I heard it's going to heavily revolve around BLM movement. I really hope that's not true.

Last season's Madeline Wuntch episode was probably the funniest I've seen. (Not going to give away any spoilers)

They scrapped the first few scripts of the season because of BLM - likely changing plot lines that perhaps glorified cops in ways that could be perceived as tone deaf - but by no means is the season going to "heavily revolve" around BLM. This is a network sitcom, not an HBO Sunday night drama.

They did try a couple of more serious episodes, dealing with Terry being profiled for being black and such, but didn't pull it off as well as Scrubs used to.

i feel like B99 has done a fantastic job about being PC without beating you over the head in a cringe fashion.

hopefully that's the case here.

Yeah they'll touch on the subject for sure - they won't be able to ignore it, and it might be more serious in tone at times - but the season won't revolve around it by any means.

I'll always credit the office and B99 for introducing a gay character that it's impossible not to like.

nobody is annoyed with Oscar or Holt, because they're just well written funny characters and their sexuality didn't define the character. sometimes their sexuality made the premise funnier, but it had so little to do with it, that you weren't being beat over the head.

In my opinion, Brooklyn 99 got much too serious over the last 2 seasons. I understand that shows like to touch on issues from time to time but unless silly comedy shows do it well, I just don't think it lands at all.

Have you ever watched "Happy Endings"? I always felt that they did a really good job of making Max a dude that also happens to be gay. Also, really flipped the gay stereotype on its head.

First two episodes aired tonight. Honestly, I thought the first was pretty bleak, as it included all of the unpleasant real life issues of the last year, and frankly wasn't all that funny. Was pretty much what many of us were worried about after seeing the quotes from cast/writers.

Thankfully, they rebounded in Ep 2 with the lakehouse.

Happy to have the 99 back.

There was no way they could do another season of the show without at least touching on those subjects. Its just a reality you have to accept.

I really disliked the first episode. I didn't like the subject matter, frankly, and I didn't care for the changes with the characters (Hitchcock retired??? NOOOOOOO! And Rosa as a P.I.? Nope, don't care for that).

I was ready to bail on the episode before it ended and was seriously considering just being done with the show. And just when I was thinking the show had gotten too heavy and was no longer fun, I watched the second episode. That's when the show got funny...

Now THIS is what I loved about the show. Rosa went completely 180 degrees from a character I was uninterested in and became the funniest part of the episode.

Stoned Rosa is an instant classic and hope she returns. My God, every scene she was in was pure gold.

Oof that first episode was rough. I get they needed to say something but it was just too much too fast. In previous episodes when they tried to tackle a serious topic they gave it room to breathe and they usually still had comedic moments. This felt hamfisted and trying to tackle all the topics of 2020 and felt more preachy than informative. They made fun of Boyle for overcompensating but I felt like the episode was doing exactly what Boyle did

Also not a fan of all the squad changes. Hitchcock retiring, Diaz quitting, Holt and Kevin separated. Again too much too fast. The season just started!

It was a pretty dark episode with not a lot of comedy or reprieve. Hopefully they got that out of the way and sounds like episode 2 has more of a B99 feel

Sometimes I like to watch shows that exist in their own universe rather than mirror what's going on in the world. It brings a certain realism that makes the show more serious in a way.

I bounced out of the first episode pretty quickly. I've had enough of that stuff in reality, I don't need a sitcom's take on it.

Second episode was good. Look forward to the rest of the season.

I agree with everyone on the first episode being hamfisted.

Luckily my sister had already watched both, so she told me to keep going. The second episode was hilarious.

The show has always been really good about addressing real life issues while not being overly preachy about it. I hope that can continue.

Not much to add to the general consensus that the first episode was terrible. Only the second truly bad episode of the show's run.I'm curious if they knew how bad it was and that's why we got two episodes so quickly.

Bumping this thread to say I thought this week's pair of episodes were top notch.

Terry: "Maybe I don't have an arch nemesis because I solve all my crimes.". followed by painfully long silence.
Amy's 16 minute explanation for why she is fine with her baby not having pulled himself up yet at 10 months.
Maple syrup lice treatment
"Two birds one stone." "We are not handing our baby to a serial killer!"
Captain Holt's digital phallus photograph
"Dear Kevin, please find this enclosed picture of my p&nis. Sincerely, Raymond Holt"

The last 5 minutes of that last episode was so freaking cringe.

So Jake, who is married to a fellow cop with a new born in NYC, is suspended for 5 months and his response is "I deserve it so I'm chalking it up as a win"? Stick to comedy writing or get the **** out of here. The amount of pandering they jammed into that scene...good grief that was awful.

Just watched the Doug Judy episode... this season is pretty terrible.

The Judy episode wasn't near as bad as the last one. I made it until Dr. Cox, Esquire, came in and started playing creepy cop.

What a drop in comedy this season...

The only thing I truly don't like about this season is the police union bit.

Edit for we're watching the newest episode tonight, so we'll see.

Ok, I thought the Doug Judy episode was great. I really enjoy their ridiculous relationship, and you can't beat the Bandit's Trans Am plus "tigers & toucs".

There's no getting around the reality that the Dr. Cox union character is a drag. Holt's speech at the end was a good one, and I think the audience is completely behind his sentiment. Then they turn around and want us to all be ok with a five month suspension?!? That's just insanity. He made a mistake. A reasonable one. Trying to catch someone he thought had probably planted a bomb on a bus.

If he really is suspended for 5 months, are they going to jump forward in time for the last half of the season, or will we endure a season where Jake, Diaz, and Scully are all off the force? No thanks.

I left this series sometime through season 7; seems like it peaked before its last season. Is season 8 worth it? Like scrubs I can pretend season 9 does not exist!

Watched the last 2 episodes. The Boyle farm episode was my favorite so far, even if that's not saying much.

The whole series became meh when they started trying to dive into "serious" territory.

Agreed with the whole "meh" feeling of this season. There were some good episodes and scenes, but not to the standard of previous seasons. The police union thing is forced, but it's not that different from the PD villains of previous seasons.

Overall, I think with the long break and BLM events of the last year, it seems like no one involved really wanted to do the show anymore. They crammed in this last short season as fan service, but it feels like everyone is just giving 50% effort. Everyone is ready to move on to the next project.
