John Cazale. 5 movies, five best picture nominations or winners. I liked him in Dog Day Afternoon best.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman is the greatest so called character actor who ever lived - imho.

He was pretty much unforgettable in everything he did no matter how small the role. He did lead roles of course as well but in non blockbuster type movies. His one lead actor nomination for Capote he won (deservedly so).

But his smaller suppoting roles in every one of these is just perfect

Charlie Wilsons War
Doubt
Boogie Nights - I have never seen a person look more uncomfortable in his own skin which was the character
The Talented Mr. Ripley
Magnolia
Moneyball
The Master
Ides of March

even very small roles were memorable
Red Dragon - probably 5 minutes of screen time
Almost Famous - same thing
Scent of a Woman
Twister
Hard Eight
Hunger Games movies
MI: III

He was even gold in small doses in comedic roles
The Big Lebowski
Leap of Faith
Along Came Polly

I don't think I could name a single film I disliked him or his role in.

Now a close group of actors that for me are right behind him are:
Sam Rockwell
John C. Reilly
William H. Macy
JK Simmons
Stellan Skarsgard
John Turturro
Paul Giamatti - admittedly more of a lead actor but I think he is amazing

And of course John Cazale had a short but amazing career as noted previously.

Hoffman was also the most terrifying Mission Impossible villain.

Edit: I missed that you mentioned that one.

I agree. Don't think you can call an Academy award winner for best actor a no name.

Chris Cooper is always solid

Also Pirate Radio, which I always thought was an underrated movie.
