They had a connection. We just didn't see it on screen.
Steve had him hide Bucky in Wakanda.
The Panther trusted Steve with the coordinates to be able to fly through the shield into Wakanda.
Like I said, barely a connection.

I love the scene in Raiders where Indiana and Marian are running from the airplane right before it explodes. I'm a kid every time. It's like this huge excitement swell and just hits me and the cinematography and music. And there is still like half a film to go.
