Well I have to sell the acoustic to fund the other. I haven't decided on anything yet.

That's a really nice guitar but I just sold an acoustic and have two others. My next guitar will be a solid body electric.

That's a good price for that Martin. Good luck with sale.
Did you sell that Takamine? I was interested and am local but was out of town and forgot all about it.

The Takamine was sold to a TexAgger and has a home where it can get more attention and not compete with other guitars!

We have another acoustic that we might sell if I can get my wife to agree but it's technically hers so I'll post it if she is on board with the idea.

Would appreciate some advice folks--

My 1966 ES-335 TD lives in the case for the most part and maybe 20 years ago I noticed some checking in the finish. I wasn't overly concerned, but it has grown over the years, but mainly contained to the back. The front seems to be picking up some as well now.

I have been reading up recently and this is likely due to dryness in the air where the wood contracts, but the Nitrocellulose finish does not, causing cracking or checking in the finish. So now, I am looking at perhaps the D'Addario Humiditrak to sense the humidity levels and the Humidipak to address humidity issues.

Here are my questions:

1) Does anybody have similar issues with their vintage guitars? If so, have you done anything to address the issue itself?

2) Should existing checking be addressed, or better to leave it alone instead of trying to do anything that might adversely affect the value? Does it possibly add value since it is a simple way of validating the age of the guitar?

3) Are there any good Luthiers in the Dallas area that can provide guidance on the issue or perhaps do repairs?

Funny that some of the various forums are focused on how to recreate checking. I'm more concerned about any issues with pieces of the finish coming off or disfiguring in a negative way...

thanks for the ideas

Checking is definitely popular. I would think it would be somewhat difficult to prevent without keeping it completely climate controlled.

I don't have the TexAgs Ten Commandments and Moses pic on my phone or I would post it.

On TexAgs, there is a Rule #1. On this thread, there is a similar rule about sharing a picture of your lady, when discussing her.

Nice 335!

At the end of the day, there is no way to fix that without devaluing the guitar. The Gibson Murphy lab charges a lot of money to do this to new guitars. On a vintage guitar, patina like finish cracking does not increase the price of the guitar, however, it also does not devalue the guitar too much. A clean guitar without the cracking will be more valuable than yours with the cracking, but not by a huge amount.

Really, you should be storing these guitars in a climate controlled room. Don't just rely on the climate packs you can throw in the case. Those work fine for modern guitars, but vintage instruments with the thin nitro coats need much better care.

Thanks, that is sound advice. I think that is deep down what my gut is telling me, but sometimes we need confirmation from experienced voices.

Don't think I can take on creating a climate controlled room, but will look into it. Maybe as first steps of slowing down the checking but managing the case climate for now will buy me a bit of time for later when I can.

Not cheap by any stretch, but a fraction of the value of that guitar Acoustic Remedy Display Case

This would be fine investment to protect and show off that Gibson!

By climate controlled, I just mean a humidifier gauge and humidifier. Don't let those guitars get too dry, humid, cold, or hot. That shouldn't cost too much. Put it in any room, but keep that room somewhat controlled.

Thanks, and fascinating idea, Garrelli--looking into this. Will have to find a good spot for a couple of these. Don't know if the Strat needs this much attention or not (will send photos sometime when I get back to the house)

Okay, so... I have been in the market for an R0 for a while. I've played a few and was looking forward to visiting some places in Dallas while here for the holidays. I started over at the Guitar Center off of LBJ. They had a lot of Gibson and Fender custom shop guitars, including one R0. It played and sounded great, but that price tag of $6,000 was fairly substantial.

Next, I went over to Tone Shop Guitars, just down the road. They had just had a guy sell them his 2015 GC exclusive R0 last week. They had it listed at $4,500 and it played and sounded fantastic. I asked if they could drop that price down to $4,000, which they agreed to.

DallasTeleAg will now be headed back home with this beauty. Unfortunately, the sun was going down, so the picture isn't as well lit as I would like it to be.

google photos took it's time today--here ya go!

BTW, I have photos of the manual and stuff that came with it new if you want to see them. Also have my Fender Twin Reverb likely from 60's or 70's too.

Bought this Jan 12th, 1983 New. For some reason River City Music in SATX talked me into changing out to Mini-Schaller Tuners. Don't recall the originals being a problem. This is one of the lighter Strat's I've played:

Been lurking on this thread for a while but haven't bought any guitars to justify a NGD post. I did buy a cheap Boss Katana MKII amp at GC yesterday, but nobody wants to see a pic of that - so I'll post a pic of what I've been playing through it. 1980s Japanese Rosewood Tele given to me years ago by my dad. He acquired it from an old friend who bought it new from Charley's in Dallas. The story is that Charley bought this at the 1985 NAMM show the year he died on the floor of the convention and it took a while to get ownership sorted out and back to the store. My dad installed the fancy tooled hardware, but I have the original in a box.

Those prices are trippy. That tele is beaut though.

I've seen that kind of hardware before. It works really well on natural finish teles in my opinion.
