Let's just hope it's not their CGI teams because there has been some pretty mediocre stuff in marvel, or maybe it should be them….

7,000 out of 220,000 employees = a blood bath? The old 3.1% bloodbath.

The equivalent of firing 3 people out of a company of 100 and calling it a bloodbath.

overall, sure.

but these are primarily hitting the higher-paying white-collar corporate and production divisions, not the 155,000 more blue collar parks/resorts type jobs.

Well that sounds fantastic. That's the people they should be laying off.

I think it sucks that people are losing their jobs.

The economy has played a big role, but Disney studios needs to do better. Their animated movies don't all have to be classics, but they've dropped turd after turd lately, including Strange World losing about $200 million.

Walt Disney Animation Studios raked in more than $317 million in expenses for the film Strange World and has only recouped $120 million. A mere $35M was brought in from its time in movie theaters worldwide, a figure that is significantly less than what was spent just on advertising the film.

According to deadline, biggest losers of 2022;
1. Strange World
2. Amsterdam - $108 million (New Regency/Disney)
3. Lightyear - $106 million
4. Devotion - Sony
5. Babylon - Paramount

I've mentioned it before, but Disney needs to figure out how it's Disney+ problem, and for it's kids movies, it needs to focus on storytelling and not messaging.

Very little if any of that is done in house.

$5.5b/7000 is close to $800k per person

I read somewhere that the cuts are expected to be 15 percent of Disney's entertainment division. Probably where the bloodbath language comes from.

I don't think that $5.5Bn number is strictly salaries. It probably is tied to capital projects within those divisions, as well.

I'm sure we'll hear more and more about initiatives/projects being canceled as part of these job cuts.

Yeah definitely not just salaries, or salaries+future benefits and all that, or just not filling "open" positions, probably a lot of capex involved.

Super Mario Bros killing it while Disney lays people off is something to behold. Families want to take their kids to fun, wholesome movies and enjoy a cinematic adventure together. Deliver that and profit, deliver what Disney has prioritized instead and lose.

Super Mario Brothers is a 90-minute commercial for a video game series.

And Top Gun Mav is a 131 minute commercial for the Navy. The only thing that matters is the movie gets tickets sold and butts in seats. If Mario Bros was weak, word of mouth would have reflected that and it wouldn't still be making a ton of money.

You will never get through to those in the woke cult. Even entertaining a different worldview makes you lesser, in their eyes. Doesn't matter how easy it is to see the results.

I think Disney's problem with their current setup is that every movie becomes a massive risk when your break even is north of a billion dollars in ticket sales on it. A couple of bad choices and you are teetering on serious corporate wide impacts. It also takes away the artistic side, because almost by definition you have to create movies that appeal to everyone. You can't be segmented anymore. Then you have to worry about the woke complaints, the "Rose" issue etc. it's a lot less headache for a studio to go back to smaller risk productions.

I didn't say it was weak. We went to see it opening weekend and I'm taking my daughter again on Saturday. I just think it's silly to champion Mario Bros as some great paragon of wholesome adventure. It's based on a video game that has been popular for 40 years.

How does it being from a video game universe and being old conflict with it being a wholesome adventure? That makes zero sense. It was a near-perfectly executed family animated blockbuster. Another studio, Disney for example, could have easily botched it by trying too hard to impress the wrong people. That's what they're willing to do now.

Yeah so woke they had a revenue of 82.7 billion in 2022, an increase of over 15 billion from the previous year, with almost 8 billion in profit.

Look we aren't going to convince each other. I thought Mario was great and I think 95% of what Disney does is great too.

I don't need to convince you. It's numbers. It doesn't matter what your opinion of a "commercial" is if it is making bank and Disney is laying off a lot of people after making movies you and a few other people thought were great.

You are one person/one family. Apparently the majority of people watching their recent movies don't agree. They can't make money appealing to one family out of a hundred in a theater

I mean, my whole family went to see Dr. Strange 2 and Black Panther 2 and those both made over $400 million domestic. Do those not count?

It's a built in IP that's been around for 40 years, overseen by a company that famously has extensive quality control over its well-established, family friendly IPs. Making an actual Mario movie with Nintendo's heavy involvement was always going to be a slam dunk.
