It's hard for me to find time to sit through an entire show with multiple seasons, but I just watched Blackbird on AppleTV+ and loved it.

That said, what other mini-series do you guys recommend?

A pretty good comedy is Shrink on Peacock. It was a SeeSo show when that was a network for about 3 months. Tim Baltz (from The Righteous Gemstones) is the lead. Only 8 episodes

How is a mini series defined? Is there a max number of episodes? Band of brothers is 10 and that doesn't feel mini to me. I'm not trying to be obtuse I've just never thought about it.

Not much difference between that and a show that doesn't have a consistent/consecutive plot between seasons.

So I'll add true detective season 1. The Night of was decent.

  • Chernobyl-cannot recommend enough, Boris' character arc is possibly the best in TV considering he was only in 3 episodes.
  • S1 True Detective- fantastic writing and acting all around with an edge of your seat suspense and mystery.
  • Band of Brothers- if you haven't seen it yet this is the gold standard for mini-series

They've now changed these to be called "limited series". Really just means something in an episodic format that isn't written to go beyond 1 "season". Doesn't really matter how many episodes.

Good Omens (although they are making a second season due to the reception of the first)

If you liked Band of Brothers (recommended throughout the thread), similar choices include The Pacific and Generation Kill. Another similar choice is the foreign language "Generation War" which looks at the German perspective in WW2.

Watchmen on HBO is also good, although probably divisive on TexAgs for obvious reasons.

A couple of other 80s series that I have not seen mentioned:

The Winds of War
War and Remembrance - both based on books by Herman Wouk, both with good depictions of the coming of and actual Second World War, but also both with a lot of hokey romance and family plots and stuff like that. Not even in the same ball park as The Pacific or Band of Brothers.

V was fantastic up until they severely cut the budget for the TV show. They made major cut backs in sets, kept showing the same generic scenes for the aircrafts, and cut out major characters like Michael Ironsides.

Mini series = very good

Television series = got bad fast
