I'm still trying to determine if I'm upset or not they made a Fletch movie without Chevy Chase. Was he just not available or not interested?

He might be a little old for the role at this point.

He's also been quasi-cancelled. He apparently said some racists stuff a while back, if only jokingly, but the Community cast can't stand him either. They all say he was a nightmare to work with, there are all kinds of stories from set, he finally gotten written off the show, and basically hasn't worked since. So there's no way he was ever going to be in this version, and I'm honestly glad they didn't try to connect it to the old movies in any way, as this iteration is definitely its own thing, seems to have a slightly more elevated tone, etc.

Big fan of Hamm and know he is comedic, but I'm having a hard time seeing him as the idiot that was Fletch.

Fletch wasn't an idiot per se imho. Clumsy for sure. Somewhat lazy and definitely cavalier. But he was pretty intuitive he was just a wild card and flew by the seat of his pants. He was a dogged reporter and took a lot of risks and did not follow rules. Occasionally he ended up in trouble but he was good at talking his way out of a jam.

It will be interesting to see if they asked Hamm to attempt the physical comedy that was so effortless for Chase.

Yeah, I'm dumbfounded that you haven't seen it. Not a criticism even, just shocked,
It's such a quoted and even copied comedy, I would have thought it's almost a must watch for a screen writer.

The second one is even decent, though not as good as the first. The first one is a comedy classic.

Not a lot of physical comedy, if any. I think he slips once, and then mainly just has slightly goofy facial expressions here and there.

Yeah, I think he's always been "difficult." Community was seemingly the last straw.

I look at physical comedy as much more than stunts and slips. Exaggerated facial or body movement. Not depending on writing and timing alone.

It's hilarious to me that this thread someone now has 42 replies, yet I'm the only one who's seen this latest version. I had no idea my Fletch 1.0 blindspot was going to cause so much hubbub.

Currently #6 on Apple movies. Pretty impressive, considering the competition and the fact that it's been out for less than a week...

It's also in select theaters too, btw. I rented it at home, but kind of wish I would have gone to the theater instead.

When I first saw this scene in the theater, I could not stop laughing ... the set up, timing' line delivery, facial reaction... perfect.

Still is awesome comedy.

Both Fletch movies were awesome. The books are great too they had a lot of material never understood why they did not make more. Not big budget stuff easy to make - except working with Chevy perhaps.

I'll watch this. But yeah they could have easily made him fletch's son. Fletch Too. Which was ironically the title of one of the Fletch books.

This article from a while back goes through the failed Fletch revamps over the years.

https://www.vulture.com/2011/08/the-lost-roles-of-the-unproduced-fletch-reboot.html

Personally, I was hyped when Kevin Smith had the rights and was going to put Jason Lee as new Fletch. After seeing the preview a few weeks ago I really liked the idea of Hamm. I'll definitely check this out at some point.

Chevy always said Fletch was his favorite role cuz he could just be himself.

He sure has some iconic characters from my youth.

Likewise to others Fletch, Ty Webb and Clark Griswold were infinitely quotable for me.

And as much as the Community cast hates him the show would not have been the same without his completely unhinged and un PC bigotted character Pierce Hawthorne. It needed a bad guy.

I know he's a giant ass to work with but I find him hysterical and appreciate his willingness to do anything.

He also was the originator of Weekend Update on SNL the most enduring part of SNL and he set the standard for it.

Odd note he played in a band (drums) in college with 2 guys named Donald F agen and Walter Becker who went on to form the classic rock band Steely Dan. Chevy is said to have perfect pitch.

I flagged his post as "Thread Derailing," seeing as there's no "Spoiler" option. I would suggest others do the same, since staff will likely clean it up before he does.

Again, the spoiler itself isn't quite that simple, but it's still such a d*ck move. If anything, I can't believe how casually he dropped it.

It's either a dick move or the guys an absolute moron. Either way he should be banned.

It made me sad when I learned he's difficult to get along with considering my affection for all the characters you listed above. I can't remember where I heard it but evidently he had a pretty rough childhood. Specifically his mother never really loved him and supposedly he's always just been trying to get her approval. It might have been a Joel McHale or Dan Harmon interview, whoever it was basically said once they learned more about where he came from the behavior didn't bother them as much because they just felt sorry for him. They didn't give him a pass for it, but they did pity him. They didn't understand why he couldn't grasp onto the people in his life that actually did care, but he'd been damaged emotionally by the treatment from his mother.

I do like that of all the countless people he disliked, he always loved Norm MacDonald and said he was the only other person to do Weekend Update justice.

The phrase sports games just tickles me to death for some reason.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
We have an artist friend who hates sports for some reason, and knows next to nothing about them, so whenever the rest of us get together to watch a game, no matter the sport, we joke with him that we're watching "sportsball." "Sports games" definitely has that same vibe.

Hamm is at least a legit fan. He's not only been in Bill Simmons' fantasy football league for years (and won the whole thing last season), he's a massive St. Louis (where he's from) sports fan across the board. Powell, unfortunately, went to Texas and is a Horns fan, which is now two strikes against him, and likely explains the phrasing.

Hamm went there too for a while unfortunately.
