Just watched movie. Am a huge Dylan fan having seen him perform four times. Some folks are other worldly and he is one of them. Pure genius.

Throughly enjoyed the movie and the fellow who portrayed Dylan did a masterful job as did Edward Norton who played Pete Seeger.

Well done!

I just saw this movie today with two friends in their 40s (I am 75). The audience was small and closer to my demographic than to that of my friends.

I agree with much of what you said in your review, especially this insightful remark:

Quote:

A Complete Unknown carries two meanings…

1) The famous lyric that of course doubles as the film's title, one that speaks to Dylan showing up out of nowhere, only to go supernova.

2) And then what the film reveals it's really about; how, after Dylan achieves his stardom, he remains a complete unknown to everyone around him, in that the film is primarily concerned with the effect Dylan's genius leaves on others - the wake of broken hearts and disappointments and envy.

Well said. Dylan as a person and artist is like Moby Dick, whose essential characteristic is that he is unknowable. To some degree, Dylan becomes a blank wall onto which those around him project what they want to see.
. . .
That said, if someone were just interested in Dylan, the documentary I mentioned earlier in the thread--No Direction Home (2005) by Sorcese--is magnificent.

To Be On Your Own, and Like a Rolling Stone seem like the most creative titles for the next Dylan flicks.

Saw it tonight. I'm a Dylan fan going back to the early 70's and I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Knew a lot of some of the backstories and enjoyed seeing some of them playing out. Especially Al Kooper walking into the recording studio and jumping on the organ for Like a Rolling Stone.

Headed out this afternoon to see this film. I was a kid just back from the Navy, headed to Jr College when I first heard Bob Dylan. His first albums were a.mystery to me and my friends here in Texas. We were not familiar with the folk scene at all. We literally spent hours drinking and listening to him. I was not in a crowd that did pot but buzzed on beer we talked long into the night about what we thought he was saying/meaning.

I had every album he put out from the beginning to Nashville Skyline Wonder still why Maggie was really in the basement and marvel at the most beautiful song I've known, Girl from the North Country.

I'll maybe check in here again after seeing A Complete Unknown this afternoon.

This just confirms my phone is watching me. After my previous post mentioning Al Kooper, what pops up on my YouTube feed but the story in his own words. Good watch.
