Anyone here have experience with Gretsch?

I have been playing my dad's Gretsch G2655T Streamliner with Broad'trons https://a.co/d/5CYa8o6

I am considering switching to the G5422TG https://a.co/d/hRRwLzL which has Filter'trons. I've found the Broad'trons on the Streamliner to be a little muddy. According to my research, the Filters should provide more clarity on the low end.

The other option I'm considering is to upgrade a different Streamliner (as it's not mine) with Filters or even going with TV Jones Classics. My dad's Streamliner plays nice to me, but I don't know if I'm missing anything with the higher price of the G5422TG. If the playability is about the same, it might be more cost effective to just upgrade the pickups. However, I do LOVE the look of the hollow-body G5422TG (Walnut or white), and that provides value to me as well.

For context, I'm playing contemporary worship. Think Shane and Shane, Phil Wickham, Vertical Worship, etc. The tone I'm after allows the guitar to ring out very clearly, even with overdrive.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Links updated to Amazon. Thanks yall!

I used to have a Gretsch a long time ago (went thru a short-lived "rockabilly Stray Cats/Brian Setzer phase", lol). Loved that hollow-body sound, but the Bigsby trem was very unstable. Will someday get a Gibson ES335 instead.

I think the Bigsby setup on the G5422TG would have better tuning stability because it doesn't have the bar. I have a Bigsby on my ES-330, and I used to have a lot of tuning issues when I first bought it. Found a video saying to try string it over the break angle bar, and my tuning issues went away. That break angle bar causes a lot of issues.

Installing new pickups on a hollowbody is a pain in the ass. If you end up replacing the pickups, I recommend also getting a nice electronic harness from Emerson. They are pricey, but of the highest quality and do make a difference for your guitar. The taper on the pots is so smooth, and I get such great clarity when turning the volume knob down.

However, you should buy the G5422TG if you love the look of it. I'm a big believer in buying it if you love it, unless you just don't have any money and need to be responsible. I'd offer this guy $600-$650, all in: https://reverb.com/item/62356492-gretsch-g5422tg-electromatic-classic-hollowbody-double-cut-gold-bigsby-electric-guitar-white

He wants to charge shipping, but if Amazon is selling it brand new for $900 with free shipping, you should be able to get it used for less than $700 with shipping included. It looks like it's a shop, so maybe try calling them directly and offer to buy it outside of Reverb, and they may make that deal.

Very valuable insight, thank you so much!! I hadn't considered the rollers on the bridge helping the bigsby stay in tune, so that definitely helps.

Hey,

I'm not a guitarist but my 11-yr old son is. He's getting pretty good and simply has a little starter Ibanez. He's been saving up and wants to buy another guitar, leveling up. He's young so he is targeting something from Stranger Things? I have no idea what or why, but it's pricey and I'd rather advise him to get something for a better value prop.

Any recs? Preferably something we can get at a local Guitar Center. His favorite jams are Metallica, GnR, AC/DC, etc. Loves older sounds and goes down those rabbit holes on his own. Has a few pedals to play around with the sound also.

Thanks!

That BC Rich looks cool to a young metal head but is not a practical practice instrument! Can you play that thing sitting down?

GC has lots of stuff. Sweetwater has all that and more and maybe better prices and quality checks but only has the one giant brick and mortar location in Fort Wayne. And they have a great return policy.

Reverb will be suggested here as well. Lots of options new and used there.

Besides pointy metal head guitars, is there anything else he likes?

Amp is just as important as the guitar. Some would argue moreso. Obviously, if budget is the main hurdle, then a new guitar is sexier than a new amp. As he grows up, he will realize how important it was for him to get a good amp.

It's hard when talking about teenagers and their wants. At the end of the day, you want to get something he is excited to play.

I am a HUGE fan of buying used guitars. Just think... you buy a used 'whatever', and you are already paying 30-50% less than a new guitar. And, in fact, guitars are one of the few items that actually get better with age (pickups will slowly degauss and wood will continue to age/dry). Would a used guitar possibly have a few dings or scratches? Sure. But you can literally get 2x the axe for the same price for a few minor cosmetic blemishes.

Example:
You mentioned AC/DC as a band, so let's look at Gibson SG Standards. This is a guitar that can last him the rest of his life.

You could buy new for $1,999: https://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/gibson-sg-standard-electric-guitar/l54573000002000

Or you could buy used for $1,150. Hell, you could even potentially get it for less if you negotiate. I never pay listed price on Reverb: https://reverb.com/item/80473325-gibson-sg-standard-ebony-2021

ETA: Just realized that Reverb listing was from Chicago Music Exchange. I bet you could call them and negotiate $1,000 for buying directly from them, so they don't have to pay the Reverb percentage. That's 50% of the price for a new Gibson SG Standard...

You mentioned bands that are all pretty much known for humbucker guitars, so it's easy to recommend a Les Paul or an SG. Les Pauls are going to cost more because they are more expensive to make. SG's have their own thing and are great guitars as well. Let's say he was interested in going with a humbucker guitars, and his budget is $1,000. I would whole heartedly say you should spend $1,000 on a used Gibson SG over a new Epiphone SG for $500. Not only is the Gibson the higher quality guitar, but you would never lose the value of your investment. The guitar will only appreciate in value with inflation.

Just my thoughts. I'm a vintage lover, so I will always lean towards the vintage instruments over the metal guitars like Jackson or BC Rich.

What about my $100 acoustic guitar

Decided I needed a travel guitar. Lots of trips planned this year. Looked at everything from a gs mini to foldable guitars. Decided on this.
Pros:
Built like a tank. Carbon fiber composite would be indestructible for most uses
50 W Bluetooth speaker sounds great and is worth at least 1/2 the price even if you didn't play the guitar.
Drum machine, metronome, tuner, looper built in.
Really sounds surprisingly good.
Can play music through the speaker at the same time you play.
Provided effects/looper pedal and microphone for singing along.
Cons:
With the size and weight distribution it's hard to find a comfortable position. So I either play it like a classical guitar or on the provided strap
Most of the provided modes have too much effects built in. I don't need reverb and delay built into my acoustic settings. But the settings are all easily programmable.
The neck seems too slick.

That's wild….Is the neck carbon fiber too?! Where'd you find it?

I played one of these the other day and was floored at the feel & sound too:

Amazon. Yes, the entire guitar is Carbon fiber. Not carbon fiber weave, but composite. Less expensive but just as strong and stable.

Haha no doubt. I do have a 1954 Martin D28 that I inherited. It's more of a collectors piece and needs a neck reset pretty bad. Playable for some cowboy chords. Nothing sounds like a Martin.

Everything g about it is just perfect. Had always heard how playable they are. The size, neck shape, scale length. It's like an acoustic for electric players. I can't put it down.

Tell her she can get a new vacuum cleaner or food processor if you get a new guitar.

Stand back several feet when you say that.

Is that a Custom Shop or American Vintage/Original? Would be interested in seeing the specs on that one. That sunburst looks like a wide burst, so I would assume Custom Shop.

Either way, now we're talking my kind of guitar! No such thing as "overboard" on a quality Telecaster.

It's an American Original 60's. This thread really inspired me to stretch my budget so I scoured the web to find something nice, located an instrument and negotiated the price down some. I was getting a little fluttery after just this morning three US teles were listed locally for $800 asking. Looks like two already sold. Either way I don't have any remorse and look forward to making terrible noise for the foreseeable future.
