Really enjoyed it. Can't wait for part 2 next year. Tom Cruise has the golden touch.

Gotta admit, even as a huge movie score aficionado, I didn't realize this theme was from the original show, nor did I realize it had been used in the movies before Fallout.

For me I strongly associate this with Fallout and now Dead Reckoning.

So I had dinner with a friend tonight, who's in a position to know, is relatively close to the production, etc, and here's what he told me the big stunt is for M:I8, that everyone involved keeps saying is the biggest stunt of the franchise, but won't give specifics...

We've seen the Cruise Cinema-Con footage from the biplane a while back (below), and what apparently happens, in the broadest terms, is that Ethan is flying a biplane for some reason, that biplane's engine goes out (maybe it's shot or something), and so what Ethan has to do is JUMP from his biplane to a second biplane, overpower the pilot, and take control of the second plane. And this is all going to be done practically, in the air, in camera. I'm sure Cruise will obviously have a harness of some sort that will be digitally erased, but the jump itself will be real, and they've apparently been practicing it for over a year now, and were about to film it, right after the M:I7 press tour, but then the SAG strike happened and now they have to wait for the strike to end.

So, yeah, I have no idea what the context is plot-wise, but this is apparently the stunt to end all stunts...

Just saw it and honestly at times had trouble posting attention because she captivates me so. Maybe my all time celeb crush.

amazing movie

so many nods to other great action adventure movies. McQuarrie has a lot of respect.

the traversing the kitchen railcar scene was one of my favorites in the series. very clever and smart and new.

Pom was great as Paris

Agreed you can see they were checking off wish list items for the last installment. Train roof fight. The vertical climb. Crazy long car chase in Rome. The upcoming biplane sequence.

Haven't read the whole thread but the explosions that demolished the train tracks were to the tune of the theme, right?

Grace is Ethan's daughter, perhaps? She's an orphan, there was a very vague conversation about a woman named Maria, assuming that's the girl killed by Gabriel. Not exactly sure how Ethan wouldn't know about her birth yet? But when Ethan said her life would be more important than his, the camera sure did linger a long time on the two of them.

And I think Ilsa is going to be alive. We saw her stabbed, didn't see her die, but saw a body that sure looked like her. Some crazy sleight of hand at play? Still not sure why Gabriel would want to trick Ethan on this yet…

saw it last night...definitely enjoyed it, but not as much as rogue nation or fallout.

this may have already been discussed, but why didn't they change grace's eye color when she was playing the white widow? i know the plan was for ethan to wear a mask of her brother, but once that fell through, how in the world did zola not realize that wasn't his sister on the train? he noticed that she changed clothes, but not that her eye color has changed?

also, i hated the decision to kill off ilsa. her character was a big part of what i loved about rogue nation and fallout. that said, as much as i love her character, i'd hate her death being faked even more

Ilsa did not get enough screen time or a "big send off" typical of when big characters get killed in movies. I'm convinced she'll play a huge part in Part 2 the more I think about it.

it was a deliberate choice since they made Kirby put in brown contacts

I guess you could use Shawshank how often do you look at a man's shoes logic - it's a risk and a stretch but not necessary a plot hole

a bigger convenient stretch to me was Luther having a poochie I must go my people need me moment before the final act since the pure hacker is useless on the team and for the action vs something that dominates all signal intelligence

also when Ethan is riding his bike up the cliff ledge to jump off the mountain is uneven and bumpy except for a single rut line. that was funny.

movie was incredible though. not as good as Fallout but Henry Cavill vs little Tom Cruise in the helicopters made that movie for me.

Man I had to dig to find this thread.

I'm a huge fan of the franchise but due to a new little one my theater time has been very limited this summer, bought this on digital as soon as it dropped Monday night and got to stay up late to watch on Tuesday.

Overall it was a blast, though like others I'm ranking it behind Fallout and Rogue Nation and probably right there with Ghost Protocol.

Random notes:

- Hayley Atwell was great
- I really like Shea Wiggin and he and his sidekick's moral journey made for an interesting subplot
- The airport sequence with how they and then The Entity were altering things in real time, along with the bomb threat, was great
- They amped up the humor a bit in this one and made Ethan a bit more fallible, and it worked for the most part
- The train sequence...wow
- This was the best execution of AI as a global threat I've seen in modern film (for the opposite go watch Heart of Stone, which also happens to be shot like a British tv show)
- Fun car chase and loved their safe car parked right next to the Ferrari

My one nitpick, and it was surprising for this franchise, was at the party when Grace pulls the switcheroo with the key and sticks it in thug #2's pocket. They really obviously framed multiple looks from Ethan and Grace at the pocket to reinforce that it was in there, something that seemed really out of place for as quickly as these films tend to move and how intelligently they treat the audience.

Overall a lot of fun and a worthy addition to the franchise, can't wait for Part Two (which I will definitely go see in the theater).

With the strike, there was no way this wasn't getting delayed, but I was expecting it to move from summer 2024 to late 2024, not all the way to summer 2025...

Don't they have the movie to film, including the biggest set piece?

They filmed just under half the movie prior to the strike.

Sounds like it'll be losing its "Dead Reckoning Part 2" subtitle as well, and will instead be given a new subtitle. I assume to further separate it from the box office disappointment of the first one.

There's some debate. Most people assume she's gone for good, but she was also a fan favorite, we never saw her buried/what they did with the body, and the characters hardly took any time to reflect on her death, so there's an assumption it was all a big fake out by the filmmakers.

I don't personally mind, but some here might.

I mean, we're just wondering aloud whether she's coming back or not, something we were doing in the immediate wake of Dead Reckoning as well. And to me this clip isn't nearly as definitive as this Feldberg person thinks it is. In fact, I meant to post the just tweet he was referencing and not him.

I hope she's back! It'll blow my wife's mind!
I got my wife hooked on all these movies and Rebecca was her favorite character. She was not happy with me during that last movie.

Just now got to this movie. Had fun! Worth the wait.

That Ferguson clip doesn't sound at all like acrobatics to me. She did 3 pictures, the character was less important and more "part of the team," Atwell got 5x the screen time that she did, etc. Why bring her back? Especially since Cruise and Atwell had such chemistry.

Bummer of a turn of events, but yeah - if the only way to bring her back is to jump the shark, then just leave her dead.

Just got around to seeing this. I had lost track of the franchise after rogue nation, I don't remember the last one I actually saw in theaters. Randomly decided to revisit the franchise this weekend.

I really liked this. Everyone here is talking about the train sequence, but my favorite was right as they left the party up until Ethan gets to the bridge. Excellent score, hardly any dialogue. I knew ilsa would bite it, but I was still on the edge of my seat.

I would start a war for Haley Atwell

I've seen all the movies and have been a fan of the last few in particular and I thought this one was bad. Just fell flat to me.

1. The face acting. There were way too many times people shot each other looks. Every bad guy had to do an evil eye brow raise, every jab had to have a coy little head tilt. It was just corny.

2. The editing/directing. In general if you notice the editing then it's bad. Needless jumping around. Like it would be on Rebecca Ferguson, then cut to Rhames, then back to Ferguson, and the camera would have been dropped and rotated so she is being framed differently. For no reason whatsoever! It was just jarring in places. There were even times they broke the 180 degree rule for no reason other than just bad directing.

3. Too much! I understand these movies are big tentpole type things that go big but there's a line. Perfect example is the train. Ok, cool, you're hanging by a train car and you have to go up. Nice! Oh wait a second one? Ok. A third and fourth? Needless and the thrill is gone.

4. The plot was at parts overly complicated, with the entity doing 15 moves that could have been 5, and then at parts obvious and the characters would be like "what a minutes?!?! The entity is behind this!" Yeh, no sheet!!!

I don't know, maybe I wasn't in the right mood for it but it was probably one of my least favorite of the series. I'll still watch part 2 though.

And how did that get nominated for best visual effects? As TCTTS but it, there was some "suspect CGI".

Two edits for that grammatical masterpiece? Maybe one more edit is in order.

Finally saw it and really liked it overall. The cinematography was amazing, Atwell brought fresh life to it all, Esaimwas really good, I liked the additional plot lines, the action sequences were great.
Things I wasn't a fan of:
Cruise is starting to look too old for the part.
No one among the good guys carries a gun anymore?
The first few scenes were chopped down to the point of "huh"? They give a completely broad generic location for where Ilsa is, and magically he finds her, no problem. We have no idea how. There were a few of those early.
Then my biggest disappointment, was that the plot is basically around a computerized Lane Solomon. He was always able to know what would happen, force events, everything leads to where he wants etc. Wish it had been a bit further from five and 6.

But like I said, overall really good. In the end, the things I liked are why you watch movies like that, the things I didn't are more quibbles.

just watched this for a second time last night

1. how many noticed that "White Widow" had blue eyes when she was mean real villain, and then brown eyes when Grace was playing her?

2. the amazing motorcycle jump seen that we all watched being created was actually used for TWO different scenes in the movie. the first being the plunge off the cliff, then 20 minutes later the REAL landing by Cruise when he was using the "wing" jumping out of the train.

3. both Grace and Ethan wore gorgeous tailored suits which were impeccably clean- even AFTER GRACE WAS LAYING IN A COAL BED ON A TRAIN. same with Ethan when he is in a huge fight for 15 minutes, then a car wreck, and his collars are still starched.

4. how does Gabriel communicate with the Entity to know what to do and what to say?

5. does it mean the French assassin gal who "she has a pulse" will become part of the team in the sequel?
