I was a Nintendo boy. I was intrigued by Ecco the Dolphin and Sonic, but only got to play it in short bursts at friends' houses.

In like 5th Grade, I won a local Street Fighter 2 tournament that Hollywood Video hosted. I mean, just destroying all these teenagers. The winners would go on to the Championships at Sea World to play a series of other games to determine the Champion.

We get to Sea World and get setup and the first round is freaking Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis. It was a "Get the most points in a certain amount of time" challenge. I'm here, unfamiliar with the controls, rings just flying everywhere, completely lost. I was humbled and quickly got knocked out in the 1st round.

I'm an old, so my progression was:

Pong
Atari 2600
Commodore 64
Roommate at A&M had a SNES -- we wore the hell out of Madden, NHL Hockey and Super Mario World
Roommate in law school had Sega Genesis -- pretty much all golf and baseball marathons
Took my nephew's PS1 when he upgraded
Got my own PS2, then PS3
Got an emulator that plays most classic Nintendo and Sega games
Kids have Nintendo Switch

We had both Sega and Nintendo. I really loved College Football's National Championship II on Sega. I ran the table multiple seasons with Army.

I currently have a Meta Quest 2, Switch, PS5 and XBox S. I play the switch the most and they have a subscription for a lot of the games from previous consoles. They also have the wireless retro controllers. Plus Super Mario World 3D is like a new version of 64.

My progression:

Multiple PCs (Timex Sinclair, Apple IIe, Apple IIGS, then various IBM clones)
PlayStation
PS2
Wii
3DS
Switch
PS4
Oculus 2

Right now I mostly play the PS4 and Switch. Kids are almost entirely Switch, with some Oculus. I'll probably try to get a PS5 when the HP game comes out.

Perhaps, but they seem to have righted the ship to be their own thing, existing outside of the console wars. I think the Switch is an amazing console, helped heavily by BotW being in my top 3 games of all time.

No doubt they've carved out a still very profitable niche and that there's still demand for their products. Their in-house development is still second to none.

But it wasn't by choice that they fell out of the console arms race. It's discussed in the book, but it really is super interesting story about their rise and (somewhat) fall - all centered around control.

Playstation essentially was born because Nintendo embarrassed Sony at the altar.
I would hardly call Nintendo a "niche" product. The Switch will likely end up being the #3 console of all time (behind the PS2 and their own DS). Despite some missteps with both the GameCube and WiiU, I think they are still the top video game company out there. Sony is the only one who is close, but they really only make consoles. Nintendo makes both consoles and games. They are also much more creative than Sony (and MS). Each PlayStation is essentially just a hardware upgrade over the previous generation. There's really not much different about each generation. Nintendo on the other hand tries to do something different with each new console. Sometimes it fails (see WiiU), and other times it succeeds massively (Switch, Wii, DS).
Sony and Microsoft both make games as well as consoles, and both have a larger market share than Nintendo. Nintendo certainly has some strong brands in their original games and tends to do very high quality editions with each generation, but they're still well behind the other two in a lot of ways, and their business model trends toward stubbornness when it comes to adapting to modern standards, something which particularly harms their ability to work with third party developers.

The Switch has obviously been a success, and I would expect to see them continue to lean into the portability aspect moving forward.

Microsoft solidly in third place in both console and software sales.
Not sure where they're getting their numbers, but Microsoft has been steadily climbing with their acquisitions. Reports I've seen for this year are similar, but obviously incomplete.

Your link includes mobile gaming (ie, IOS and Android games). The graphic above is Console sales. So, I guess it depends on your definition...

Intellivison ~> Nintendo -> Nintendo 64 -> Sega Dreamcast …..

Then it was all PlayStation the rest of the way

Kids have the switch and as a family we'll get on there and do Mario Kart and Party……both of those can get intense especially if the rib and I have had some wine prior

NES - Sega Genesis (probably one of my favorite "Santa" gifts of all time) - N64 - Gameboy - GBC - PS - PS2 -Wii- Xbox 360 - Xbox1 - Xbox1X - Switch

Have tons of fond memories playing all of these consoles over the years. Still enjoy wrecking people on MW games, FIFA, and very much looking forward to the return of NCAA Football

I had both a Super Nintendo and Genesis growing up. A perk of divorced parents I suppose.

Loved them both. The SNES had more staying power probably. There are still some games I play occasionally.

Sega was the console to have for a couple of years in the mid 90's for older kids / young adults at least. Bill Walsh College Football was huge, NHL '93-'95 (94 was best) and the Mortal Kombat were very attractive.

Started off with an Intellivision. I think we bought it at a garage sell for a couple of dollars. Amazingly enough, Toys R Us sold Intellivison games so my dad bought me a football game where the players were stick figures and it was so awesome.

Then in 1st or 2nd grade for Christmas I received the NES which was the best Christmas ever. It was the one that came with Duck Hunt and the Power Pad. I remember the first game I bought was Ice Hockey. Still have the NES to this day.

I started mowing lawns and saved up enough around 13ish or so I bought a 19inch tv and the SNES. The graphics and depth of games going from the NES to SNES was astounding. Super Mario World was amazing. Also, FF3 was my first dip into the JRPG genre which is still my favorite FF game.

Then a year or two later for my birthday my parents got me the Sega Genesis. I loved the Genesis because to me it was so much different than the SNES. The Genesis seemed to have faster and crazier games where the SNES had more "serious" games. Both complimented each other perfectly. Joe Montana 2 Sports Talk Football for the Genesis was my favorite football game and Ken Griffey Jr Baseball was my favorite baseball game for the SNES. Toe Jam and Earl was another amazing game. I need to find an emulator for that game.

Around early high school I bought the N64. Goldeneye and NWO vs WCW were the games my friends and I played the most. If we wanted a short night where everyone left pissed at each other then we would allow someone to be Oddjob. Another friend let me borrow the PS1 or PS2, I don't remember which. But that is what introduced me to FF7 which was another milestone in my gaming journey. There was also some snowboarding game we played a lot. We had a demo to "Parrappa the Rappa" that everyone but me hated....lol.

After that I went to college and didn't game as much on consoles because I was introduced to A&M's ethernet which opened up a whole new gaming world that dial-up internet didn't offer. For consoles we still played a lot of Mario Tennis for N64. Later in college I got an XBOX and the roomates and I did the standard season in NCAA football which was awesome. I still remember losing in the championship game to one of my roomates when my 5 star fullback fumbled it when the game was tied and all I needed to do was kick a field goal to win to Texas Tech. Played a lot of Tony Hawk 3 as well.

Nowadays the older kid has a Switch and the younger is fixing to get one as well. The older one wants an Xbox which I'll get just to play the new NCAA when it comes out.

Yep never got into N64. That time period is more adolescence than childhood and I was too busy playing Joe Montana Sportstalk and Madden football to care much about N64. Became a Sony fanboy shortly thereafter. I do have a Switch now for my kids and 3DS for plane flights.

Man, most of that is my experience exactly haha (sans the N64 and goldeneye awesomeness that I completely missed out on). Wonder how many other kids growing up in our era have those exact same memories.

Loved playing the stick figure football game on Intellivision with my dad. We had the stick figure baseball game too. I remember after scoring a touchdown the player could keep running off the field/screen. My dad would always make a joke about where he was going: "uh oh, he needed a potty break" or "and he's leaving the stadium for ice cream" and I would think my dad was so hilarious. Couldnt wait for him to score to find out where he would say the guy was going.

Big fan of the Spot game. There was a game called Greendog the Beached Surfer Dude that slapped as well.

I was a SEGA guy. Loved Madden, Sonic, Home Alone, Jurassic Park, and Mortal Kombat. Quickly upgraded to PlayStation and never looked back on consoles due to graphics.

My exposure to Nintendo was only the game boy, game boy color, etc. had most of those as well as a PSP for handhelds.

For consoles:
SEGA, PlayStation, PS2, XBOX, XBOX 360, PS4. Stopped video games really after that.

Did anyone here ever play with the Nintendo Virtual Boy? This trip down memory lane made me remember the set up for this unholy contraption at the local Blockbuster that I spent forever playing while waiting for one copy of a movie to get returned.

I remember playing a Virtual Boy at Toys R Us as a kid. At the time, I was a sucker for anything video game related. I thought every system and game was awesome and wanted my parents to buy them all for me. And even I was like "Damn, this thing sucks!"

Huge gamer growing up.

Never really got much into XBOX, but played them all.

I remember a couple of things about blockbuster when I was younger.

1) they would rent out consoles for a week with a large deposit. I remember renting Sony PSX without even knowing what it was, and think the first games were ESPN Games, NBA Jam... trying hard to remember the other 2. Ridge Racer and Toshinden.

2) prior to n64 release they would put out a console in a plastic box with mario64 that you could play. I'd ask my parents to drop me off for an hour and would play while they shopped around the corner.

I liked the Dreamcast bc it was easy to hack w/o Modchip and I had so many bootleg games.

3DO - return fire?! Dragons Lair
Jaguar - I can't even remember a game

Makes me think of the guys playing poker all night in the Commons. They were all gone spring semester

With regard to WoW, one of my good friends had a suitemate who played all the time and was absolutely disgusting, enough to drive his roommate out. You couldn't open the door to the shared bathroom without getting a whiff, but he somehow managed to not fail out to my knowledge.
