George Miller said when he made it he was making a silent movie with sound. That's why there is little dialogue and over exaggerated expression. He was originally going to film it in Melbourne but due a tiny budget and small film crew they opted for the desert because it was free comparatively. And it was a movie about cars and being a petrol head which is very Australian. So cool car scene was what you were only going to get anyways.

My buddy brought up the ocean when we were watching the movie.

"What's going on with the oceans? Why don't they just go live on the coast?"

I said that the oceans are probably worse than the land. The oceans are completely dead of life and toxic.

Then he says, "What if Waterworld was in the same cinematic universe?"

My only thought and response was , "WHOA!"

Movie was absolutely badass. Hemsworth was amazing… I honestly may have liked it more than Fury Road… and I love Fury Road

I need more movies in this universe…

I thought Hemsworth nose was awesome.

That nose made me completely forget the actor and only see the character. He would have been too handsome for the character without it, haha…

My son loved the movie, his only comment on the negative is he said he wished they made Dementus more menacing rathe than quirky. While I can agree to a small extent, quirky is part of Miler's satire so I think it fits. I mainly loved the fact you weren't seeing Hemsworth (at all)

I was reading this and started thinking about "Furiosa", then was pleasantly surprised when it turned into a brief review

It kind of explains the problems of prequels (and really franchises/series in general)

Just got out, I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a prequel/movie about a side character from a franchise as much as this

Disappointing box office has dampened hopes for more flicks in the franchise.

The revered filmmaker's Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga bowed to a disappointing $32 million domestically for the four-day Memorial Day weekend and $36.5 million overseas, diminishing hopes for Mad Max: The Wasteland, another Max installment Miller has been toying with for years.
. . .
In recent weeks, Miller has acknowledged much was hinging on Furiosa in terms of the possibility of The Wasteland. "I'll definitely wait to see how this [Furiosa] goes, before we even think about it," Miller told journalists May 16, the morning after the dystopian action-adventure played at the Cannes Film Festival to a seven-minute standing ovation. Sources agree that Wasteland's fate is complicated by Furiosa's box office, but stress it wasn't even in development.
. . .
Talk of making Miller's next Mad Max film could resurface if Furiosa gets a major tune up and enjoys a road trip down the box office highway, as Fury Road did thanks to a strong multiplier. But many veteran box office pundits are doubtful whether such a recovery is possible, with one rival studio saying it could have a hard time getting past $90 million domestically.

If they want box office, Miller could make a Mad Max with an aged Mel Gibson. Clearly not what he wants to do which is fine. I liken these to the original Star Wars trilogy and the prequels. Just completely separate stoyr lines/movies. People who loved the first movies in each seem to keep holding out hope that somehow the 1970s and `80s films will be continued in the same style. I love the original Mad Max stories to the point I wrote a paper about "The Road Warrior" in a "Westerns" film class in college. I'm not going to get what I would love to see (Mel back as Max), but I'm not going to crap all over the new ones.

I like to imagine that only Australia has collapsed and devolved into this hellscape while the rest of the world remains as-is.

Saw it over Memorial Day weekend and enjoyed it. I know its box office numbers aren't meeting expectations but do y'all think the Mad Max universe could carry on in a tv/streaming series?

I thought it was okay, a little bloated, could've cut about 30 minutes and still told the same story and not nearly as good as Fury Road, but decent. I have no issues with long movies, but this seemed somewhat repetitive/drawn out at times.

I thought the Hemsworth character would be Immortan Joe but the previews, but it wasn't

It was certainly tamer that Fury in many ways and I thought Immortan Joe wasn't nearly as nasty in this one.

Thing is Mad Max was a cult franchise to begin with.

That was a good movie, but left me wanting a little more of the high octane action. I was especially disappointed the big fight between Dementus and the War Boys happened off screen. We see this war playing out between them, attempts to outflank each other, immortan Joe pretends to hit gas town, and then the deny us the climactic battle? Lame. None of the action or energy matched really any of the segments from Fury Road.

Watching Dementus grow increasingly unstable over the film was fun. Anya Taylor-Joy was fantastic.

Edit: The moment when you realize Furiosa severed her arm to escape on a motorcycle was friggin' awesome.

It's the second best of the Mad Max films.
Thanks and gig'em

That was an awesome experience - saw it over the weekend in IMAX. Can't really compare it to Fury Road because I can't remember **** about FR - it's 10 years old, lol.

This movie was really damn good and the chase/action scenes were awesome.

It could have been a little shorter but still really liked it.

Saw the movie tonight at the theater and really enjoyed it. Lot of fun action. Looked better than I thought it would going in, and ATJ and Hemsworth both did great.

ATJ and that one other driver delivered some of my favorite scenes. Seemed like they had some good chemistry too.

Initial reaction is I like if better than Fury Road, but it's been a long time since I saw Fury Road so I cannot say for sure. I just appreciated the further world and character building of this one. It was really fleshed out.

Absolutely fantastic. Will watch it several times over as I do with FR.

I don't try to compare FR and Furiosa, let them stand on their own merits.

One thing I'm unclear on. When Furiosa lops off her arm and is making her way back to the Citadel they show a man watching her and I assuming this is Max. Is this supposed to be the beginning of the Tom Hardy Mad Max film? If so, the time line seems a little skewed and doesn't really line up.

That was Max along with the Pursuit Special.

I agree that the timeline was a little compressed towards the end of the movie. Actually it seemed off the whole way. Rictus and Furiosa are pretty much the same age in Fury Road, but in this movie Rictus is perving on an underaged Furiosa and are clearly 20-30 years apart in age.

Finally saw this. Really well done. I thought Dementus was done perfectly. And Scrotus has to be an all time character name.

This is now available to stream on MAX for anyone that hasn't seen it. While it's not up there with Fury Road, it's still a lot of fun. I think it helped build the world and was a lot more than just a Furiosa origin story. The Mad Max world IMO lends itself more to things like prequels than sequels. I'd prefer to see how the world becomes what it is rather than the future, to me the foregone conclusion is the world is over and there is no fixing it.

Watching right now on Max. So far, I am enjoying it. Of all of these, I really only remember the first two. I didn't like Thunderdome, and I have only watched Fury Road once.

Edit - not a bad movie. Plenty of action, Hemsworth was great, and it's spurred me to rewatch Fury Road.

I didn't like Thunderdome

I worked for a very disorganized construction company right out of college. Every morning 50+ workers would swarm in, load their trucks and head out in a complete cluster. All the trucks were parked in a huge old warehouse north of downtown in San Antonio.

One particularly chaotic morning, one of the shortest guys twisted his ankle jumping off a trailer & blocked the exit for all the vehicles trying to exit and get to work. A big Mexican dude picked him up and began carrying him out of the way. All of a sudden, the voice of a little quiet Honduran mechanic comes blaring over the intercom. He says in heavily accented English: "Who run Bartertown?"

I freakin' died.

I am a fan of the originals outside of Thunderdome. Didn't much care for Fury Road.

Watched this little gem while on the treadmill then at home on my big TV and really liked it. Thought both main characters and Immortus were all great. I think being able to watch this at home and break it up really helps with how long it is.

Rewatching Fury now and it does really help setup the citadel to let you know what the heck is going on in the beginning of Fury.

I thought the effects and stunts were a ton of fun on the home screen.

Fury road was 100% better with the prequel. It gives the story and characters so much more depth. IMO fury road should not be watched without watching furiosa first.

I don't understand why some people actually root for movies to fail. And yes, it's clear from their posts that they're happy the movies "underperformed" (at least by their standards).

Furiosa was never going to be a Mission Impossible/Jurassic Park/Avengers level money maker. That doesn't mean its a failure or wasn't worth being made.
You want to really know why so many people root for Hollywood to fail? Do I really need to explain this?

I will give you one example.

When Leo, or whoever, stands there at the Oscars and lectures normal, everyday, Americans, about their carbon footprint, it tends to make people cynical, a little grumpy, and sure, ultimately hoping they fail. Not a hard concept to grasp. Now multiply this through the Clooney's Ruffalo's, etc, and it's get really tiresome.

Americans love Hollywood. Always have. Still do. The film industry is pure Americana. Normal people get tired of being lectured by really rich people who play by no rules and hold themselves to no standards.

It's also why folks like Hanks or even Spielberg remain so loved. They typically don't do that sh**. Or Cruise for that matter. Glen Powell seems to be rising in the same vain and if that continues the country will love him.

Don't dine on caviar and ride in a limo then tell me I'm the problem.

I finally saw it on Max over the course of several days (bobbing around in the pool at night with a margarita). I need to watch it all the way through, maybe on a flight this week.

Very good film. I love this universe too.

Furiosa bombed at the box office because of girl power/girl boss fatigue. The young(er) male audience shunned it. Too bad because it really is a good film. I don't think it's there with Fury Road but its good.

To me this was Hemsworth's "Jo Jo". The film that proves he really has the chops the way that Jo Jo Rabbit did for ScarJo. IMO which isn't worth much

I enjoyed the flick.

If this is the last entry in that universe it's a shame.
