I haven't heard a thing about this season up until now. Gotta go back and rewatch end of last season

Currently in the middle of season 3 and loving it.

Before Only Murders, I couldn't stand Martin Short. My view of him has completely 180'd, though, and now I love just about everything he does. Even a lot of his old stuff that I used to hate.

Interesting first episode.

The creators/writers seem to enjoy the ability to break out of "the building" as evidenced by last seasons theater deep dive and now LA/Hollywood studios and landmarks including a very spike lee esque film sequence on set.

Was an interesting choice to literally remove the body especially after so much foreshadowing of dead bodies in the building etc.

Certainly a lot of references to the number 4 that I noticed. Is that simply for season 4 or something else?

Great to have this show back. Tons of inside jokes. I especially liked the one about it being creepy that Selina Gomez hangs out with two old guys.

I enjoyed the actor/cameo guest spots. Eva Longoria (49) trying to claim she and Selena (32) are basically the same age was funny too. Zach G. is a hit or miss for me depending what he is in but I liked him here. Very angrily self aware. Need to use Eugene Levy more if they go to LA again. I can see something with mistaken identity between him, Charles, and Bakula and even Sazz of course if she is alive???? I'm not convinced she is dead despite what they found at the end of the episode - although it is "only murders in the building" so....

She's so ****ing dead, dude. She's 4 dead, okay…

I just hope we still get a good dose of Jane Lynch. I love her as Sazz

I really liked this episode. Jane Lynch is great. I have a feeling that's all we'll really see of her, but I am hoping that Brazzos continues to have visions of her. They are great together.

I assumed they booked it back to Charles after putting some of the pieces together. But yeah, they did kinda skip that.

Totally agree on your first point, one of my favorite shows on tv that's just so consistently great. I love how Jan has gone from cute and quirky to full on psychopath.

Totally, she's so good in this role. I lost track of how many f-bombs she muttered after "I'd like to report a murder".

By the way - not that I think anything will come of it in this show but due to my (unnatural) interest in other real world murders I know that (supposedly) everything that was said from the time they called 911 is recorded even before someone answers and it records until disconnected. Not that it might come into play here but they could hear everything Charles and the other said while on hold as well as Jan when she was present.

My first thought was that was why the cops suddenly showed up - but that was shown to have been due to Jans escape.

So besides noticing the OH HELL as upside down numbers I have a few other thoughts on things they found at Sazz place related to what we know.

We saw HELGA on a note but I think that might be an acronym as it is all caps.
We saw notes about the west side of the Arconia and Dudenoff.

I think it is possible Sazz was the one renting the unit listed as Dudenoff and that some moniker for her. I think she was using it to keep an eye on Charles given whatever threat she knew about. And I think she had enlisted Pink Eye Guy and the family and played the game of OH HELL with them and provided them with that code to open the apartment as needed.

They did not yet know Sazz was (presumably) shot and killed and probably were prepped to cover for her in case the gang showed up. The mom Inez kicked Ana when the name Dudenoff came up.

Sazz has previously mentioned hearing stuff on a ham radio (last season she said she had heard people wished it was Charles and not Ben that died for example) and Pink Eye Guy had one and there were walkie talkies too. Then there is the ham in the shower and the live pig/ham in the apartment tub. The tinsel in there showed the Christmas guy also probably was in there some time.

I think those are red herrings though - I think they were helping watch Charles is all. And the shot really had to come from a floor lower for the angle to be correct to hit her in the chest.

I still don't think she is dead - rule of thumb: no body = no death in mysteries. But she is in hiding as part of ferreting out the killers or being held.

Definitely feel like the identity thing will come into play with Sazz/Charles/Levy/Bakula mistaken identity and I notice that the producer Bev Melon could not tell for example that the twins were not identical twins. Then there is the writer and the fly on the wall stuff with him and the movie. So I'm still suspicious of someone from the movie productin drew.

Great episode. More great cameos, had heart mixed with irony, laughter and intrigue. And just enough camp.

Jan is so good though, hope there's more of her.

Anyone notice them finding tinsel by the window? I think they put that in there to get us talking about it, not because it has to do with the murder. As if the Christmas all year guy did it… not!

I'm calling my shot now: it was all of the westies; they were sharing the keypad locked apartment…

Wasn't as big a fan of this week, the real life celebs kind ruined the vibe.
But the perfect strangers call backs were great.

I actually enjoyed it quite a bit.

Zach G. was hysterical in the various moods he went through with Oliver and how it was all a put on in the end. The Perfect Strangers-esque montage was awesome. Eva did not annoy me as much this time and actually the entire christmas guy scene was pretty funny the way it played out. Levy was perfect of course and nailed his scenes he is so charles anyway. After the first episode I assumed any parts with the hollywood types would be agonizing but I actually enjoyed them quite a bit. And to see the expressions of our 3 mains characters being dissected was pretty well done and Howards defense of Oliver was brilliant.

And Da'vine Joy Randolph gave us her usual amazing but brief appearance.

As for the case....man this season is making a lot more headway in the case quicker than season 3 which seemed to drag endlessly until the last episode. No filler just cut to the chase. I mean the musical itself was a huge time kill last season and the way these stars were involved in moving the investigation forward is a huge improvement.

I assume the woman in the picture scratched out was Sazz - who befriended the westies - but it could be Helga I suppose. Speaking of that I assume Helga was the voice on the ham radio with the dire warning.

FYI the christmas guys names written on his torso matched the weird 3s and Es on the notes on Sazz desk. But I still think all of the stuff about the westies is a red herring anyway. A distraction from the actual murderer.

The pig will play some role here leading to a clue - maybe something buried in the courtyard of the Arconia and the pig sniffs it out. I think Dudenoff is actually dead and buried there and westies have been using his apartment including Sazz to watch Charles.

Too many reference to Perfect Strangers makes me think its a clue too.

Longshot theory since we have not even seen her yet but some little part of me somehow thinks Cinda Canning (Tina Fey) is involved here. Maybe even the killer. Various reasons but one reason is the name of the killer in every season has been a sort of clue itself. We had Jan Bellows (who played the bassoon). We had Becky Butler (the butler did it). And we had both Donna and Cliff (Belladonna is a poisonous plant and she tried to poison Ben, and Cliff is fairly obvious given the actual cause of his death). So anyway I think somehow the producer Bev Melon is a hint pointing to Liz Lemon/Tina Fey who plays Cinda Canning. I think somehow the two of them (also SNL alums) arranged to kill Charles to hurt the rival podcast and promote the movie. Kind of killing 2 birds with one murder. Or it is all some promotional stunt and Sazz is not dead anyway.

Yeah I should have added how good the scene with the detective was, she's always great.

For those not old enough to remember Perfect Strangers, this is why those references were so great.

Sounds like I'm in the minority on this show. I felt like season 3 just ran out of gas about halfway through. In fact, I didn't even finish it because I realized I didn't care who the killer turned out to be. Love Martin, and like Short and Gomez in this show but it just sort of fizzled for me.
