Perhaps, but it's also the ****-eating grin of his. Who knows... sometimes you just immediately dislike someone. He is one of the few guitar-tubers I can't stand to watch.

He does grin a lot. But I don't care. I just like seeing new gear.

Thought I'd share my quest for tone with my fellow guitar Ags.

So now that i've been playing my new LP with my Tone King, I was getting right there for my Page tones. However, I was still slightly off.

My LP is about as close to Page's guitar as I'm going to get, though i believe his is a '59 with a sanded down neck, which is basically a '60.bMy Tone King Imperial is still the best amp I've ever played through, and I am able to get close to the Bassman/JTM45 tone on the lead channel.

The last piece is a Dallas Rangemaster. For those who do not know what a Rangemaster is, and are big classic rock fans, you need to go read up on them. Just about everyone in the 70's, from Iommi to Page, used these specific treble boosters for their tone because they couldn't roll enough bass out of a Plexi and wanted to tighten up their sound while also boosting the signal.

I've experimented with a few over the last couple of years and have been using my Black Country Customs TI Boost on my board for a while now, which has performed just fine. However, this pedal was meant to really mimic Tony Iommi's specific modded Rangemaster that was accidentally thrown away, and not a generic Rangemaster. There were very nuanced characteristics of the EQ and gain that still weren't really for me.

After watching several videos and reading up on the various forums I frequent, I came across the Catalinbread Naga Viper. Every guitar forum had guys swearing by them, so I bought a used one off Reverb and it was delivered today. I added it to my board and started A/B'ing it against my TI Boost and the boost side of my D&M drive. I am completely floored at how much better this treble booster is. It is by far the most transparent of the three, and it does not make my guitar sound fizzy nor does it make the overdrive sound simulated through the amp. It also far exceeded the others' ability to clean up the signal as I rolled the volume knob on my guitar. My tone stays so clear and articulate while just cleaning up.

For anyone looking through treble boosters out there, this is one I highly recommend looking into. For those who play through tube amps and don't use treble boosters... I suggest looking into them. If I could only have one pedal on my board, it would be this one.

Speaking of peddle boards...I'm about ready to build mine. Any videos or articles you'd recommend for doing it properly?

That Pedal Show is in my top 3 guitar tube channels. They have several videos specifically around building a board and what they have to have on a board.

Their Pedal shootouts are always fantastic.

The only drawback to their videos is they can be extremely long because they go deep.

What I've learned through watching them is to don't cheap out on power. Buy a nice Voodoo lab or other nice power supply to provide dedicated power to EACH pedal. Jumping from pedal to pedal on power can cause noise or power issues.

Make sure you go to one of their videos on signal chain. To have the optimum pedal board, you really need to consider signal chain and which pedals HAVE to be at the beginning and which ones HAVE to be at the end. Depending on the size of your board, it may be beneficial to get a signal chain selector switch so you can cut the signal path down but leave the pedals on. Remember, the longer your signal chain, the more of the signal you lose. Some channel selectors have built in buffers, but some pedals don't work well with buffers.

My personal setup is based on my Patch Kommander channel selector. I use the channels for:

Tuner: Dedicated tuner input that cuts the signal completely and only sends it through the tuner. Love this to just cut my signal completely and tune my guitar.

Channel 1: Treble Boosters. A treble boost should usually ALWAYS be your number 1 pedal in the signal chain. I could chain 1-3 on this channel and individually engage whichever one i'm going to use. To be honest, that's really too many, so I only ever have 1 Treble booster hooked up.

Channel 2: Colorful Overdrive Pedals. This is where I personally put my Klon clone, the Tumnus. I would also put any other overdrive pedal that is not very transparent, but adds a certain flavor or color to the tone.

Channel 3: Transparent Overdrives and boosts. I have my D&M Drive here and keep the OD and Boost sides pushing just a little bit. I use this to boost that last bit of signal to get the exact saturation I'm looking for.

Channel 4: Reverb/Modulation/EQ. Always put your Reverb and Modulation pedals at the end of your signal chain. If you have a dedicated effects loop in your amp, you can detach this signal chain from your amp's input signal and send it to the effects loop, which is usually in between your pre-amp and power amp circuits. Some people, even professionals, send those effects into the front of the amp and some send it through the effects loop. Both options definitely sound and feel completely different. Sending it through your effects loop would now require 3 cables running from your board to the amp.

The very last pedal on my board is my Ditto Looper. I always want my looper to pick up everything in my signal, so it exists outside the Patch Kommander network, and is the last thing my signal goes through before going to the amp. Ever since I first bought this looper about 9 years ago, I have never taken it out of my signal chain.

From there, it's just about what you need to do what you are wanting to do. I am generally a minimalist when it comes to guitar. I generally keep my amp on edge of breakup or at a good clear/articulate overdrive, then use my treble booster to push the pre-amp and get me those tones I'm looking for. The other OD pedals I use for particular guitars to get that additional saturation sound like what I hear in my head. I don't generally stack overdrives too much. If you are going to stack overdrives, make sure you aren't pushing each one too hard. Layering overdrives is a very solid tactic, but so many people jack them up too high and fart out their amp.

Not a new guitar but I saw a Recording King guitar that a father and son brought into Guitar Center while I was there to pick up a set of strings today.

The father said it was his grandfather's guitar and he believed it to be from the 1930's. It was a little worn but overall looked ok considering they walked in with not in any kind of case. It was a big guitar!

They inquired about a string change and a general "cleaning" of the guitar. They said there was dirt in the nut and maybe tuners and maybe the f-holes/body.

The sales kid went to ask the manager. They don't really have an official guitar tech right now from what I understand. At least not one that can do something with a 80-90 year old instrument.

They ended up leaving with the guitar. I guess GC didn't want to mess with something that might be brittle or too delicate.

ETA: their guitar looked similar to this one

Thought I'd share my current board. I've swapped out a couple of pedals for others since the last time I shared.

I only have 1 pedal on each channel except for Channel 4, which has the Reverb and analog delay on the chain. I feed that directly into the front of the amp because I don't want to have to move them around between my two amps.

My number of pedals is really limited because of my power supply. I haven't felt like getting a bigger one and rewiring everything.

Re: Loopers I need to buy a second so that I can have one at the end of my chain and one in my fx loop.

I like having one in the loop because I can have it loop a clean rhythm. Since the loop comes after the drive I can engage the drive and noodle over the clean loop with a driven lead tone.

This green CE24 I sold last spring that almost immediately showed up at a different shop from where I sold it has now shown back up at Guitar Center in Clear Lake. They changed the pickups to something with gold covers, but I was able to see the serial numbers enough to know it's my old one. Told my wife it was trying to come home and she seemed unamused.

Dallas,

Do you have pictures of your music room/area? I have recently been turning my extra bedroom into a music room and want to start recording again. I have a nice rise and fall work desk that I can put studio monitors and run the software I need. Just wondering how people have their set-ups arranged for the best sound.

I don't have a music room. I'm single, so my entire loft-style living room of my condo is my music space. Layout of a music space starts with your amp/cab combination. Are you playing through a head and cab? Is the cab closed back or open? Are you playing through a combo? That will determine a lot on setup.

Every single room is different, and any conventional rules may not apply to any space. Go watch Dave Grohl's documentary on Sound City where they talk about how great the drum sound is when recorded in that studio. They couldn't tell you why drums sounded so good because the room was not designed for recording, but they just did. It was the room with the Neve board they used. Everyone also has a different idea of what their optimum tone is. I may prefer a more treble to high-mid sound to my tone whereas you may prefer a more rounded full tone. Your entire setup would be based around getting that specific tone.

I play primarily through my Imperial MKII combo amp. With combos, they are meant to be set directly on the ground, otherwise they can sound too bright. I also angle the speaker away from me so that the sound cone is perpendicular to the direction i'm facing. Also, I have hardwood floors which combos don't play well with, so I have to make sure my amp projects its sound over my rug in my living room. If you have thick carpets, this will heavily affect the sound of an amp.

The ceilings in my living room also get upwards of 20 ft, which definitely has an acoustic affect on my sound. That just is what it is, so I have to compensate with less reverb and adjustments on the amp to compensate. No amp will sound the same in different environments.

Yeah. The closest I've ever would ever come to that was at an open mic and the guy was acquaintance who didn't have his guitar for some reason. End up freaking me out because the guy played and strummed with his fingers and apparently busted a cuticle while he was playing. I got up to play later and noticed blood spatter everywhere and thought I was injured. That acoustic still has blood inside the body.
