Just watched movie. Am a huge Dylan fan having seen him perform four times. Some folks are other worldly and he is one of them. Pure genius.

Throughly enjoyed the movie and the fellow who portrayed Dylan did a masterful job as did Edward Norton who played Pete Seeger.

Well done!

I just saw this movie today with two friends in their 40s (I am 75). The audience was small and closer to my demographic than to that of my friends.

I agree with much of what you said in your review, especially this insightful remark:

Quote:

A Complete Unknown carries two meanings…

1) The famous lyric that of course doubles as the film's title, one that speaks to Dylan showing up out of nowhere, only to go supernova.

2) And then what the film reveals it's really about; how, after Dylan achieves his stardom, he remains a complete unknown to everyone around him, in that the film is primarily concerned with the effect Dylan's genius leaves on others - the wake of broken hearts and disappointments and envy.

Well said. Dylan as a person and artist is like Moby Dick, whose essential characteristic is that he is unknowable. To some degree, Dylan becomes a blank wall onto which those around him project what they want to see.
. . .
That said, if someone were just interested in Dylan, the documentary I mentioned earlier in the thread--No Direction Home (2005) by Sorcese--is magnificent.

To Be On Your Own, and Like a Rolling Stone seem like the most creative titles for the next Dylan flicks.

Saw it tonight. I'm a Dylan fan going back to the early 70's and I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Knew a lot of some of the backstories and enjoyed seeing some of them playing out. Especially Al Kooper walking into the recording studio and jumping on the organ for Like a Rolling Stone.

Headed out this afternoon to see this film. I was a kid just back from the Navy, headed to Jr College when I first heard Bob Dylan. His first albums were a.mystery to me and my friends here in Texas. We were not familiar with the folk scene at all. We literally spent hours drinking and listening to him. I was not in a crowd that did pot but buzzed on beer we talked long into the night about what we thought he was saying/meaning.

I had every album he put out from the beginning to Nashville Skyline Wonder still why Maggie was really in the basement and marvel at the most beautiful song I've known, Girl from the North Country.

I'll maybe check in here again after seeing A Complete Unknown this afternoon.

This just confirms my phone is watching me. After my previous post mentioning Al Kooper, what pops up on my YouTube feed but the story in his own words. Good watch.

As threatened I'm back after seeing this film last night. If you never heard of Bob Dylan this might not be such a great way to spend your time. As someone who was a fan from about 1965 and someone who was fascinated by his lyrics and music I enjoyed it a lot. The actor who portrayed Dylan had the look and mannerisms down pat. It was easy to become immersed in the story. But frankly and of course it was the music which pushed this over the finish line and into the winners circle.

Regrettably I gave away all my records years ago. If not I'd probably have been up all night playing them. Great trip down memory lane remembering the sunny slopes of long ago. Wife reminded me this morning that YouTube is my friend, I'll be busy the rest of the day!

Awesome, I was there, live, and it was amazing! Night after night we would play his stuff and discuss what the hell that line meant! What is he talking about? So was it the story or the music that you liked?

Have you ever heard the Dylan/Cash collaboration on this song? Individually they're okay, but their combination on the chorus is pretty brutal.

Duck hook, yes. While the collaboration was raw for sure I loved it. This song was one of the most beautifully composed and perfectly executed duets I've ever heard. In fact I was hoping for this duet to be part of the movie but alas…

To anyone reading here that have not hear this song I highly recommend it.

I too was wondering if it was going to be in the movie, since they did give a fair amount of time to their admiration for each other.

I saw it for a second time. My wife originally didn't really want to see it so I went by myself. Then she heard from some of her friends and decided she did want to see it, so I went with her. Experienced it a little differently the second time around. Was much more attuned to the words in the songs and how they were so reflective of the time in which they written. And I'm a Dylan fan anyway, so I had a feeling about that already. But to see it kinda play out in "real" life made it more interesting.

Dylan borrowed heavily from a traditional folk song for his version.

I like the duet. I notice that at the 2 minute mark, they sing different words. Dylan starts to say "Remember me" but Cash sings "Please say hello."

Simon and Garfunkel sang their own version called "Scarborough Fair," which they added to in order to make it their own.

Saw it this afternoon with my older brother, who Dylan "changed his life." Loved every second of this. Didn't know the connection with Johnny Cash, wouldn't have put those two together.
My brother confirmed Dylan going electric was a big controversy, just huge.
Sat through the songs at the end and just enjoyed the music.

That was an Oscar-worthy performance if I've ever seen one. And I'm not a Dylan fan.

Awesome film. James Mangold knows how to make a biopic and especially of that era.

A highlight for me is Newport Festival 64 when he drops "The Times They are a Changing" I almost cried and I'm a very pedestrian Dylan fan. Timmy was awesome and I hope he wins the Oscar, that would be incredible. I felt like I was watching a 2 hour music video, which is not a complaint. I also want to shout out the set design, I felt like I was in the 60's the entire movie, which really helps tell the story and transplant you into the action.

In my youth at A&M I was the most into folk music, and with each year that has gone by I have gotten away from it, but I appreciated the songs of Dylan in this film. It also has fanned the dying flame of my folk music period, going to get that going again and might even dust off the ole acoustic guitar

Weird, similar thing for me. I guess I do have some connection to the song as a Watchmen fan though.

True story...most of the songs I know from Dylan are when people cover him.

Yes, somehow I missed Bob Dylan. I mean, I've known who he was most of my life, but never listened to him.
