agreed.

no way her cardiovascular system is efficient enough to do that.

It's been all over foe months that they hired specialists to help them. Sigourney weaver hit 6.5 minutes and Zoe Saldana hit 5 minutes. Why the disbelief?

Maybe it was 1 minute sessions 7 different times <shrug>

That's much easier to do when you are on top of the door while the rest of the cast is swimming.

Because Navy Seals who train regularly go 2-3 minutes and the most fit Seals max out at 6 minutes.

So what? Are navy seals the end all be all of holding your breath? Some dude in Spain held his breath for 24 minutes and he isn't a navy seal.

Nobody really batted an eye when Tom Cruise did it.

Don't understand why this is harder to believe.

Yes, he does it for a living and holds the world record and used pure oxygen to supplement. Kate Winslet did not hold her breath for 7 minutes. She is not a world class athlete who trains specifically for free diving.

If you know how much people train to do free dives and hold their breath that long, you would realize Tom Cruise didn't do it either.

It sounds like you haven't read about the training they did, actually. And the fact that they were breathing with enhanced oxygen in order to do it.

They also weren't moving.

I didn't realize how much I needed RWWilson to shine a harsh spotlight on the Hollywood Holding your Breath scandal until now.

Pretty sure this would be easily proven one way or another because they filmed it...

That said, I don't think most appreciate how far some actors will go for roles. Shia Labeouf supposedly cut his own face and had a tooth pulled for Fury. Leonardo DiCaprio pretty much did all of the things in The Revenant for real. Tom Cruise fired a safety/stunt guy who wouldn't let him do a stunt In Ghost Protocol. Natalie Portman trained 6 days a week for months trying to do all of the dancing herself in Black Swan.

I wouldn't be shocked if Kate Winslet did the training and really did do it

ETA For a lot of actors, doing these kinds of things is their job. They can and will train like elite athletes for roles if that's what it takes to nail the role and sell it. SEALs train like SEALs, which means they train in lots of areas. If Kate Winslet's job is to train to hold her breath for 7 minutes for underwater filming, then she's going to be training for that professionally, like any elite athlete and devoting a lot more time to it than SEALs.

David Blaine did it for 17 minutes. Color me unimpressed.

ETA: In this talk he does say that he met with a top neurosurgeon that told him that anything over six minutes puts you at a serious risk of hypoxic brain damage. So put me in the camp of I don't believe her.

Gonna go research and read up on "enhanced oxygen". Sounds very scientific and exciting.

I just think it's funny. It's the most random thing to me that Kate Winslet can hold her breath for 7 minutes. I'll take y'all's word for it especially if there's video of it. My first reaction was no way. I would give more weight to UAPs being extraterrestrial in origin than I would Kate Winslet holding her breath for 7 minutes.

I don't know if it's healthy to have a baby while you're holding your breath for 7 minutes underwater on a movie set, but to each their own.

When I took scuba diving for PE, we had to swim the length of the pool underwater and then don the scuba gear. I barely made that, and that was the shorter 25m indoor pool.

Lol... you people are funny.

Learning to hold your breath for that long is not magic. There are techniques they use and practice. They do also prepare with more oxygen rich air. It's not like she woke up one day and held her breath for 7 minutes. Now, do I think it's exactly 7 minutes flat? Probably rounded a bit, but that is not out of the realm of possibility. However, it's a silly thing for an actor to outright lie about. An even sillier thing to create a thread about.

Also, the remark about SEALs is stupid. SEALs do not spend time learning to hold their breath for extended lengths of time. They are put through rigorous training where they are forced into situations where they have to hold their breath. They are no more better at it than any normal physically fit person, unless a specific SEAL were to make it a point to train to do so.

Did we... did we just *agree* on something?

This thread is truly remarkable, in more ways than one.

So what I'm hearing is that Kate Winslet is probably better in combat than a Navy SEAL.
