"10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides, before the universe knew them as the Bene Gesserit..."

No Villeneuve, but the quality still looks pretty damn impressive...

I'm in. And somehow the cinematography looks on par with the movies.

Getting HOTD, without the dragons.

10,000 years in the past …… with identical technology and political systems.

Oh and I will definitely watch.

Looks interesting, I hope they do Mile Teg proud with this one. Please just don't make the heroines stoic and masculine(the overdone strong-woman trope of the last decade). The Bene Gesserit Frank's books are great examples on how to write female characters. Stick to the formula.

If it does pull from any books it's the son's books(Brian Herbert). Frank never wrote any of the prequels.

I think that was 10,000 years after, not before

I get this complaint, but in this particular universe I think it's explained by the fact that AI had been outlawed for millennia.

Yikes. Brian Herbert fan fiction.

Correct I was only saying that because I liked the book character and he was Bene Gesserit. If I recall he's 5000 years after Paul. 3500 years of Leto II + 1500 year Scattering.

If you ban AI & higher computing, technology will no doubt get to a certain point & then stagnate.
(Honestly at this point if the tech people never made a new Iphone or bigger TV I'd survive )

In terms of political systems, there are only so many ways to govern. Plus it is highly plausible that other systems of governments popped up here & there in the intervening years 10K years between this show & the events of Dune.

I just don't get the hate of Brian Herbert's prequels. No, they do not approach the intellectualness of his dad's stuff, but what could?

I read most of them back in the day and thought they were mostly fun sci-fi.

And if this is 10k years in the past then it's probably before the Butlerian Jihad happened.

Let us all hope they can finish it as well as they start it, if the start is as good as the movies.

No, it's MAX because their dumbass CMO thinks there is more equity in the Cinemax name than the HBO name.

LOL.

Sorry, I just think that decision is mind-blowingly stupid and can't help but call it out.

It's either right before it or right after it. The Butlerian Jihad was always claimed "over 10,000 " years ago. Which is what got rid of AI.

Yep. Considering the current rise of AI in real life I can't imagine they won't take advantage of that plot line here.

Watched the trailer last night and it was more intriguing than I previously thought so I'll walk back my hesitation and contrite statements til I do watch it. I am still a little leery since Frank's son was involved, but we'll see. And the nerd in me still can't buy the technology stagnating for 10000 years due to the AI and Butlerian Jihad.

Spoiler tag due to the JV movies not really broaching this topic, or maybe it was I don't recall; better safe than sorry.

And hard to unsee the head Bene Gesserit as the blind love interest of Francis Dollarhyde in Red Dragon.

Reminder that this debuts Sunday night, with six episodes over the next six weeks.

No way it holds a candle to the movies, but hopefully it's decent enough.

Did you watch Game of Thrones? They've been stuck with Middle Ages-tech for 10,000 years which is much, much worse.

The empire was really trying to advance things. The rebellion was a bit of a show stopper in many ways

I can appreciate this point of view. The novel God Emperor of Dune is out there for sure but Frank Herbert does very well with this book in my opinion. Herbert really pigeonholed himself with the first three Dune novels since he created an all powerful super-being. Not a whole lot of places to go with Paul Atreides unless it was the Kwisatz Haderach ripping into a multiverse or something which is the overdone trope all the rage with film studios today.

The final two are superb sci-fi novels that can be read apart from the first four books. They stand alone fairly well.

So Desmond has served twelve tours on Arrakis but his eyes haven't turned blue? This isn't a gotcha question just a bit of confusion from someone who hasn't read the entire series but I remember Dr. Kynes stating that his eyes changed due his length of time on Arrakis in service of the Emperor.

I mean, it's in the canon at least but…

Seriously, they took a much loved franchise, created a spin-off show about a cabal of women with special metaphysical powers, and even used the word acolyte twice? How could they not have dubbed another word in after the other debacle?

That said, it was actually pretty decent.

it depends on length of time there as well as amount of exposure to spice.

it is possible to live there for years and not have blue eyes if you stay in the palaces and other facilities for the most part, or wear masks and suits when outside of those areas.

Opening into narration sounded really interesting why aren't we getting that story? I think I would have preferred the opening narration story to this story so far.

The Reckoning they are talking about "Tiran arafel" comes from the Jewish word Arafel that means fog. In God Emperor of Dune it is used to mean apocalypse

This first episode was mainly setting up a ton of characters, maybe too many. I think it could have used more focus on one thing.
