I will say that my only experience meeting EJ was at A&M when he played Hurricane Harry's on the Venus Isle tour. One of my good friends was in Roger Creager's band (who played there all the time back then), and he got us into the venue in the afternoon during their load-in. Anyway, we were milling about, asking if we could help, etc. and the guys said sure and we loaded in some equipment, shot the bull, etc. Eventually EJ came strolling in, and he asked me if Sweet Eugene's was within walking distance. I said "Nope, but I'll give you a ride over there if you want."
Much to my surprise he took me up on the offer, and grabbed his keyboard player (Steve I think) to come along. We piled in my truck and ran over there, where he bought us teas or coffees or whatever. Couldn't have been nicer, asked about A&M, bonfire, etc. Had a couple of great stories he told us, and just was super cordial. I was just trying not to wreck my truck with a guitar god inside (lol).
He autographed my Venus Isle and Ah Via Musicom CDs (still have them) too.
Sweet story!
I didn't know the batteries story was well-known. My buddy didn't SAY he saw it happen, but I assumed it, and thus thought I was bringing truly obscure intel to the thread! Oh well!
