, yes, I was referring to the collab. Great mashup. Not classic rock.

This.

The exception is music by bands who started in the '60's and 70's but continued with their style into the 80's (ZZ Top, Boston, Kansas, etc). Hard stop on all of it at midnight New Year's Eve, 1989.

Fun fact: A car that is 25+ years old but less than 50 qualifies for a classic car license plate. Anything older would be an "antique" car (unless it qualifies as a "vintage" care from before 1930).

If you applied that same designation to music:

Classic Rock:

Antique Rock:

Vintage Rock:

I put Classic Rock in a time frame loosely bounded by the late 1960s Hendrix/Doors/Summer of Love, to the early 1980s when Motley Crue/Quiet Riot/Dokken hit the scene.

My Classic Rock definition includes no synthesizers, no distortion pedal guitar solo led songs and no screaming vocals except for Robert Plant and Steven Tyler.

In the old days, Z102 in Austin had a formula that included lots of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I include Boston in the Classic Rock category even though that breaks my distortion pedal rule.

Some bands like The Scorpions and Rush will have earlier albums that I'd include in Classic Rock and later albums that I wouldn't. Fly By Night - sure, Signals, no way.

And as far as guitar solo led music that I'd put squarely in the Classic Rock category - Ted Nugent.

Somebody was passing around a vicious crapper rumor that the corps turds were upset about a "Big 10 Inch", in quad, on The Quad, once upon a time....

Just something I heard, back in the day. And that might've passed the test for "classic rock".

For a very simple answer I say anything in the rock genre made between the Stones first album and Led Zeppelin's last (not counting Coda)

I would define it as rock post Beatles but before Thriller.
I define it that way because until that point, pop and rock were basically one genre as strange as that is. It split after that, Jackson redefined what a pop hit was.. You got the hair bands that tried to be just pop enough to get airplay in response, but it's a very different sound. Hotel California and Home Sweet Home (which basically dominated the top of the mtv charts for forever) are different universes of music. And record sales back that up,

What's fascinating to me is that the love of classic rock is largely retrospective. Look at what the first few eagles albums did sales wise, they weren't anything like what the eagles would later become for instance. And now the greatest hits from those records is one of the best selling albums of all time. I think the nostalgia for that sound comes from the fact that it had depth and heart, and themes across albums too. It wasn't a marketing check box to sell records. And with all the artificial help musicians get now with their sound, it was real.

I don't think there is any real definition of what iclassic rock is and it's probably different for every person. Growing up, I always thought of classic rock as mid 60s to early 80s with the rise of hair bands being the stopping point.

The overlap of classic rock and cars from the late 60's just feels so right.

Back in Black sounds so much better when combined with the rumble of a 454 Chevelle SS.

I guess it depends on if it was a rerun or not.
Or, if there's another actors' or writers' strike.
Or, more importantly, if the statute of limitations has run out yet. Or not.
Or, if not, then if Mowdy Ag and I suddenly develop severe cases of dementia and/or amnesia.

Oh, and when in doubt, don't forget that I am also an Inspector Clouseau fan. I'll never forget his explaining to his assistant, Hercule, how important the "facts" are in A Shot In The Dark. So, I'm glad you raised the question of "before or after the fact". Either way, I'm afraid the "facts" point to poor Hot Rocks taking the blame for the deed that so infuriated the poor corps turds. The facts seem to point to him being left "holding the bag, er speaker." By this analysis, it appears that Mowdy Ag is in the clear.

It's one of the best things about the show Supernatural.

Sam and Dean cruising around in a late '60s car cranking classic rock.

Introducing themselves as fake FBI agents "Page and Plant" or "Lee and Lifeson".

Nice little additions to the script.
