In this day and age where ideologies aren't about how we can work together with differing views to fix an issue we all agree on, but are instead truly differing opinions on what America is and what freedom is... you're damn right I think most opinions different from my own are stupid.

"Humans are causing climate change and the world will be destroyed in 12 years, therefore we all need to give up our lives to the government and their regulations because they know what's best." Is the platform we are being sold.

If Dems came out and said exactly what you said, I would be more than willing to talk and discuss.

When arguments are made with hyperbole and fallacies, they are "stupid".

Carry on.

In 100% agreement that the left is truly terrible at messaging... "global warming," "defund the police," etc, I could go on and on. I also agree that we have no hope in stopping whatever's coming. Instead, we should be putting money and resources toward living with it/preparing for it, in whatever ways we can, as opposed to trying to reverse it by spending/regulating our way out of it.

As to whether it's man-made... I don't know. On one hand, there's absolutely no way the pollution we've been putting into the air isn't affecting the environment in some really bad ways. That said, yes, as noted above, this can also be cyclical/natural as well.

Ultimately, I just wish the left would acknowledge that we can't spend/regulate our way out of it, and I wish the right would quit acting like nothing's happening (man-made or not). Instead, if the two sides could come together and work toward some kind of socioeconomic/infrastructural preparation plan - or, at least, contingency plan - we'd be in much better shape when/if sh*t finally does hit the fan at some point this century.
Holy Carp! TCTTS posted something that wasn't stupid!

I'm not even going to comment on the rest of these topics because this gave me hope in humanity, again.

Good ol' TexAgs. Where "what I don't agree with" = "stupid."
Didn't you call some people idiots above?

Before this thread, on this entire site, I don't think I've ever once commented on climate change.

Outside of that, my most "controversial" sociopolitical takes on this board are basically...

- Hollywood isn't comprised of nearly as many liberal elite social justice warriors as some of you might think.
- Can we not ascribe anti-white, anti-America intent from filmmakers based solely on a trailer/preconceived bias, before we've seen the final product itself?
- Can we maybe, you know, show a bit of empathy for some of the people/types a handful of posters come here to mock?

If you find any of those things "stupid," I don't know what to tell you. Unless it just really chafes you that I'm not a huge fan of horror movies or whatever.

That was… fine. Definitely not good, but not nearly as bad as some are making it out to be. Basically, anyone saying this is complete trash is overreacting, and those calling it a modern-day Dr. Strangelove are idiots.

You seem easily impressed but I can see where you're coming from. As I said, glad the comet trashed earth. I could have done without seeing Streeps ass…yikes.

It was.
And apparently Leo thought even that was inappropriate because of Streep's royalty status. He tried to get McKay to not do it.
That whole last scene was one of the few I actually enjoyed.

I think I read somewhere that everyone was calling Streep "GOAT" during filming, and she had no idea what they meant by calling her that...

To people of Meryl's generation (and even my generation), goat had a different meaning, it meant you were the reason for the loss. I don't know how big of a sports fan Streep is, but if she knew that meaning and was still cool with it, that adds another layer to the joke,

I enjoyed it for what it was.

I didn't know the meteor was supposed to be a metaphor about climate change, so that missed its mark.
Really? I got that from the short trailers.
I didn't watch the trailers before watching the movie.

Apparently you all missed Chris Evans's comment about it being a "popcorn movie." This was nothing special but was entertaining and had some decently funny moments. It's a somewhat better than normal Netflix movie.

My family enjoyed it; college daughter loved it (no surprise).

Funniest parts for me was when Jonah Hill's character was excited about timing the Molly to hit right when the rockets took off and the transition in the bar after Lawrence's character said it was just about making rich people richer and then the riot broke out.

Some of the poking fun at the current state of American politics was too on point to be funny; just another reminder at how **** everything has become.

No joke! While watching it kinda dawned on me how mind-blowing it is that she has been so good and looked so good for so long. She still packs the same punch she did twenty years ago.

Just watched it, thought it was decent.

Uncomfortably realistic: the comments during the concert, people making memes of a serious situation, the boyfriend turning heel to make a buck off selling a book, people caring more about a celebrity's breakup than actual news...

Realized the movie was a metaphor, but that didn't diminish my movie-going experience. You can substitute in literally anything, left or right, and the premise would remain.

The meteor or comet or asteroid or whatever is meant to represent the inevitability of climate change; something thought to be catastrophic and planet-altering, that most of the world doesn't give a sh*t about. This has been mentioned an infinite number of times across approximately 13 million interviews given by McKay, the cast, etc.

I still haven't seen the movie for myself, as it sounds A) horrible, and B) like McKay failed spectacularly at getting his "message" across.

Meteors enter the Earth's atmosphere.
Comets are icy objects that have tails. Tails are the evaporation of the icy objects. They tell you which way they are traversing relative to the sun.
Asteroids are rocky objects that orbit the sun.
This has been your science lesson.

Complete Idiot
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I watched it alone, on my office computer, so I always feel that makes for a lower bar than paying a wad of cash to see it at an Alamo Drafthouse or something - but having said that, I found it enjoyable. Had plenty of funny moments but was satirizing reality that can be so over the top itself that some of the satire seemed....too over the top. It's a tricky thing to make fun of some of our realities at this point, like "I can't push this any further than where reality already is".

It actually had some good drama elements early when the comet is found and you could really sense the main characters fear and desire to communicate it, but being terrified of having to tell it to a US President or to the general public on a talk show. Well acted.

But overall a pretty bouncy farce.

It was decent. Had funny moments, and was a little too on the nose at times.

The "Don't look up" slogan is too accurate. The concert at the end of the world that changes nothing was also accurate.

I don't know why this movie got so much criticism. I thought it was awesome to see a catastrophe movie make fun of the media and politics. Sadly to me I don't think it's far off base from reality now either. It was one of the most entertaining things I've seen in a while

Pretty much sums up my thoughts. I enjoyed it. It was wort the watch, but probably won't ever watch it again.

Didn't really read much about it before watching, but was surprised by all the super negative reviews i saw after the fact. I thought at worst it was a pretty average movie. Assuming all the negative reviews are these type of people

Watched this last night and found it better than I had expected based on the trailer. Found it pretty funny. I think the best thing is all the small 1 liners most people might miss if not really paying attention (and I'm sure some of those flew over my head as well).

I found it made more fun at politics and life in general than anything specific about global warming/climate change/etc.
