Well, I'm gonna have to sleep on that one.

I will say up front that I loved the design in this movie. Alien was mostly a non technical movie, unlike Aliens. But there was a 57 year gap between those movies. And all of a sudden there is all of this military hardware and the atmosphere processors where they are terraforming planets. So it was great to see the hardware in a used state, having done its job on the planet where this movie opens amid a bustling Company settlement.

On the other hand, I totally get why the third act would be considered divisive. Serious Alien Resurrection vibes with that alien/human hybrid. Better done than in Resurrection, though. But seeing how I have long hated Resurrection, I found the third act to be problematic at best, awful at worst. So I really enjoyed the first 2/3 of Romulus, while the last part is meh at best.

I was 5 in 1979 and my parents did not take me to see Alien. However, my mom did buy me this toy at a garage sale. It's head glowed in the dark, so I couldn't sleep unless I buried it deep enough in my toy box so that I couldn't see it from my bed across the room

18" tall and apparently going for hundreds of dollars on ebay. Wish I would have kept that.

Holy Moly

That brings back memories. We are the same age and I was at a cousins once that had this toy. Could not sleep at all that night.

I came across that thing in the toy section of JC Penney's in the fall of 1979 when I had seen the movie twice and was struggling with the nightmares that would haunt me for the next year or so. I remember bringing my mom to look at it, where I made a point of saying I did not want it for Christmas. She obliged on that, but for some reason I have never forgotten that.

So a couple of months ago, I came across one on eBay that was priced north of $900. That spurred me to keep an eye on the auctions. Lo and behold, I found one still in the box and including that clear dome for less than $300. I pulled the trigger. Now that thing is standing on top of a bookcase in my office alongside my Shogun Godzilla and a bunch of figure models I have built over the years.

Here to watch. Loved how the Speak No Evil trailer literally gave away the entire plot.

That exceeded my expectations. Really fun movie, super tense, more jump scares and "of ****s" than probably any other entry in the franchise. Thought the acting, writing, and visuals were all laudable. Not sure what else I'd seen the actors playing Rain or Andy in before, but they pulled off a hell of a performance.

One unintentional laugh came when the gravity clicked back on in the elevator shaft and the elevator slid down smashing all the xenos and then that one peeked its head back out around the corner like "sup". Guessing that wasn't supposed to be funny, but I chuckled.

Good movie, definitely worth a trip to the cinema.

Prometheus's two biggest sins, IMO, were 1) hiring Guy Pearce for a prequel promo video and then slathering him with unconvincing old man makeup for the actual film, and 2) the scene where they finally come face to face with the big white Promethean, and he just… goes berserk and starts killing people.

What a letdown.

But certainly not worthy of having his liver pecked out every day in the grand scheme of things.

writer: So then Andy and Rain have to float in zero gravity through a hallway filled with million of droplets of xeno acid blood.

Producer: That sounds like it will be nearly impossible!

Writer: Actually it's going to be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

So an alien species that impregnates humans and pops a baby out of your stomach within minutes and then grows to full size also within minutes and oh by the way has acid for blood and hunts humans…totally reasonable? But the scene you referenced is over the top?

Honestly this movie was like "actually it's going to be super easy, barely an inconvenience" from start to finish. But I loved it. I don't go watch Alien movies for plausible sci-fi. I watch it because it's ****ed.

Every year I'd make my Christmas list and along with your usual "realistic" things, for years I included the $5,000 life-size Predator from the Sharper Image catalog.

Never got that bad boy.

Gee, I can't imagine why.

I kid.

I'd get the annual Christmas store catalogs (Sears, Montgomery Wards, etc) and circle pretty much every cool, boy-oriented toy in the catalogs. I'd get maybe 2 of those things, and never the things that I really wanted that cost more than my parents deemed worthy.

I'm not even sure where I thought I'd put it. Sitting in the corner of my room? I literally never actually "went" to sleep at night as a kid, I'd simply pass out from exhaustion after my eyes scanned the room countless times for what was lying in wait in the darkness due to far too many Nightmare on Elm Street movies as a child. Can't imagine what a 6 foot tall Predator just chilling in the corner would do for my sleep habits.

Yes, mine had the clear dome too. After realizing what it was from, I always wondered how my mom happened to come across one so soon after the movie was out. I partly just chalked it up to garage sales being a bigger thing in our 'burb back then, and my mom was always a hall of fame shopper. But maybe it was a kid that got it for Christmas or something and was too spooked to keep it. No box, but it was in perfect shape.

Something else I really liked about this, not sure how I overlooked this last night when relaying my initial thoughts:

That opening sequence where a Weyland Yutani scout ship tracked down the remains of the Nostromo and recovered "Big Chap" - what Ridley Scott's crew referred to the original alien while filming that movie.

I had long suspected that the alien did not die after being blasted out of the Narcissus' engine.

I just saw it today and I thought it was really good as a science fiction and alien movie. I wasn't a huge fan of the last creature because it was disturbing to look at and stuff lol but I understand the storyline of why that all happens. I thought it was pretty good and while it is nowhere near as good as the first two, I think it's better than all of the sequels. I liked it quite a bit and while I didn't jump at any of the jump scares, I was tense a few times. Good movie.

In no world is this movie "absolutely terrible."

Not your cup of tea?

Too many callbacks/easter eggs/memberberries?

Wanted something more original?

I'll give you all of those.

But it''s an objectively well-made, well-executed movie with an 81% critic/86% audience score on RT.

Give me a break.

The movie is out so why are those needed?

Anyway, I don't really get that part or how they had face huggers on the ship if that were the case. Makes no sense.

Very entertaining. But made zero sense.

If you want to openly talk spoilers, start a spoiler thread. Otherwise, this is how we've been doing it for years and years. So people who can't see the movie opening weekend can still read opening weekend reactions without fear of the movie being spoiled.

How so, after the movie is out? I have seen pretty much open discussion on movies once they are released. Spoiler threads are only started if discussing spoilers prior to the movie being released.

Many others have stated movie items above.

Look, do what you want, but you're being an ******* to people who are going to stumble in here thinking spoilers will be behind spoiler tags, since that's how we've always done it.

I don't know what you're talking about, re: open discussion on movies once they're released, as I've hardly ever seen that on this board. For TV episodes? Sure. It's common knowledge that in season threads, once an episode airs, spoilers for that episode are fare game. But not for movies.

Also, spoiler threads aren't "only started if discussing spoilers prior to the movie being released." That's just straight up inaccurate. I've probably started more spoiler threads than anyone, and I've started the vast majority of them either the day of the movie's release, or a day or two prior.

So you're wrong on both accounts.

Just start a spoiler thread.

Or use spoiler tags here.

Either option isn't that hard and isn't asking too much.

Just saw it. Thought it was pretty good but not great. Some of the same issues with the quote from another movie. Wife is a huge fan of Aliens and thought it was okay.

Felt it got away from the story aspects a bit later on and was just them running around at that point. I found myself really interested in the dynamic with the company in the beginning. Would really like something a bit more focused on that stuff rather which may be the plot of the new show if I'm not mistaken.

I think that ranking is pretty spot on. Though personally Romulus and Prometheus is a virtual tie for me, at least after one viewing.

I'd give Prometheus the nod for #3. I know why some were disappointed, but I didn't really have any expectations for it. Even though I thought Covenant was fine, I had been hoping for Prometheus 2 instead. Just like with Romulus, I would like to actually see more of the story continued rather than just one-offs in the same universe that reference one another.

Which would you guys want more?

A straight up Alien: Romulus sequel featuring the surviving characters (plus new ones)?

Or for Ridley Scott to complete his David trilogy with a follow-up to Prometheus/Covenant?

Actually, now I'm starting to wonder if the next movie could somehow be both? Considering Covenant takes place only 38 years prior to Romulus, and David doesn't age...
